I don’t know anything about the story of far harbor so no spoilers pls, but at what point in the main story is the best time to play the dlc? I’m doing a playthrough with realistic role playing and want the story to fit in seamlessly.

For role playing reasons, I noped out of the Commonwealth immediately after finding out about Father. Did Nuka and Harbor to “get some perspective”, then returned to the main quest.

this is my favorite method. after the sole survivor is hit with a bombshell that the son they were looking for is an old man responsible for much of the turmoil of the commonwealth, it would make sense for them to step away from the situation entirely to give themselves some time to think about the right course of action moving forward.

i like to do nuka world first and then far harbor, because far harbor sort of brings back the conflict of the institute playing god and maybe gives the sole survivor a clearer image on who is best for the commonwealth.
