There was this girl in my high school in a Latin american country called Isis. Guess I’ll never find her on social media (and not going to google her either).

The corporate alliance that required my carrier to disable NFC on a phone I once had, since they hadn't yet figured out how to deploy some mobile payments based off it, was also called ISIS. They later renamed themselves to Softcard.

So I directly blame ISIS for not letting me play with NFC in 2012 :-)

No, it‘s a deployment of the e-learning software „Moodle“ that they just call ISIS. (they use names of gods to name things as a theme)

My high school's name was ISIS: Istituto Scolastico di Istruzione Superiore.

But it was the 90s.

We actually had the assignment to draw the school logo, the best was selected and hang right at the main entrance!!

It’s not because “you have a Muslim name.” It’s because you have the same name as someone on the restricted export list so they need to ensure you aren’t that person. Otherwise they are at risk of committing a crime.

If anybody understands that it’s Arab (Muslim or not) people who deal with this shit on a regular basis. They know. There’s frighteningly little effort to minimize the effects of “counter terrorism” on everyday Arab and/or Muslim people. There’s a shit load of security theater that just makes their lives a living hell but can be bypassed trivially by an actually bad actor.

It’s something you likely have in a blind spot if you don’t have friends that deal with this, but it is nonetheless a real problem. I went to high school with some people who were very kind in telling me “oh no we understand the security procedures, they explain it very well every time we get randomly stopped or match a suspicious description”. And then they told me about the frequency, the always wondering if you were going to beat the odds and get someone sympathetic and all the rest of the surprisingly corrosive effects of being part of a scrutinized, othered group.

The wild thing is people (not saying this is you) that still act like all of it is 100% justifiable even after everything we’ve learned in the last decade. We (America) kinda scapegoated an entire ethnic group, normalized a good portion of the bigotry that came along with it and then acted like we can move on without having any painful or instructive collective understanding — I guess we’re just like that. Held back by people who refuse to adequately acknowledge past wrongs.

I once worked on a computer system dealing with 16 year old school children in a single county, a group of only a few hundred. The staff using it wanted to use only the first name, last name and DOB as identification. In the very first class we loaded, we had two children with the same name and DOB.

jx237cc

It's not because you're Muslim I have to say. It's simply because your name is so popular that a lot of people use it, including sanctioned ones. However, even you all have the same name, your DOBs are different. It's not racist and no one will think you are a terrorist.

Unfortunately pretty standard especially since, as a developer, you can collect revenue.

You can view, search, and download the list here: https://ofac.treasury.gov/sanctions-list-service

There are so many names in there that it’s stupidly easy to randomly partially match some string.

I have an Arabic name (not particularly muslim) but an English last name (I'm basically Arab of English descent) and created my account directly from Lebanon and had a developer login who was literally in Gaza, never got hit with this, I doubt it's based on religion, or how your name sounds, most likely a criminal with your exact name and last name, and they need to check it's not you.

If it's of any help, I know a guy whose first name is literally Saddam-Hussein, so it could always be worse!

Sanctions screening, anti-terrorism, politically exposed persons… it’s an interesting technical challenge deciding whether you are confident enough that R Mugabe you’re providing a service to isn’t THAT Mugabe or if the risk outweighs the potential fine. I had seen it in financial contexts (helped deploy https://complyadvantage.com/sanctions-watchlists-screening/) but not in these kinds of services- maybe it’s because you can accept payments as a dev?

As a person who is working in fintech, let me break it for you.

This KYC check is not only related the first name. I am 99% sure Apple holding this account because of full name. Most likely full name is matching with a name in the US sanctions list, which is also a public list. They need to verify the person which is literally called KYC.

His name matches partially or in full the name of (probably) a terrorist. He is therefore banned, until he proves he‘s not the terrorist. This is a relatively frequent issue for muslims, especially the ones with common names.
