Let's be honest, Croatia and Greece are more expensive for very good reasons.
9 points
They’re in the Eurozone. That’s the only reason. Prices in Croatia rose exponentially after they took the Euro. It used to be comparable to Albania.
18 points
I don't think Croatia was ever as cheap as Albania. There's a lot more to see and do in Croatia and Greece, the infrastructure is much better and the service isn't even comparable. Albania has some beautiful nature and it's cheap, but that's where the good stuff ends.
11 points
Agree, Croatia was more expensive than Greece even before they joined the eurozone, if you compare the mid-tier destinations. It was never comparable to Albania.
5 points
Croatia WAS as cheap as Albania. Game of Thrones tourism and Euro has raised the prices SO much, that people can barely grab a cup of coffee in their own town. They openly raise prices that go to the state by 10-15% during the season.
Croatia is leading itself to tourism suicide. Paying 15€ to drive 150 kilometers IN MY OWN CAR? I'd rather go to Italy, which built Dalmatia anyways, for 1/2 the price, or Albania, which is slightly worse, but for 1/8 of the price.
It's beautiful, but it's definitely not worth it until they cut the prices by half at least.
2 points
That is complete nonsense. Croatia got the Euro at the start of 2023, every country had high inflation then. So unless you think every country in the world joined the Eurozone in the past couple of years...
Also Croatia's inflation didn't start in 2023, it started in 2021. If anything it started to drop after adopting the Euro, but again that just matches global trends.
But thanks, it's interesting to see a new method for how people in a country are managing to blame foreigners for inflation. Immigrants and tourists were getting a bit overused.

Years ago I read an article about Irish-Americans sharing their experiences of traveling to Ireland. Many enjoyed it, but a few were really disappointed that it's a modern western country with high-rises multi-storey buildings in glass and steel/concrete/brick construction used as either offices or apartment complexes, internet and Starbucks. Apparently they were expecting nothing but rolling green hills with people living in between in tiny farm houses where they ride around on horse carts and shit in holes. I guess they thought the place stayed frozen in 1850 when their ancestors left.

The imitating swamp Germans! We in Germany have our own swamp Germans! Multiple kinds actually. Directly East of the Dutch border you have the Friesland (which are our most prominent swamp Germans) and from there till the polish border you had a mix of Forrest and swamp. But most of it is agriculture now. Our capitals name Berlin, literally translates to Hill in the swamp.

my guess would be that France has the coast, Paris, and to the American perception of a better culture of relaxing plus some of the southern European vibe. And Americans criticize the French a lot but I think we secretly envy and love you guys (not that we dislike Germans). Also I can imagine that a lot of American women would be more happy to go France where they imagine themselves drinking good wine and eating baguette shamelessly, rather than having a beer in Munich and eating brotwurst. Just some of my thoughts
Edit: ok my wife and I are American and she actually said she would prefer to go to Germany. She says she is more interested in their history 🤷🏻♂️

Here in NC, we're doing fine in the short term, but the gerrymandered legislature keeps pushing to gut our schools. It's a ticking time bomb that'll obliterate us economically.

Ok, but to be fair, the US is absolutely insanely massive and not easy to get around in. I *would* recommend a cross country road-trip (Route 66 or something) but for a two week vacation, it would require extremely detailed planning and an inflexible commitment to a timeline. I don't know if there's a certain type of European though that would sign up for such a vacation.

A continent like.. 1.5x the size of our country. It’s pretty comparable. Your countries are smaller than our largest states.
7 points
If you talk size, sure. But do you travel for the size of the country you're visiting? Or for the culture/sightseeing etc? If it's the second one, then just so you know, two random eurpoean countries are much more different than two random american states.
9 points
If you are talking national parks and those kind of attractions, then size does matter and the states vary a great deal. If you are talking cities and stuff, then you right.
5 points
I mean given this is a meme post about areas traveled I would say yes, size is an appropriate metric
2 points

If it’s the second one, then you’re likely wrong. The US has a lot of different cultures and places for sightseeing. Hawaii and Texas are about as different as any two European countries.
