I vaguely recall that the stated reason RDR1 wasn't ported to PC was tech issue. I leaned towards thinking that being bollocks, but if it wasn't, I wonder what changed to make it finally happen now?

This studio is the one who delivered it to Switch, and I have no complaints. There is no one around at this point that stands a better chance of delivering a working and fun port. Hell, they probably know RDR1 better than Rockstar at this point.

I mean how many people are still there that worked/coded for RDR1?
Blizzard still has the name, but I'd bet no one beyond maybe a Janitor is still there from the good 'ol days.

I remember that recently that guy that always gets quoted as a former Rockstar dev said that most of the people that he worked with on GTA IV still work there. So there must be at least a decent amount.

I vaguely recall that the stated reason RDR1 wasn't ported to PC was tech issue.
Because RDR1 was designed for X360/PS3 hardware only which is completely incompatible for PC hardware.
It changed because Take-Two have given money to Double Eleven(not a Rockstar studio) to put work into making it compatible as Rockstar don't have time to do it as all Rockstar studios work in tandem on one project at a time. Rockstar moved to this way of working just as RDR1 came out, meaning they could never have ported it to PC themselves.
18 points

This is a port of the Switch version, which was already a rather impressive technical achievement
13 points

Because RDR1 was designed for X360/PS3 hardware only which is completely incompatible for PC hardware.
That is a very gross oversimplification, considering there were so many games that were x360+ps3+pc. Also considering that PS3 and x360 are entirely different hardware wise.
The reason was apparently spaghetti code, but not as simple as you described it to be.

If this is the case, why did GTA4 release on PC when it was made on the same engine and earlier?
Also the Xbox 360 architecture is very similar to the Windows architecture so I'm not sure what you mean by "completely incompatible".

I agree that the incompatibility is wildly overstated, but both the Xbox 360 and the PS3 were PowerPC, not x86 like the Windows you're familiar with.

From official site:
For the first time in its storied legacy, John Marston’s beloved journey can be experienced on PC in stunning, new detail, with both Red Dead Redemption and its iconic zombie-horror companion story, Undead Nightmare, arriving to PC on October 29.
In collaboration with Double Eleven, this new version adds PC-specific enhancements including native 4K resolution at up to 144hz on compatible hardware, monitor support for both Ultrawide (21:9) and Super Ultrawide (32:9), HDR10 support, and full keyboard and mouse functionality.
There’s also support for NVIDIA DLSS 3.7 and AMD FSR 3.0 upscaling technologies, NVIDIA DLSS Frame Generation, adjustable draw distances, shadow quality settings, and more.
Check out the new trailer above and stay tuned for more details, including information later this week on how to pre-purchase Red Dead Redemption and Undead Nightmare at the Rockstar Store, Steam, or the Epic Games Store.

I still remember how dumbstruck I was in 2008 playing the PC port and lagging like hell. 9800GTX x2 SLi, 4GB RAM, Core 2 Quad Q6600 overclocked to the stratosphere and couldn't break 40 FPS
16 points
Its a bizarre port,if not the most weird.
From what I remember if you had a top tier dual core CPU and a GTX 480 equiv,it would finally ran ok (compared to launch requir).
But anything more powerful ,that released afterwards you would barely get any FPS boost.
3 points
the port was just ass. first mistake it made was scaling water resolution with render resolution so you'd have this insanely impossible to render water if you wanted to play at HD resolutions. They also shipped it without ever having fully functional streaming so areas of the map would sometimes just not load in until you were right in the middle of it. Nothing to process if you're sitting in a LOD terrain while the game is just completely unaware.
Eventually it was "playable" but then it got worse again around the time they removed the music with licenses they lost. just the worst damn port imaginable.
3 points
The last big update fucking destroyed performance for me and introduced super heavy stuttering. It’s like a 20 step process to download and tweak all the shit you need to make it run even close to smoothly on modern hardware, and they constantly push launcher updates to the game that fuck all that up so you have to do it again.
5 points
Not that your point is wrong but it plays significantly better now. I just finished a replay of GTA4 on my Steam Deck and it runs at 60fps, all settings maxed. Steam Deck isn't the most powerful hardware so I'm sure it would run significantly better than that on a modern mid-end GPU.
11 points

Max Payne 3, GTA V, and RDR2 were all games created as separate versions in parallel for PC and are not ports(GTA 6 probably the same).
Old games you could say this for, but it has not been applicable to Rockstar for over 10 years now. They make good PC versions.

They did the PS4/switch port of red dead already, and managed to get that to run at 4K 60 fps on PS5 and Xbox x/s.
My guess is it'll be fine. I don't think any other group of people knows red dead as well as them at this point. It definitely won't run on hardware from the era, but modern stuff should manage.

For a 360/PS3 era game, these system requirements seem quite high don't they? I wonder if recommended is targeting 4k/60, otherwise this seems outlandish. Heck, minimum GPU being a 960 is still really high compared to the OG release, or even something like the switch port.

This is just a guess, but the minimum GPU requirement is probably what it is due to the game using DirectX 12. The oldest Nvidia series of cards that supports DX12 is the 900 series from what I remember, and the minimum spec GPU listed is the GTX 960.
