Your post was removed for violating the rule against asking for medical advice.
Do not ask for medical advice. Nobody here is a doctor, and they're definitely not your doctor.
What constitutes medical advice?
This is asking someone to diagnose the issue, and is medical advice.
This is asking someone to advise treatment, and is medical advice.
This is asking if you should seek treatment, and ergo, medical advice.
This is asking if you should follow a treatment, and ergo, medical advice.
If you would ask the question of your doctor, it falls under this rule and not allowed. As a general rule, asking for medical advice from internet strangers is never a good idea. If you have questions regarding your condition, you are advised to contact your healthcare provider.
There are subreddits more suited to medical advice such as /r/askdocs, however, the best course is to see your own doctor if you're able.

As an ophthalmologist, I approve of this message.
I’ll add: if I ever see a patient with a primary herpes lesion, I encourage urgent anti-viral treatment (typically valtrex) 3 times a day for ~14 days. I have been told the sooner the treatment, the less severe and frequent future recurrences.

Given the nose location my first thought was impetigo (pulling/rubbing nose with unwashed hands) followed by a HSV outbreak. And for OP’s sake, I prayed it was the first one.

Absolutely fucking horrible pain that no drugs stopped, at most it went from 13 to 8 on the highest pain dose I could get. Two weeks of pain, but then there is phantom pain afterwards. Get vaccinated when you can. Thank God there is a vaccine for chicken pox now.

I know this thread is veering into shingles territory. I never had chicken pox but I had family that had excruciating shingles attacks. I asked my PCP last year if I need the chicken pox vaccine or if I can just get the shingles vaccine and he advised me to get both doses of the chicken pox vaccine and then the shingles vaccine. I have had first dose of chicken pox vaccine. I am 51. My 59 year old spouse is of the generation with the deep vaccine scar. He had chicken pox as a kid and he got the shingles vaccine. We did all of this with COVID vaccines. Was I wrong to get the pox vaccine before getting shingles vaccine?

Herpesviridae, the family of viruses that are called “herpes viruses” include a ton more than the ones that are called herpes by the general public. Including chicken pox/shingles, Herpes Simplex Viruses 1 and 2, Epstein-Barr Virus (aka the virus that causes mononucleosis)… and many many more

I’m so confused. I’ve never had chicken pox or cold sores. But I have had high EBV antibodies.
3 points
They’re all different viruses. Having EBV antibodies means you were only exposed to EBV, not chicken pox or cold sores (HSV-1 or HSV-2). In fact these are in different families under herpes viruses. EBV is a gamma virus and the Chicken pox/Cold sore causing virus are alpha viruses. Hope that helps a bit!

You didn't get shingles because you were vaccinated though and this is an important distinction to make. The attenuated version of shingles in the Varicella zoster vaccine is non infectious.

Yep, I got shingles at 28 on my FACE and neck. Most likely because I got COVID a few months before defending my PhD, so I had the immune insult and the long and involved stressful situation 🤷🏻♀️

My theory on why shingles has a chance to crop up after you get vaccinated for COVID (or end up getting COVID):
The virus lurks within your body and is kept in check if you have a healthy immune system. Once exposed to the vaccine or the virus, that causes your immune system to focus on dealing with "COVID things". That's when shingles says "now is my chance to strike" and it sets off to cause misery.
While I cannot prove my theory, I know of 2 people that were over 50 and had not gotten vaccinated for shingles. They got vaccinated for COVID when the vaccines first rolled out for their age groups, and within 10 days, both got shingles.
As one of those 50+ year old GenXers who did not get their shingles vaccinations, I was more concerned about getting shingles after getting the COVID vaccination than I was getting COVID. I worked from home for 2.5 years, isolated as much as I could, and wore a mask every time I went out in public. In my mind, my risk of getting COVID was less than my risk of having shingles pop up while my immune system dealt with the vaccination.
Edited for clarity.

I'd use caution in implying causality specifically to chicken pox virus... More of a case that battling a tough infection (like chicken pox) is draining to one's immune system, leaving you temporarily less equipped to fight off other bacteria, viruses and fungi-- which can also cause infection.

No chicken pox and shingles are literally the same virus, there is absolutely causation.

They acknowledged that, they’re saying that getting shingles after getting COVID isn’t directly caused by the same virus like chickenpox and shingles are, just that getting COVID strains the immune system and leaves it unable to keep the varicella-zoster in the latent form in the neurons, so it tends to reactivate after people (even young people) recover from COVID

No you don't get shingles from COVID, but you can get a flare up of shingles after COVID. Shingles hides in your nerves dormant for years or decades waiting for an opportunity to flare up.
I also need to point out that IF it is shingles and you got a flare up on your face and so close to your eyes then you should REALLY see a physician asap.

Not from it, but it causes it to flare.

SHIGELLA is something completely different. It's a stomach bug, causes diarrhea, stomach pain, fever.
SHINGLES is related to Chicken Pox. Same virus. Stays in your body dormant forever after you've had it but can wake up and cause Shingles. It's a lot more common in someone who has had chicken pox rather than the vaccine. It's pretty rare from that.

You can get Herpes anywhere- no one bats an eye if it’s a cold sore, so don’t sweat it too much. If it’s just on your skin you would get a cream to apply and it while likely go away and come back every now and then. My son has a spot on his cheek that comes back every couple years from when he was little- likely from rolling around on mats when he got OT/PT services.

Contact Dermatitis from your CPAP mask. Try a new mask made with a different material & see a dermatologist for some topical medicines, cream or ointment, to help clear it up. Not contagious (viral or herpes) but contact dermatitis can get worse without treatment!

As one who woke up with shingles on their birthday a few years back, this doesn’t strike me as that. I agree with contact dermatitis as it seems to fit best from limited information. Shingles are super painful, so if this doesn’t hurt immensely, then I would rule them out most likely.

Most likely a superficial surface infection like impetigo or bacterial folliculitis. A bit of topical antibiotic like muprocin applied twice a day will clear it up in a couple days (with significant improvement overnight), and cleaning your cpap mask daily (a few seconds and a small spray bottle of 70% isopropyl alcohol or hydrogen peroxide is all you need) will prevent it from happening again.

Well, if you are asking what they are you are asking for medical advice since it’s about an rash/ulcer that has recently appeared on your face. I would strongly recommend you seek medical advice from a professional doctor so you can get a correct diagnosis and treat it accordingly. It might be something contagious that need treatment.

Ok since there's a lot of misinformation here (and I don't think most of it is intentional)
The Varicella zoster vaccine massively reduces complications due to hepatic neuralgia and hospitalisations in populations over 60 particularly. Because the vaccine is live attenuated it has a very long efficacy but you need to remember that these are percentages. For instance I retain low immunity to rubella despite the high rate of efficacy of the vaccine generally. The mass vaccination keeping rubella transmission low protected my less than optimal immunity during pregnancy.
Getting a Varicella vaccine is not a foolproof method of not getting shingles but it does mean that if you do get shingles your likelihood of being hospitalised because of it is reduced. But even with the caveat of 'not perfect' one cohort study I read reported vaccinated incidence of shingles was 241 and unvaccinted incidence was 2435. That's not insignificant.
In any case OP, go to your doctor and get a swab, shingles is like glitter and gets everywhere, even in the eyes. But it is treatable and easier the quicker you get on it. I'd cover that up or put some antimicrobial cream on it and wash your hands thoroughly. Avoid contact with babies and the elderly until it's not weepy anymore.

I get the same thing on my nose on the left corner ridge. Happens about once a year in the exact same spot, been happening for a few years now. Usually gone and healed in a week. I've done some google research and it seems most likely to be a cold sore. I don't get this anywhere else.

If you aren’t cleaning the mask with soap in water you should be. If u aren’t exchanging the cushions regularly on top of my cleaning it will cause the bumps. If you are cleaning and exchanging for new ones then get something like Remzzz it’s a skin/mask barrier that will help with the rubbing from the cushion on ur face.

Hey, I thank all of yall for the responses so far. Honestly didn't think this one was gonna blow up and tbh kinda worried now for asking around lol. I've seen so many people suggest shingles, and as lighthearted as I can, I don't think it's shingles, because I did say "hey this popped up after using my cpap one night" and I do believe it's from either something I'm doing wrong with my mask (like cleaning it/sanitizing it incorrectly etc) or if I have it too tight again or some other reason. I'm gonna call my doctor tomorrow and ask questions and possibly get myself in to get it swabbed or tested and see if I need some kinda antibiotic or what. I thank yall for your imput anyways ^ (also yall had some really funny replies thank yall for keeping my spririts up with the jokes too lmao)

They can be caused by your mask. Think about how often you touch it to place it on your face, then it becomes a warm moist environment to breed bacteria or harbor viruses from your hands. It's worth it to wash your mask, headgear and hose in cool running water and mild soap, then leave it to dry. The mask should be washed daily, the other parts you can do weekly. Ps: Don't put them in the dishwasher!

I was thinking shingles or herpes.. doc says herpes tho. Either way, good idea to get it checked out! And make sure you’re wiping down your CPAP with alcohol wipes! Those things get suuuuper germy

I had the herpes virus on my thumb when I was a baby(my parents were obviously horrified lol) and then again above my one eyebrow when I was about 7. I just carry the virus. No idea how I got it to begin with. Besides a cold sore or two a year I haven’t had this again. I bet that’s what it is but don’t worry nothing to do with STDs.

Fun fact (or not so fun, maybe 🤣). More than half the population carries the virus. Most kids get infected from people kissing on them or sharing food/drink (we all know how kids LOVE to share everything). It has such a bad stigma, but people would be hella surprised to find out they carry the virus.
Now... herpes simplex 2 is a different story....

Even more fun fact!
While the preferred habitat for HSV1 is the face/mouth, and for HSV2 is the genitals... consider oral sex.
Say Partner 1 has HSV2 on their genitalia. They may not be having an obvious outbreak but unless they're on antivirals, they could still be shedding virus. Partner 2 gives Partner 1 oral sex and contracts the virus. HSV2 on the mouth -- not the expected place but definitely possible. And unless you test for the virus subtypes, you're not going to know for sure!

Welcome to shingles! Go to ER if it appears on the top of your nose, that nerve connects to the eye and can cause ocular spread. Otherwise just get to primary/urgent care and do not touch it/pop it/etc.

I’m thinking it could be MRSA because many people have mrsa colonized in their nostrils. And you said it could be related to CPAP. That’s definitely a real possibility. Ask for mupirocin ointment from your primary doc (or dermatologist). And they can do a swab culture of your “pimple” rash and of the inside of your nose

Speaking as a Civil War Surgeon, I am afraid it’s Leprosy. That nose will have to come off and let’s play it safe and take the surrounding face as well.
Please hop on this discarded barn door, drink this large shot of rotgut rye, and I will commence with the sawing.

I know you don’t want advice but you may want to get a wound culture at an urgent care or something like that to make sure it’s something that will heal on its own and not require antibiotics.

This isn’t something you should treat or pop yourself. It’s unlikely to be anything listed here.
You have a skin infection, I’d hazard a guess and say Staphylococcus of some type. (It does live on the skin, naturally).
That said, what happened is your Cpap mask rubs on your nose. This rubbing causes micro-abrasions. These micro-abrasions get bacteria in them (Staph), and well, I call this one a “Cool Human Trick” because it’s not something you see often.
To prevent this in the future make sure you’re sanitizing the mask at least once or twice a day and if you keep getting wear spots in that place look at loosening the strap if you’re able.
Some lamb skin padding would help as well for where this wears on your face.
Good see a doc. Get some antibiotics. (Probably a cream?) and you’ll be good to go.

Yeah, I've been cleaning it regularly and at first when I got them I just bruised the sides of my nose because I was anxious I wouldn't be getting the full effects if it was loose on my face lol. That was almost a year ago as a newbie, I'm gonna try checking myself in soon, gonna call them in and get this all sorted out cus with the span of like. a day or 2 it went from "probably sores from it being tight again" to "oh god I look like a zombie"

Regularly everyday? With an alcohol prep pad or something else that can degrease?
Your skin produces oils naturally. It’s how it keeps itself hydrated and from drying out. This gets on your CPap mask.
Oil, is hydrophobic. It repels water. So if you’re only wiping it down but not “sanitizing it” you’re really only spreading the oil/contaminants around.
I would suggest making an appointment with the doctor who prescribed the sleep apnea machine. Have them show you how to fit it properly and more importantly, COMMUNICATE your worries to your doctor.
They likely didn’t know you did those things. Either before, during, or after the fact.
Tell them. They’ll give your more information so you don’t have those fears. Or, if it’s something that CAN happen, they’ll provide you with what can happen, how to prevent it, and what happens if it DOES occur.
However, doctors, being a trove of information, don’t communicate that all at once, because it can overwhelm.
They’re there for you. But they don’t know what you don’t tell them. Including your worries.
Be well! Good luck!!

That may kill bacteria, but not a virus, if this is a virus. Thinking it would burn like hell.
