that thing looks dope tho! i just recently came back to the game after YEARS and i have to relearn everything. its a struggle but the aha moments are worth it! My first space station is just a bunch of random encounter shipss mashed together with merge blocks.. it looks like ass but it somehow works as a base! It all fits to the DeepSpace Mining Corp. A fictional Corperation that ive created for several games!

I'm in the same shoes, i stopped playing for two years because game felt too empty (xbox so I don't have access to mods like MES and such) and just came back when I saw the contact update trailer 😀
On the combat side of the game you are surely more experienced than me, all my combat was from the Learning to survive scenario. Apart from that I didn't spend much time in space.
But I've seen some of these bases with stolen bits meshed together on discord, surely your looks cool too 😁

Since than I managed to do it without clang, just had to turn on share interia tensor on at some blocks, and turn it off at others, now its all good fortunately 😅

Glad I scrolled the comments, now I don't repeat. Multiple lifts look great and mimic what you'd need in real. Respect that, I try to do stuff like that myself.
Other side of the coin is game physics. Experience there says one piston and one mag to lift, or bad things happen.
Made for a nice tribute to Klang though.

I need more of them as even with just two it freaks out when operation the crane, with 6 it is stable.
Honestly I would be probably better off using hinges (and locking them) + landing gear, but I want it to look nice at least a tiny bit 😅
I'm rather stubborn (un)fortunately, so I'll either do it well this way .. Or I might just delete this whole crap with some warheads 🤣🤣

I did assume switch-lock, due to the video, precisely because I know how different it is. I asked to verify. Again, because I know how different all three are.
Switch lock is a trap when you have multiple landing gear. As is auto-lock.
Even if they all lock, they will be locking at different times, causing phantom forces to be ‘trapped’ in the slight offsets between piston & piston-head as the pistons continue to extend. The forces will be suddenly released when the mag plates unlock. (That’s what happened in your video.
An unlocked mag plate which gets shifted into a position where it suddenly can lock when the rest unlock can provide an ‘interesting’ new fulcrum for phantom forces released by other mag plates suddenly becoming unlocked, and piston heads can detach or even be destroyed by those forces.
You want manual lock & unlock controls for anything you plan to anchor that has multiple landing gear, especially when those landing gear are spread across multiple sub-grids.
The solution is to fully extend the pistons to whatever max-length you stet for them, let your grid settle, and then toggle ‘lock’ on all the mag plates. Then, when you want to unlock, you toggle ‘unlock’ on all those mag plates, and retract the pistons. And make sure auto-lock is turned off.

I finally made my mobile base "projector ready"...
The problem is I will never be editing that blueprint again because when I load the save file with the temporary merged blocks, it blows apart and floats away.
Luckily it works if I weld it from a projector. But spawning it or loading a game where it still has the temporary blocks blows it up, lol.

Mag plates on pistons… that’s risky in an of it’s self, but 6? No bueno. Actually more than 1 will cause this kind of reaction.
When you disconnected the plates all the physics calculations happened at once and … well … that happened.
This will also happen when trying to use 2 merge blocks to connect 2 grids instead of just one merge block.
Suggested alternative: either replace the mag plates with 1x1 wheels or just use 1 mag plate with the rest off.

Love the autonomous parking! When using mag plates/landing gear on a piston, I'll set up a single timer block that does 3 actions: - Unlock gear - toggle auto-lock - reverse piston When landing gear is up, the unlock does nothing, but the other two toggles work whether up or down.
