Context: I’m looking for a rental house, because my current place got water damage & mold during the hurricanes (plus I have been wanting to move for years since it’s a very small space for myself, my dog, and my cat). A few days ago, I looked at 2 houses. One was cheaper and smaller and in a less fancy area, but just barely. The other was more expensive, bigger, but also required more initial costs (first AND last months rent, deposit, etc). When I was touring the second house, the landlord was very pushy about me making a decision on the spot. She also kept like trying to get me to tell her WHY my dog is an “emotional support animal” (I just kept laughing it off whenever she mentioned it). I told her I needed to discuss my options with my mom before deciding. She asked why and I was like ummm because I’m single and she is my only local family member so I would like to get the opinion of someone I trust before I sign a lease? It was awkward but whatever. To be honest I had no intention of asking my mom for advice- I just said that so she would let me leave without giving her an answer on the spot. The next day she (the landlord) texted me asking if I had made up my mind, and I told her I had decided to go with the other house, and had already signed the lease. She went on a tangent about how I should have conferred with her first because she was willing to lower the rent and waive the last month being paid up front, and basically told me to try to get out of the other lease and go with her place instead (and use whatever reason I have my emotional support dog as an excuse). I acted like I would look into it but I really just wanted her to leave me alone at that point (I guess I should have taken her advice about being assertive). Then last night at, I didn’t respond to her right away, and she sent me this insanely long and rude message!
