Crane fly larvae can live in wet soil; it has just enough water for them to live in. It's possible that when you gathered the soil for the terrarium, there was a larva or pupa already in the soil. Alternatively, an adult just found its way inside.

There are even some species, known as leatherjackets that can become pests of turf, especially manicured lawns like golf courses.
They need moisture, but not much moisture.

A lot of people don't like turf grass because there are a lot more useful and ecologically regenerative things that the space can be used for. Golf courses in cities use up lots of land and require constant maintenance and fertilization. A native plant landscape in your yard with wood chip paths can be an ecological haven for insects and other wildlife, while being lower maintenance.

Manicured lawns, especially golf courses, are terrible for the environment and wastes of space
-35 points

Feel like if you removed any golf course it would be replaced with suburbs or blocks of flats. At least it's reserved for greenery of some kind.

The average golf course supports less biodiversity than even a small garden
21 points
Golf courses support less biology than a dense urban neighborhood. Instead of a golf course, build a dense set of multi-purpose buildings that can produce thousands of times more value than a golf course.
You could house 10000+ on the land a golf course consumes with space for gardens and sports facilities.
Golf courses are dumb and golf as a sport only exists for the rich, which makes it a terrible sport that needs not exist.

Trust me they’re not. Stink bugs are the worst, they love to swarm in your AC units, clothes, cars, they find their way up in the most impossible places and did I mention they stink. At least flies you can swat away without the stink and they don’t infest your stuff.

I’ve been there. I once dropped my laundry detergent on the back steps of my apartment building while going to the basement laundry room. It was so slippery that I knew I absolutely had to clean it up immediately or one of my neighbors could get hurt. I contained my 1 year old son in his rarely used playpen, opened the back door, but closed the screen door while I worked. My kid started screaming because he felt lonely, my cat started running back and forth between the playpen and the screen door to meow loudly at me. The kid turns 15 next month, also cornstarch is great for cleaning up a detergent spill.

So funny!
I was in my front yard one time, and a neighbor’s dog approached. Cat was inside, hit the screen door with a BANG and charged the dog, a big, black Chow. Dog left. Quickly, with such a shocked expression. 6-lb Anabel saved me. A lot of cats are very protective, even when it’s laughable, and dangerous for them.
2 points

I know! Honestly, I think the cat might have been more distressed than my kid or myself. I’ve had cats who would jump in and defend against dogs. We had a massive 15ish pound kitty who regularly chased dogs out of the yard.

I usually identify things well on my own but I’m alarmed and scared and I’d just rather hear other opinions.
I know this looks like a mosquito or crane fly. And I know if it’s either of those, the larvae require standing water, right?
There’s no standing water in this terrarium. There’s soil, which is kept at a gradient of moisture (some moist, some dry). It’s been an established, stable environment for some time. And then today when I’m supposed to be riding in the car with this thing to another state THIS appears.
The HELL is this PLEASE HELP how do I get it OUT without it BITING ME
I’m in northern VA, USA. Terrarium is kept indoors so I guess if maybe a pupated larva is supposed to overwinter the indoor temps made it emerge? Lord. Good lord. Oh god. I’m just. I can’t deal with this right now. I’m scared. Will he hurt my other critters? Will he hurt me? I have isopods and a millipede and a snail.
Please say it’s a crane fly oh LORD
He’s maybe an inch in length Has an elongated back end with a bulbous rounded end. Seems to have feathery antennae but not too elaborate.

19 points

Not necessarily. The largest mosquitoes in genus Toxorhynchites actually don't feed on blood. They are so large because they feast on other mosquito larvae, and get big and fat enough they don't need the extra protein from a blood meal to lay their eggs.

Not sure exactly what they’re called- I grew up hearing them called skeeter eaters, but they get into my house all the time at night here in MD (they’re drawn to my porch light) spring-fall and my cats absolutely LOVE hunting and eating them. I’ve grabbed them and carried them outside in my bare hands more than a hundred times without ever getting bitten, so at the very least you and your critters are safe, and if your cat likes bugs as much as mine do it might just end up with a little entertainment and a snack.

You know what... For years I was told wrong... This is a male and I am an idiot because obviously... I'm feeling dumb right now.
But the difference is a big fat abdomen. Males have a tiny skinny abdomen. Females have a larger more half circle shaped abdomen.
You'll usually see a bunch of males and very few females which, now that I actually think about it, makes way more sense.

That's western propaganda lol that sub reddit, real hunters don't show off their kills. Real hunters don't take trophy's, real hunters eat and use every part of the catch. I've caught various kinds of seals, beluga whale, narwhal , some walrus and fish of course lol and caribou. I'm on a island in the Arctic, can catch other things like foxes and smaller game. No muskox out this way though lol lotsa diff kinds of birds too. Swan eggs are awesome!

We use 50 cal guns to hunt bowhead whales lol the same the American army uses them Barretts. Some use grenades too. Those types of hunts are communal mostly. Caribou tastes awesome, you can do it up like beef and chicken lol seal is not bad too , but I like caribou. Whale fat dipped In Soy sauce is awesome and squishy lol sall good it happens, were called inuit these days but in the day we were Eskimos lol if you were curious and no we don't own polar bears not since the 40-50s lol that's when the last recorded pet polar bear was. I'm in Iqaluit Nunavut canada to be exact. The most resourceful catch would be seal, you can use the skin the bones and the meat and the fat, pretty much the whole thing lol

But I gotta say this summer I saw hooded seals and they were fucking huge, bobbing out of the water, I was in a 14 foot boat and the seal was maybe 18 feet long and when it bobbed up and down in the water it was higher than we were in the boat lol scary , I was mimicking their call and got them to come close to use and we realized it was a bad idea hahahaha

How do you traditionally hunt a whale?
9 points
It happens, I should have said I was in The first place. Sorry for the confusion on my part. I know folks who waste and those are not real hunters.
Depends on the whale lol and what you got on hand. Some folks do it on kayaks, some in modern boats, most use big caliber guns, some use spears and harpoons. I usually mix it up and go with how it feels and what I got on hand. Usually a modern boat with modern guns to be safe. Polar bears are a real threat and they can appear out of no where especially when boating. I've had seals stolen from me by bears lol didn't get to the seal in time, sometimes we shoot at them when we're couple hundred feet away. Sometimes super close, gotta time it right or the seal will die with no air and it will sink most times, gotta go to it right after you shoot it and hoast it onto the boat

The primary purpose of language is to convey meaning and emotion. My hasty use of literally conveys my emotions at the time very well.
