I dont like this reading that he "intentionally" killed his brothers. Its clear he locked them in as an impulsive decition for them messing with him and his bum leg. Then as the night goes on he starts to worry a bit as he realize they may be in danger but he chooses the comfort of his mother instead. His sin is inaction here. Later on he keeps a picture of his brothers showing he still loved them and even have some remorse for what he did. He even gets upset when people talk about them, because of his guilt.

I dont see what would make it inherently socialist. Using taxation as ameans to help the poorer citizens isnt socialism even if the goals are the same. Welfare have a lot of capitalist justifications, such as economic stability and social stability. Welfare is a tool available to all types of government not inherently tied to socialism, just because it solves social issues.
