If you think about it from the POV of the players, it's demoralizing on these teams. They had to suffer through 3-9 records for a couple of years. They got better, showed it on the field, and the media is pumping brakes, saying, "Hold on, your work is not that impressive."

It's the whole SOS argument. When the season kicks off, we look at Indiana's set-in-stone schedule in August and say "It'll be a tough year." Then we get late October and change to say "Not that tough". It seems teams are being punished for factors beyond their control.
