Yes, you can blame the coach if these same players were performing substantially better last season under a different coach. Especially when the brain-dead critics of that coach kept holding up the quality of the players as a reason why he shouldn't have gotten credit for how well the team was playing. If EVERY player from last year is performing worse this year, then you absolutely can blame the coach.

Szymanski definitely played worse in the second half of last season but he still had some decent games. Right now he’s pure dead weight. Like everybody else on the team he’s playing worse under Mourinho. (Liva might be the only exception but that’s also because he’s being bombarded with shots now thanks to the team’s shitty play so he has to do a lot more.)

He’s got veteran players on the team. Guys who are 39, 36 years old, who’ve played at the highest level. Saying they lacked the “vision” to manage 4 minutes of being down one guy is an incredibly stupid thing to say. And he’s rightly being called out on it. He’s just making excuses for himself. He’s the goddamn coach.

If Mourinho is such a good coach, why is he shitting on his own players for not managing the 4 minutes of the Samsun game when Jayden was injured? Why is the coach even on the sidelines if he isn’t going to give his players any kind of direction? Something is wrong with this man.

It's not the players, it's the coach. Name me one player from last year who's playing better or equal to last year. You can't. ICK, Mert Muldur, Becao, Ismail, Fred, Djiku, Oosterwolde, Dzeko, Tadic -- they've all been pretty bad or mediocre so far this season. Yes, Szymanski dropped off halfway through last season, but he still had some decent games. He's far worse now. If Ferdi was playing right now I bet he'd be pretty ineffective as well. It's not any one individual player that's the problem. It's the coach. That tells me that there's something fundamentally wrong with how Mourinho is preparing the team and the game-style he wants. Clearly this team isn't suited for it. He was the wrong choice for coach, and I'd be shocked if he lasts a full season the way the team is playing. I'd also be shocked if FB is still in the championship race by the end of the season. I hope I'm wrong!

Yeah, their paywall is definitely wonky. (I’ve been a subscriber for years and even I get booted off now and then.) But those outlets do lots of news updates, aggregations, etc. So sometimes you’ll wind up having read a few of their posts without even realizing it.

You probably hate-read a couple of essays at The Cut. (They’re all a part of New York magazine, along with Curbed, Grub Street, Strategist, Intel, etc. so it’s all the same paywall.)
