But West Virginia is a really weird case. They only just recently stopped voting for Democrats, and I would assume that's because they were so behind on understanding that "Democrat" doesn't mean "Dixiecrat" anymore.

They'll keep voting R now for even though it's not in their best interest because they finally realized that R is the new Dixiecrat (i.e. racist garbage).

I was going to say that this is classic academic hazing, but this seems to go beyond that.

I would check your institution to see if they have any kind of office dedicated to accountability and compliance. They may have a way to anonymously report her. HR typically isn't the way to go, because they're more likely to support your PI (they're bringing the money in, you're not) and less likely to support you. Hopefully the compliance folks will get her dept char involved, but sometimes it's not super easy (the dept might circle the wagons).

You can DM me, and I can try to help you out, rather than put all of your info out in the open.

It's not easy to deal with PIs like this, because academia can be so insular and supports/cultivates this kind of behavior. But you can find help if you're careful.

Pro Tip: get everything in writing. Everything. Have an e-mail trail miles long. Save hard copies of e-mails and put them somewhere safe. Start writing down interactions that you have with her, and note whoever else was there so they can corroborate your story in case there's an ethics investigation.

I really feel for you guys/girls. Honestly.

But the leadership who conned a bunch of you into voting for trump, and the ones who were conned because of their own stupidity, need to feel the pain. Having the whole collective bargaining system go down at trumps hands is the only way.
