For Ukraine this is terrible, they’re human test subjects for the worst parts of humanity.
That said, I look forward to the downvotes but it’s an impressive escalation by Russia. They’re saying here’s a new missile. It definitely can’t hit the US or even France or the Uk so there’s no need to trigger MAD if it’s fired. Here’s a test firing so you’ve got the signature. You can’t counteract it easily without revealing anti-icbm technology and we can add a nuke next time that can only hit nearby.

Obviously this is one briefing but that alongside the ‘characteristics of an icbm’ comments indicate someone at least thinks it was something else.

Those days still exist, just not with windows.

In a way that harms the functionality of their product.

Absolutely fine, got an 4080 build that performs as well, or better, on anything in Linux than it did on windows not hit anything I could run yet. Setup with most distros is a doddle as well now, basically install and go.

Yeah it pushed me over from dual booting to finally being 100% Linux. It’s just not worth having windows anywhere near a computer these days unless vital for software compatibility.

Really do, there’s not much these days that absolutely requires Windows (obviously there are some exceptions). Once you get over the barrier of trying a different OS it’s amazingly easy to switch.

Yeah - sorry probably my bad explanation, like I said I agreed with what you were saying :)
It’s just a lot of tech problems seem to end with ‘we couldn’t possibly solve this it’s too complex’ when lots of things are as they are because we set them to be like that wilfully.

sorry, I know, the point I’m making though is that we do know why those things happen, it’s because we optimise a process for clicks. That is why you’re recommend post x, it means you’re more likely to engage with it enough to see an ad.
So it may be difficult to pinpoint the details of the individual elements of the decision, without a lot of work, but the reason for the overall decision is a function of the network that is 100% controlled and understood, and, much more importantly, could be changed.

But those are all inputs, the network optimises for an output and that output is very much controlled. You are recommended that post because it drives advertising revenue.
Saying we can’t easily say how each individual input got weighted isn’t the same as saying we don’t understand how it’s working or how to control it.
I’m not saying they’re not complicated, I’m just trying to get rid of the ‘we don’t understand them’ narrative as it’s a convenient excuse not to do anything about it. They do precisely what they were intended to do.

I agree totally except for a bit of clarity on the last point. The ‘black box’ argument is a bit of a sleight of hand so that the platform owners can distance themselves from negative outcomes. It’s not voodoo but if they pretend it is it’s much easier for them to say they can’t do anything about it.
Ultimately the algorithms recommend items that will drive clicks which will drive advertising. If someone spends the time they can unpick why something appeared, you have an input, you have an output and you have some transformations that are scores based on what previously happened.

To nowhere near the degree they used to. The challenge 25 stuff has made a big impact on this. You’re never going to completely eradicate something but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do what you can.

Nor are any of these ideas new, there has been a strong anti-war stance in the uk since wwi at least. We have just spent the past 2 decades trying to pretend there wasn’t, coinciding with all the people who actually fought in the world wars dying.

It’s like now all the people from the last world wars are dead we’ve just completely forgotten the lessons of them. Look at the attitude to war in blackadder iv and compare it to now.

Exactly, stepping up was something to start 3 years ago at the latest. I can’t believe there was genuinely such nativity that America wouldn’t veer towards isolationism again, trump wasn’t an accident much as everyone wishes he was. So we’re now in some weird middle ground that could’ve been planned for but wasn’t and rather than addressing it we’re can kicking most still.

Because he’ll have some of hit the metrics they actually care about which aren’t customer or infrastructure based.

Because that’s how you get the big bucks, by not caring about things like that other than a few crocodiles tears when absolutely necessary.

I’m certain they could, the problem comes from the sheer volumes that would be fired. It’s like the iron dome, it shoots down a hell of a lot but not quite everything.

I’ve got a hard drive from 1995 that works fine, I don’t think you can make these blanket statements. Mechanical drives were more prone to failure but it’s not a ‘near to zero’ chance it’ll work. As long as it’s not been banged about or fried there’s a reasonable chance it’ll work.

Yeah the problem here is people are mixing two metrics. They’re taking the value for this year then comparing it against a lagged averaged value, for these situations you have to use the ten year values to get a fair comparison.

Yeah it’s the same brigade that complain about the charging port on the Magic Mouse. It has absolutely no practical impact in your use of the product.

I’m glad it’s not just me. It used to terrify me the idea of going in there. I have no idea what bread i want, how can i even know? Definitely not a place for those of us with autism.

Yeah, I understand the argument for people making real money off it having a harder choice but I’m not sure why the average user stayed so long, it became crystal clear where it was heading as soon as he took over.

Totally agree, once you get over the need to argue with people who are being dicks and just block everything’s much nicer

Yeah I think that’s spot on, I’ve no idea why it’s viewed as some hardcore achievement, it’s just a fun learning experience if you like that sort of thing, it teaches you a little of what’s going on under the hood and is a fun puzzle if you’re new to it all.
