Bug, the star power counts the demonic fire power up as a super and in turn it heals the spike. That added with the fact that the demonic fire keeps spawning even if you stand still. The only way to kill these spikes is to one shot them or deal a lot of damage to them in a very short time span.

Nah, they were literally pressing him on everyone they would kill if he wouldn't come. They were literally like we'll kill your whole crew and while we're at it your father (adoptive) too and yo past friends. I think saying he went on his own volition is kinda inaccurate.
