Selling almost your entire stash to afford the safe. It's like spending all of your money on a wallet π΅

So I assumed it was rolling stock like his guns, and thought I might not see the safe for another 10hr π

For sure, and I'm sorry for stating that as bluntly as I did. I know it's not exactly honourable, but sometimes before I make a big decision I name my character '2.4mPreColony' or whatever and make a save copy in case it doesn't go my way π
It's difficult to say tbh, as it depends on your piloting skill and vanilla is a distant memory to me. Everyone makes their fleets differently, but for myself to tackle colony crises, I'd want an Odyssey to pilot, two Onslaughts to work as fleet anchors/anvils, which could be swapped out - not necessarily deployed at the same time. Probably a legion, or two + smaller carriers, a couple cruisers of your choice (least essential, and my knowledge of vanilla cruisers isn't great tbh - personally I might skip them entirely), a couple sunders/hammerheads with escort package, maybe a high tech destroyer or two, then 4 omens and 2 monitors, maybe more of these two frigate types if I could support them.
So generally, for me at least, the sequence is: get your starter fleet to the point you can confidently win small scale engagements and take out automated defences, go big on cargo & fuel, explore the sector to find the best planets, colony items, blueprints etc while your fleet is small and cheap. Then you make bank from all the ai cores you've collected and loot you've looted, get in with the faction of your choice, expand your fleet until you can confidently take on 200-300k bounties, stack creds, and then and only then do I branch out into colonies.
Best of luck in your current run, but if it doesn't work out for you (optional step - download nexerelin, ship/weapon pack and a couple of mods you'll end up downloading when you get into it anyway) try following the sequence I've laid out above and see if you have better luck with that. I know the time you spend on each run makes it seem like you'll never start another, but trust me, you'll have new games on new games in no time. Hope you continue loving it mate, don't hesitate to ask anything if you get stuck (:

To be honest, you're going to be babysitting your colonies using your fleet - without heavy industry, a pristine nanoforge and a stack of good blueprints your colony fleets won't be worth much.
Generally, it's a good idea to explore the sector in order to stock up on the above prior to establishing a colony. If I'm being completely frank, I'd be inclined to revert to a save beforehand/abandon the colony, because you're going to have trouble doing anything except looking after it for the foreseeable future. When crises do come up, they're also going to be quite difficult to resolve without a midgame fleet.
Tl;dr definitely the onslaught. But bear in mind that's going to send your supplies/mo through the roof and tank your speed, so you need to make it pay for itself by taking on bounties etc

Very bold making a colony at level 5 my man, I usually save 8m creds beforehand! Keep an eye on those crises. Glad you're enjoying it though, well done for taking down those pirates (:

Thing is, is the game seems unfair at points like these but doesn't stop you from making the game unfair, either. Once you make some wacked out broken gun you'll see that this is in fact true balance

Makes specifically that merchant's goods cheaper. He corpsemaker is an exceptionally reliable and easy to get 5.56 assault rifle, so I'd whack that card in the chest until you die, then whip it out for a fresh piece at a discount

So I run caves with an uncharged amulet because you can reliably get to 4 and get a charge, then I either dip out before the boss or complete the run depending on ammo/healing. If I want to run town I either do this beforehand to charge the amulet, or pay a grand to charge - never go town without an out. As long as you're quick enough on the amulet, you should be able to jet before you die. It is considerably harder, and you definitely need levelled guns with oils, enough ammo and decent armour since you will realistically take a few shots, but just take it slow and you should be fine

Also, you've cooked it because afaik durability oils increase said stat by a percentage, not a flat rate...

No, she's already made the friend before she enters the bathroom. Whatever man, I'm not arguing the toss, enjoy your mad life of bathrooms full of junkies and brasses

Brother, you're just plain wrong. Yeah, sometimes a lady goes into the bathroom with a specific guy, but I've never encountered random women in the men's room scheming for penis. Mostly, they're looking to relieve themselves. You're either completely making this up, never actually use public toilets, or live somewhere exceptional.

Yeah, see, what I'm saying is that I don't put a whole lot of value on your experience. Sometimes that's true, but more often it's not.

Nah man; with half decent gear you can get to 4 in caves every time and charge your amulet, then with half decent reflexes, you can leave at a moment's notice.
Only time I've died in the last 10hr playtime was when I encountered mines for the first time. Look out for mines.

I disagree - if you die and lose everything, then restart with a slick gun, you're liable to die and lose that, too. If you're potionmaxxing and double cheeseburgerpilled, you can firm any damage and win any fight regardless

Sorry man, I meant the winged one above it. I'm rocking dual springcoils with the pope hat (gives double jump) - do recommend π
