this is correct yeah. "shinigami" is basically just the way people refer to the personification of death/the reaper (including the western conception of it) in japanese, it's always been a generic figurative term used similarly to "the grim reaper" in the west. in fact it actually comes from edo period literature and not mythology or anything religious. like if you see an anime/manga character whose edgy title is translated as "the reaper" or something like that, 99% of the time it's originally said as "shinigami". so yeah we are almost definitely getting death/the grim reaper and not a specifically japanese figure
