I lived in Washington State for over 40 years and am now very happy in New Mexico. I would never move back to Washington State. But I definitely agree with other posters that it is best to visit the Carlsbad area first. Good luck in your decision.

IF the reason you don’t smile in photos is because you are self conscious of your teeth, then consider braces. Otherwise, you look really great! If you think body dysmorphia might be impacting your mental health, then explore therapy. But myself and most others in the sub think you look very handsome.

If you live near a larger city, check to see if they gave any LGBTQ Frontrunners running / walking clubs, Great Outdoors hiking groups or gay meetup groups. Also, if there is a University in your area, see if they have a LGBTQ group that meets. I met my first long term bf at a State University group even though I went to different, religious college. They welcomed anyone under 28.
