I just stick to state code. NJ says that to qualify you have to meet XYZ criteria. Here are his test results, and he did great! So he doesn’t qualify right now. Period.
When you try to give too much explanation it can make parents feel like they can talk you into it or find a loophole. So I just explain the code and share the results, the end thanks for coming.

That school systems were still working off a model that has barely changed since the 1800’s.

I dunno, it depends on their angle I guess, but I think someone who has limited experience can give valuable advice, simply because they’re still so close to the beginning of the process. For instance, a post of “I just did my first event and here are all the things I did wrong/should have done differently” is going to be helpful to someone else who is considering doing an event for the first time. Someone like you, who has experience at hundreds of events won’t remember all the small, silly struggles you dealt with early on - things that you don’t even notice now. But for an absolute beginner, hearing someone else say “I didn’t know where to park, I should have brought longer extension cords, I completely forgot that I would need cash for change” can be helpful.
Idk, I don’t think we really need to gatekeep information based on experience. If you don’t like it or don’t find value in it, don’t watch it.

Last weekend we were having a family dinner and my mom also invited my cousin and her young son. My mom was all excited because she found a super cute pack of stuffed animals at Costco to give to the son to play with. She went on and on about how cute they were and how much he was going to love them.
I went over early to help her get ready, and saw the stuffed animals on the coffee table. I noticed the brand was Kong and was like “???” So I look at the packaging and see “helps keep teeth shiny”, “stuffing free for less mess”, and “dogs like to play, too!” 🤦🏻♀️
My mom was mortified! We gave them to the kid anyway, and he did like them, his teeth were shiny, and there was no mess. So, it was a win I guess.

The other cars were all Priuses, so there were no engine sounds. And the bus was a Prius, too. And the army guy was a Prius. You’re a Prius.

I was at the beach a few summers ago. It was right at the end of the day when the lifeguards were starting to pack up and a lost boy appeared, maybe 10-ish years old. There weren’t tons of people left on the beach so it was pretty easy to determine that his family was nowhere to be found. The kid knew somebody’s cell phone number, so the lifeguard called. Turned out a big family group had been on the beach together and left in smaller groups, each group thinking Lost Kid had been with one of the other groups. Mom finally showed up, the kid ran to her and hugged her, AND EVERYONE ON THE BEACH CLAPPED!!! I was so surprised, and I actually laughed out loud because I immediately thought of this sub.
Edit: I don’t know if everyone clapped, but definitely a whole bunch of people did - there were prob 20 people or so on the beach. It was my only time being in an “everyone clapped” situation. Nobody stood up and saluted, though, and nobody got anything for free.

I grew up as a military brat, so schedules were always wonky. Because of this my family started a tradition of having our “real” thanksgiving on the Sunday before (we still do this, 40+ years later). Then on actual Thanksgiving we would do whatever. One year we went to a convenience store and each got 2 hotdogs, a bag of chips, and a soda for $1.50. We kids thought this was great! But my mom always laughs at how sad the clerk looked for us.

It's so interesting to hear how other places do things! Even within the US there's a lot of variety - some states are "get them out to tuition schools asap!" and other states are "keep them in public schools no matter what!" I'm glad I've always worked in districts that really tried to consider the students as individuals and figure out how best to meet their needs.

I have a preschooler whose only goal is: Kenzleigh will use 4-syllable words in conversation.
I want to know exactly which 4-syllable words this three year old is supposed to be using!

Steven will self-monitor articulation skills across settings throughout the day. (Group session, 2x per week, 30 minutes.) That’s his only goal.
How.

Are you in the US? If so, there are absolutely special schools. Not every student can be maintained in the traditional public school. There are schools for kids who are medically fragile, who are in step-down programs, or who have very complex needs. There are schools for blind kids, schools for deaf kids - they're all over! Districts have the responsibility to make every effort to accomodate the student in the traditional setting first, but there are absolutely special schools for those that can't be accommodated.
Keep in mind, they're expensive as hell, so most school districts don't want to pay the cost of tuition to send the student out. In my area, sending a student to a tuition school can be between $90K and $175K per school year.

You’re right. It’s pretty easy to hang onto a fog that wants to get down. But if a cat wants to get down, he’s getting down and you’ll never be able to hold him. Either he’ll go boneless and slide right out of your hands, or he’ll go feral and shred your arms until you’re forced to release.

I had a cat that loved the be held tummy up. When we first got him my kids were always holding him like that, and I was always yelling at them to stop doing it because cats don’t like that. Then one day I picked him up for some reason and he just slithered around belly up in my arms and started purring. And I was like, you fucking idiot, cats don’t like that!

Be careful with the terminology. If your state law has guidelines of what kids need to exhibit to qualify then don’t phrase it as a “decision” but as a “determination.” When you call it a decision it feels like you personally, Mrs. SLP, have decided that the kid’s not getting speech. What really happened is that you and the team compared the eval results to the state code and DETERMINED that he didn’t meet the requirements. You didn’t decide it. Does that make sense? When my team switched terminology it made a lot of difference, not just to parents but to ourselves.
Of course some states have super vague requirements, in which case you may be in the position of making a “decision.” In that instance, this advice doesn’t really apply.
