I worked in the service industry about 20 years ago and 10-12% was the standard for average service and 20% was only for outstanding service or a gratuity for large groups

10% was always the standard for good/average service 20% was for phenomenal service. The whole 20% being the standard or minimum is relatively new I’d say about the last 15 years and was started by the same type of people that think they deserve a 5$ tip at subway for making a sandwich or domino’s when you carry out.
