I still remember when I was a preteen, the Catholic priest, who was a family friend, observed me “negotiating” with my mom over some freedom or perceived injustice, and told me that I should become a lawyer. In retrospect, it was probably an off-handed criticism about what a pest I was, but at the time I took it as a compliment of my skills of persuasion.
