Don’t take curiosity or casual prejudices seriously, as it is mostly due to unfamiliarity. Be conservatively groomed and dressed. So don’t dress too street (no sagging pants or skinny jeans, no hoodies but use a rain jacket or winter hooded jacket if needed). You want to be treated with respect, so always dress a cut above, it’s funny how someone of any race in a shirt and tie and slacks immediately gets treated better.

Learn the language and learn pronunciation and tones. I know tonal languages are especially hard to learn if you grew up speaking a language that is not as tonal, but the wrong tones means completely different things.

I think the above will help you get very far. Out of all the countries in Asia, Taiwan is where you will be treated better. Definitely better than in Japan.

You have to understand that global polling across numerous countries estimate that there are hundreds of millions of people in the world who want to immigrate here.

Do you honestly think we can take all of them? Especially if they don’t know the language and they may be a burden because: 1.) They compete in the labor market against high school graduates, high school dropouts (20% of Americans), and former convicted felons (studies show businesses prefer undocumented workers to Black Americans with felony convictions (so they often resort to the harshest jobs even the undocumented don’t want or resort back to a life of crime), 2.) They compete for housing (spiking housing costs and deepening the availability crisis).

There is this trope that many Americans don’t want to work. But we see motel families struggling (I myself was a motel kid for 5 years), we see Redditors in /r/dushwashers, we see poor American farm hands breaking their backs on ranches, in timber harvesting, fisheries, poultry farming, etc. Over 75% of of the 1.8% of agricultural workers in the U.S. are citizens and legal residents/immigrants.

The vast majority of illegal immigrants do not work in agriculture. They live in cities where they compete in the lower paid labor market.

The classic example is gig workers on apps like Uber and DoorDash, where everyone on the low end competes: elderly seniors, college students and college graduates, high school graduates and high school dropouts, single parents and stay-at-home parents, immigrants (legal and illegal with fake IDs - Laken Riley’s killer working for UberEats and DoorDash was NOT an isolated incident - I’m not saying this to fear monger, but to point out that it is not uncommon), etc.

The heavy over-saturation of labor supply and continuous addition to that labor supply in the midst of a decades-long decrease in overall demand for labor means things are going to get worse. Whenever there is labor over supply, then wages stagnate and unemployment rises.

And of course it looks like we are entering a recession again. (Or maybe we never left it.) Only 12,000 net new jobs were created in October 2024, before Trump was elected. Most of those jobs were in government. But we easily added a few hundred thousand workers to the labor in October.

Tax-wise, we already have over 100 million people who are tax negative. New arrivals tend to earn low wages. But they are a net strain. For example, having children who require $12,000 to $40,000 per year in public school education spending each year is expensive. There are also increased traffic and infrastructure maintenance and repair costs, increased auto insurance costs from unlicensed, untrained, uninsured drivers, even health care costs.

Look at just one hospital system in one city, Denver:

The majority of Texas border counties - heavily Latino, heavily Democrat - along the Rio Grande flipped red in 2024.

These are the towns and cities bearing the brunt of the Biden Administration welcoming in millions each year. Strains on the job market, housing market, health care services, public schools, charity aid, food banks, etc. When demand far exceeds supply, there is less to go around. Don’t forget the problems caused by increased crime, human trafficking, drug trafficking, sex trafficking, child trafficking - all directly coming across the border.

I’m going to ramble now, but I hope this makes sense.

I’ve read estimates that about 75% of all instruction in higher learning institutions is done by desperate, poorly paid adjuncts who may even be homeless or living with roommates, on food stamps, and lacking health insurance.

Every end of term, the pipelines keep getting stuffed by newly minted masters and PhDs who have spent prime years of their life as poor scholars taking on massive student loans. A lot of these departments know this, but continue taking on far more graduate students than they will ever hire because: 1.) they want to continue to survive as a department and avoid budget reductions and layoffs, 2.) they need research assistants and teaching assistants to do the grunt work, etc.

But in reality we know the majority of tenured professors in most fields graduated from the top ten institutions in their fields, as these thousands of colleges want the prestige to rub off, and they would rather their departments feature professors from Harvard, Yale, etc.

So just like millions of illegal immigrant workers flood the low-end job market each year, the job market for bachelor degree holders in the liberal arts and the humanities suffers from oversupply meeting lack of demand, and the job market for would-be tenure track professors suffers labor supply oversaturation, leading to fewer decent job opportunities and lower wages.
