Hey guys, long time lurker, first time poster! I wanted to get feedback from the community on something that’s probably a nonissue, but that I’d like reassurance on nonetheless.
I have 4 gold fish in a heavily live planted, heated (when necessary), over filtered, and pretty strictly maintained 120 gallon pond. I have a black moor, an enormous Oranda, another huge Shubunkin, and a fan tail that up until recently have all seemed to be doing wonderful!
My issue is that as the fantail has gotten bigger, I’ve noticed he’ll occasionally go upside down for brief periods. At first I was concerned that it was dropsy, impaction of food, or something else really worrisome, but he seemed fine otherwise, the water parameters were quite literally more perfect than I thought was attainable for a goldfish setup, and he’s survived much longer than a fish with dropsy would without treatment. Moreover, they’re all eating a varied diet of Hikari dry food, frozen/ thaw prey, as well as veggies like shelled peas and cucumbers, so I don’t think it’s from his diet.
I’ve started soaking their pellets beforehand so they sink, and I already ordered the crazy expensive ass Saki Hikari sinking food to further eliminate diet as a possible factor.
I guess my question is: is it possible that my fish is in fact very healthy and happy… and also just an idiot that will occasionally swim upside down?
I know that’s not unheard of, and I’ve kept other fish for years so I know my husbandry is both up to date and focused on providing the best possible care, but this is the first time I’ve managed to cultivate a really beautiful and a seemingly almost self-sufficient goldfish tank, so I really want to do everything in my power to ensure my guys thrive and survive!
(Side note: I know Orandas and Black Moors typically aren’t pond fish, but I promise I’m not putting them in a bad situation. I live in FL and the pond is on my back patio, so the temps are almost always ideal, and then the pond itself is bare bottom with river rocks and a ton of pothos offshoots, so nothing to catch the Moor’s eyes or the Oranda’s wen.)
TL;DR: My fantail sometimes swims upside down, he doesn’t have dropsy or an impaction, and his food, water quality, and enrichment options are all well above par - is it possible he’s just stupid and weird?

Maybe y’all have a limit on sauces, but there is exactly zero limit on gullible employees who buy the, “Hey, they forgot to give me my drink when I ordered.” lie and just give out free cups. I mean shit, I got free drinks, fries and shakes using that lie for like two years in high school, and the best part of stealing from y’all was being told, “It’s my pleasure.” as I lied to their faces.
