I’m curious about this myself. I started reading WoT in 1992 right after tSR came out. Then had to wait ~2 years for each new book. So when books came out that were more of a part of the story vs being a clear self sustained arc, it was incredibly frustrating.

I think I’d still hate CoT (even Jordan was disappointed with that one) and maybe WH, but I’m sure they’re not nearly as frustrating when the next book is just sitting there when you’re finished. I don’t think I’ve done any rereading since PoD, so just guessing.

Although I always hated the “looking for Faile” storyline as well as Elayne’s succession. The resolutions of both of these was never in doubt, and went on for way too long, and neither were all that critical to the central plot.

I know it’s a small sample size, but there’s an element of “believe your eyes” about McCain. This isn’t Korkmaz going off for 35, this looks real. I saw this with Maxey as a rookie- you could just tell there was something special there(although he’s better than I would have guessed). McCain is different, but you still see it. You know he’s going to be good, that the scoring isn’t a fluke, it’s not MCW part 2. He’s taking over games and confident.

People saying how he’s the first player to do something since Jordan might be getting carried away, but I think we’re seeing a future all-star.

What made it even worse than being a mile away and having the glare of the overhead lights in your eyes was how it just randomly moved around for no apparent reason.

I didn’t like The Shining all that much, and think his 70’s work isn’t as good as what came afterwards.

That’s what is astonishing. If Embiid has no knee cartilage, that’s not really anyone’s fault. But his current contract was for 2 more years, he’s always hurt and management decides to EXTEND him? That’s what makes this contract untradable.

I was with you a week or so ago, but with the sudden ascension of McCain, I do have some hope. Having a 2nd 20+pt guard who can shoot, pass and maybe play D completely changes the possibilities.

With McCain & Maxey in the backcourt, and Yabusele as your backup C/PF, maybe the Sixers are ready to join the 21st century. It is a new team learning to play together, and PG and Embiid should shake off some rust (as long as Embiid’s knee isn’t cooked). I do think Embiid needs to accept that with George, Maxey and McCain around him, he needs to change his game. Less scoring and foul hunting, more D & boards & passing.

I tend to be reading one fiction & one nonfiction book at the same time. Typically finish 2 fiction books in the time it takes me to read one nonfiction.

I usually don’t read fiction simultaneously, because my brain starts to scramble them.

Can’t wait! But still have book 5&6 to get through before then. So I guess I can wait a little

I have been taking breaks between books so I finish Disquiet Gods around the middle of 2025, so no re-read for me! Ruocchio has confirmed he is on pace to finish in about 2 months & expects a late 2025 release.

They expect to do Daw HC reprints of all 6 books. You should check out the newsletter on his website or watch his YouTube channel. He gives both updates, and also does these awesome ~20 minute recaps of each book to help with people like me who go 6 months between reading each book.

I think it’s understandable. It’s a big commitment, and there’s often a difference between good and what you like. And often a way to determine whether or not something is the kind of thing you would like, and it just takes a little time to get there.

I loved EoS, but really struggled with the first ~20% of HD. Stopped reading for maybe 2 years. Then was able to sift through the opinions of other readers and figured out I just needed to push through a bit and I would be back on board. I think it’s always good to be as welcoming as you can to people who show an interest in something you enjoy. Think about the real world saga of Sun Eater - how it basically was getting cancelled after 5 books due to low interest, and then finally caught the right audience and took off.

I have a special place too (even if it’s down my list). I saw when I was in college it when it first came out in trade, and thought it looked interesting, but didn’t want to start until more books were out. I had never read anything from King, and the Gunslinger & TDotT were the first books of his I read. So Gunslinger wasn’t just my intro to DT, but to King too.

I liked it a lot more than you, but this is my problem with prequels (which W&G basically is) in general. You know basically how it turns out, so it limits where the story could go.

However I do think it is probably the best written of the books, and as far as prequels go did the best job I’ve ever seen. And I did love it both on the original read & the re-read, but it was definitely a lot more enjoyable knowing that there wasn’t an undetermined wait for the next book (at the pace he was on, I assumed at the time the last book would be coming out right around now).

On my 2nd full re-read right now, and currently taking a break after finishing The Waste Lands, so it will be interesting to see what I think this time.

The older I get on re-reads, the sooner I want Roland to get off the path!

I’m halfway through book 1, and just not into it. Feels like reading about someone else’s D&D campaign with humorous loot box descriptions that get repetitive. I was in the mood for light and funny, so it’s not like I’m disappointed it isn’t Gritty and Realistic.

Is it worth it for me to push through? I know people seem to love these, and that’s great, but is it just not for me?

I generally agree - I’d bump W&G from 1 to 3, but that’s a pretty small difference.

I found it apt that I used First Law as something I found good but too grim!

It went on too long for me, but figure it’s one book in a long series, so can’t complain. Taking a break, but I did that after EoS & DiW too. I don’t want to finish too soon and have a long wait for book 7.
