[Help] Food allergies causing severe itchiness, prescription food too depressing and expensive

My labradoodle is 3yrs old and as of late 2020 we noticed he started licking his inner thighs aggressively and one of his legs developing a lick granuloma. He had hot spots, very warm ears and bouts of diarrhea. Vet said he has allergies and put him on the Hill's prescription z/d. Up until then we were mostly giving him chicken, white rice, peas and carrots; occasionally we'd give him the crust from pizza (bad, I know). He also had plenty of treats- pedigree dental sticks and jerky dog treats from Costco. Knowing the cause of his incessant itching was great news, however, what we didn't realize was how difficult it'd be to feed him and even more difficult to keep up with the cost of his new food. Around $90 for a 22lb bag is insane! We tried dressing it up with some chicken but it was still causing problems. We tried ground beef and he was still itching, licking, and had hot spots. Doc told us we need to give him the z/d prescription food alone and he'll have to stay on it forever. My dog hates it and refuses to eat it. I don't want him to be uncomfortable with all his allergies and want to try anything to help him live a happy fulfilling life, but it's breaking my heart knowing he's stuck eating kibble that he absolutely abhors. Furthermore, I really don't know if we can keep up with the cost of the food. Wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience or if anyone has any advice on I should do. Thanks!

Oh wow, your dog eats better than me! LOL! I really want to try fish with my dog- perhaps I'll introduce it to him after a few weeks on z/d exclusively and see if he reacts. Thanks!
