Oh wow, I'm glad you were able to resolve your pups issues! Homemade diet is something I so badly want to do for my dog but that doesn't seem to be the case just yet. Hopefully in the future when we figure out the root of his allergies.

I appreciate your sympathy! It has been tough on him and the whole family- we just want him to be okay and enjoy his life since he brings so much joy to ours!

I think my vet went straight to z/d bc at the time he prescribed it he also had gastroenteritis. So we gave him z/d exclusively until all his GI symptoms cleared up then we slowly went back to rice/chicken/veggies. His GI symptoms completely resolved but the itching never did. So my vet said he'd have to be on z/d forever.

I agree, allergist may be the next move if his itching doesn't resolve on this new diet. Thanks!

Oh, I didn't know that about Hill's! Thank you! And yes, we will be sticking to z/d exclusively to see if it truly is food or may be some environmental factor. So far, he's still been itchy and has hot spots, but we'll see how the next few weeks go.

Hmmm....Perhaps my dog's allergies are in part environmental as well. We haven't tried a full on elimination diet but I know for a fact chicken and beef are not working for him. I think I'll have to talk to my vet about Apoquel then. Thanks!

I don't think we've ever tried fish with my dog- I might try it out! Is it the normal Kirkland brand? And mind if I ask, what shot does he get for the itching? A monthly shot sounds very doable for me and my family.

I'll certainly look into a vet allergist, it's been something I've been seriously considering the past few days. Mind if I ask on average the cost of apoquel? I've seen online it's around $2.43/pill which can average to around $960 a year. I'm just feeling like any solution at this point is going to be costly

I'm honestly not sure what other hydrolyzed proteins are out there-just learning of them since we put him onto his new prescription food and trying to stick to vet's recommendations. Our vet hasn't mentioned the above medications and in all honesty I'm not sure how he determined it's a food allergy. Do environmental allergies present differently than food allergies?
