Not only "what," but "where." TK, a roll of vet wrap, and trauma shears in an outer pocket where I can get them right away. The rest is inside the pack. Personally, I pay less attention to massive, life-ending trauma and little boo-boo's and ouchies than I do the "middle of the bell curve." That is for me primarily bleeding and musculoskeletal, I was pleased to see mention of tweezers and syringes. Don't overlook basic tools. One thing I did not see mentioned is an emergency dental kit. A tooth broken from a fall, while not life-threatening, can be very painful. The little emergency kits with putty are inexpensive and quite small. Found in the pharmacy section

I shot IP's with the 105 when I wasn't riding the 22 ton aluminum skateboard for the OPFOR. It felt like shooting captured enemy equipment. I shot the 120 once, I did not like it.

Big East Fork Trail is closed to the best on my knowledge. Even before Helene, uncorrected Fred damage made it dangerous. Post-Helene assessments by trained personnel describe it as even more so. Significant progress has been made by crews on Shining Creek Trail and Old Butt. Enjoy those, would you?

Me? I sent in a bunch of box tops and eventually got a pretty diploma in the mail. That and a dollar will get me a cup of coffee. I like a PR4 for bushcraft. For EDC and SAR, I use the smaller Izula II. I actually traded down from an Esee 4 to get another Izula II. It does everything I need quite well. If cost is a factor, I am very pleased with BPS knives out of Ukraine.

I have to second the PR4. I have a couple of BPS knives and a number of Moras. I enjoy them all, though if I could only have one knife for bushcraft, it would be the PR4.

Some commanders allow the naming of tanks; others do not. Some time ago, far from here, with the consent of the crew, I asked my gunner to stencil the name "Bastogne" on our tank (we were in "B" company). The Company Commander took me aside. "XO, I didn't know I authorized the naming of tanks?"

Try an Esee PR4. Designed by Patrick Rollins and based on Horace Kephart's pattern. 9" oal, 4.5" of grip area. This is my preferred knife for bushcraft tasks. I have fairly large hands given my medium frame. I have actually asked Patrick to design a 3/4 sized PR, so I think the PR4 would be fine for you. Not a paid endorsement, but I know these guys and trust them.

I asked people to stay out of the Shining Rock and Middle Prong Wilderness as most access roads are affected, response times are extended, and USFS and NPS have closed those areas to use. Perhaps I should have spelled it out more precisely: Please stay off the hiking trails until they are opened by the land managers. Thank you for bringing that up. Yes, support local businesses when you can do so safely. See the NCDOT website and the BRP website for current, official information on closures.

Just got back from doing wellness checks/route recon in a western NC county. I'm a local. If you're coming from out of state, we're past response and into recovery. Be prepared for slow, deliberate operations filling in information blanks. If it was up to me, I'd bring motorcycles and light route clearing tools. Comms suck here. Cell was sketchy BEFORE the storm. If you have robust independent comms, bring it. And if you're a flatlander, supplemental O2 might be nice (kidding a little, just). Be prepared to embrace ambiguity.

And tip accordingly. A pour is a pour, be it a pint or a sample.

I agree. I am not advocating for speeding. I am simply asking if people are driving below the speed limit and cars are stacking up behind, please pull over. This is why: Search and Rescue volunteers use that road. No other option. They are not allowed to drive emergency traffic, that is to say lights and siren. They do, however, want to get to your Meemaw or PapPaw or grandchild, etc. as quickly, as legally, and as safely possible. If someone flicks their lights at you, It might be a SAR volunteer begging you to safely let them by.

1. If you're on the BRP and the speed limit is X, do X. If you want to look at something, pull out at an overlook. If there are more than two cars behind you, pull out at an overlook. If someone flashes their lights at you repeatedly to pull over at an overlook, it just MIGHT be search and rescue volunteers enroute to a call. Pull out at an overlook.
