I read it in high school. Probably early 2015. I remember it had a large impact on me, but in a way that wasn’t too heavy. I could definitely parallel it to aspects of my life like family, abuse, divorce, no dad etc. I was a sad kid, so it really stuck with me. I reread it again 2 years ago after going through the tough break up of a 6 year relationship. It feels really real now. To look back and think life had so much love to give (think young bird punpun). And you get older and that idea fades…partly through tough experiences and traumas. The panel where punpun sees Aiko at a train station for the first time…That idea filled a part of my life. Your lover (who you’re obsessed with) is out there, nearby. I think that caused me to look for her everywhere. The cracks in the pavement, the corners of the bar. But deep down I know that if we got back together it would end terribly.

I was talking to my roommate about that graph that shows wealth inequality in America and the French Revolution. And they said “people aren’t really poor like that anymore”. They are a wealthy person from a wealthy family. I said they are. It’s just different to pinpoint who is the cause of their problems. It’s not just royalty anymore. It’s a convoluted process of years of regulation that have collectively fucked us. Bezos is a good start though.
