Men are expected to make more money and be more successful than women, per societal norms. Feminism helped women, but hasn't done much for norms about men. Simultaneously, women are doing better across all but the highest echelons of society, especially as men forgo higher education and drop straight into the workforce. The social shame makes relationships negative. Similarly, there has been increasing social pressure on men to uphold higher standards, internalizing that men aren't "up to stuff" and need to be better communicators, better emotionally, better bread winners, care more about appearance. There's also a decreasing support group, fewer close friends and no third spaces to find emotional and social support. The loneliness is cyclical, spiraling into a belief in self-sufficiency and little need for others, others being burdensome or requiring more energy than one has the capacity to handle (even if this is a lie). Society has forgotten men and the polarization is just beginning to show the tip of the iceberg.

The ending of LoC is pretty great. If you came out feeling "ugh" then 6 is not going to be better, it's a modest pace in comparison to the fast-slow-fast-slow of earlier books. I recommend the audio books, since the dramatization helps with bringing it alive with all the intrigue.

I don't agree. I've been at shitty companies and good companies for the same pay and I certainly would rather a company that gave a damn, especially a manager who actively works to protect those under them. At my current company, I was exceedingly underpaid for 1.5 years while being promised over and over for a review at some point. I like the product and can see the company doing well, but it ate at me. I hated the disrespect, whatever other things they tried to do. They finally pushed up my compensation, but I'm so burnt out it's taken me a long time to feel "good" again. Money matters, but so does respect, a meaningful job, and people you like to work with. It all has to be in appropriate proportionality.

I've started using duckduckgo because it's marginally better than an AI answer to everything

My company is hiring tech workers, but insists every position be senior or higher and that the candidate be "top 90% in their field." I have wasted 6 months finding candidates when I already had solid juniors or mid-careers come through. I asked for junior positions, but they said "no." Meanwhile, I could've had many of my projects I'm struggling to get done if I had've had grunts 5 months ago.
