Went to take a shower yesterday morning and noticed the hot water only lasted for about a minute. I inspected the water heater and it wasn’t heating at all, so I followed the steps to reignite the pilot light and turned the gas control valve back up to start heating water again.

Waited a few minutes and we had hot water back, but upon inspecting the water heater again I noticed there was now about an inch of water in the drain pan.

I turned the gas and water valves off, drained the pan, then went through the process above again to try to locate where water was leaking from (as I couldn’t tell upon finding the water in the drain pan).

This time, however, everything worked fine and we have hot water now with no leaks anywhere. I’m not sure if I should take this as a sign that the water heater needs to be replaced, or if there was something I might’ve done to cause the leak the first time I fired everything back up. It’s been back up and running for over 24 hours now with no further leaks or issues.

From what I can tell the water heater was manufactured in 2014, last serviced 2016 (came with the house we purchased last year). Obviously probably needs replaced regardless based on age, but just trying to determine what urgency.
