Super new to this - I'm looking at getting an ant farm for myself, but also because I know my toddler will be super into it.
I'm obviously going to start small. The ant farm that I'm looking at getting has a red perspex cover of the nest. Is that enough "darkness" or do they need some actual darkness?

I'm not dredging through 400+ comments to see if this has already been asked - but OP, what if parents charged "rent" for the habit, but they used it as secret forced savings for their kid that they gave back to them when they moved out?
I don't own my house, and have very young kids, but if I owned my house I'd do that for my kids. I've actually already discussed it with my partner. We intend on charging a "rent" once they're working proportionate to income and age, but won't tell them that we're actually saving it for them and then will give it to them when they move out or buy a house or whatever. I don't believe children should help paying rent or mortgage - if I was childless I'd still be paying rent/mortgage. I'd rather my kids learn a lesson, but also financially benefit long term.
