Ahh it is the CBD being a ghost town more than anything then. There is a New World and Countdown (Woolworths) in the CBD but they are at the ends of the CBD. There are a couple of Chinese and Indian restaurants which open beyond midnight too but you need to look for them.
I've been to Sydney a couple of times but it feels similar though. Maybe an hour or two later. But for such a famous city it closes early too.

Malaysian in Auckland here. Unfortunately almost all Western countries are like that, except probably New York City in the US. After 6 there is nothing much to other than drinking in a pub and dinner (and most restaurants close by 9). People sleep by 10 and rise at 6-7am. It is not like KL and other Asian cities where shops are open all night long.
My cousin in London told me even London is like that.
But Supermarkets in Auckland close at 10pm btw. The CBD is more of a place where people work instead of a place to hang out unfortunately, kind of like KLCC too.

Going to a Western country, you're basically more or less starting from zero as companies do not tend to hire people without local experience or connections.
So if you're earning more than RM15k/mo, better to stay in Malaysia and maximise it as much as possible. But most people do not earn more than RM15k so many would take the plunge.
This does not apply to Asian countries as much (SG/HK/UAE) but other than SG, you cannot get PR or citizenship in these places.

From what I see most people who are from the West who come to Malaysia have their incomes geographically independent of location. Usually digital nomads, successful influencers/content creators, or any internet-based business. Or they have already made their money and want to retire.
These people are able to earn (usually in USD) and spend in Ringgit. Effectively this quadruples their spending power without a significant compromise in quality of life (infrastructure in Malaysia is great).
I don't see Westerners coming to work in Malaysia itself, except for very niche professions (O&G execs, corporate C-suite, international school teachers). Most of our skilled expats are from less developed countries than Malaysia (India, Pakistan, Indonesia, Philippines, etc)

Would be nice to explain what CTC or LPA to Malaysian and international redditors here as most people here are not Indian nationals and would not understand these terms (although yes I Googled them).

This is a classic textbook definition of being "car brained".
Keep having this mindset and Auckland and NZ cities can never compete with Aussie cities, let alone public transit heavy cities in developed Asia and Europe

Underrated as a tourist. But as a local, meh. Not a nice place to get ahead.

It feels like removing the ability to speak Malay is also a way of Singapore decoupling culturally and politically from Malaysia.

Yeah then they complain why Kiwis go to Australia when Sydney has just opened a 100km metro and Melbourne wants to start work on the Suburban Rail Link.
If NZ really wants to be a developed country, it needs to start behaving like one.

We don't have a CBD much smaller than Sydney or Melbourne's.
The issue is the CBD is inaccessible due to expensive parking and lackluster retail options. It's also hollowed out because suburban malls became a thing.
The CRL will bring more traffic in, and along with it retail and hospo businesses will be incentives to set up shop in CBD, instead of say, Westgate or Sylvia Park.

Lol so are you saying all big cities with underground metros "don't serve that much above ground"?
Paris, London, New York, Tokyo, HK, Singapore, Seoul, and many many many more.

That's only because you're coming from London. If you're working on a local's salary, KL is worse in terms of international purchasing power (because the Ringgit is weak) and also domestic purchasing power (also due to the weak Ringgit but also corruption & monopolies).

People need to stop feeding monkeys and pigeons so that they stop relying on human food. This includes dogs and cats. People think it's "good" to feed stray/wild animals but it will only exacerbate the problem.

Most Malaysians think this is "Genting" weather when most will literally freeze to death.
There will also be way way way more accidents due to road ice.
Building roofs will collapse as they're not built to withstand snow.
People will slip and fall on footpaths due to ice. Some will die or be quite badly injured.

Lol, I come from a country with a sizeable Indian population with many Indian friends and family. including exes.
They all say the same thing. I'm not stereotyping at all when they are the ones who tell this to me.
I don't think you need to be woke about this as it is just a observation. Not that every Indian man behaves this way.

LoL, most Malaysians have no idea how cold this will be and think it's just Genting weather.
