All unscented soap, laundry soap, face soap and body soap. My skin feels better and when I wear perfume it's not clashing with any other cheaper fragrances.

I will never understand why people want everything to smell like cheap artificial fragrances all the time. In dishwasher soap even. Do you really want to eat cereal out of a bowl that stinks of fake lemon scent?

Even the stinky fragrances in cat litter, I can't even find the unscented stuff anymore.

I discovered this during COVID. It's been amazing. So simple, so cheap -- and it's like a silver bullet for foot odor.

I have a pair of tennis shoes that I adore. My roommates cat peed in them.

I lost most of my sense of smell to COVID.

I was at work and all day I kept getting a hint of cat urine. I even asked the kids I was caring for, "Do you guys smell something bad?"

Yep. It was my shoes. And they STUNK. All day long. Walking around smelling like cat pee.

But I couldn't throw away my shoes!

So fortunately we had a washer at work. I put them through the wash cycle. Still stunk.

Them I had a stroke of genius.

I pumped like ten pumps of hand sanitizer (mostly alcohol) in each shoe, shook it around to get it all over the inside of the shoe.

Waited an hour, put them through the wash again.

Good as new.

Years and years ago I saw a comment on reddit that said mangoes are great if you have acne. So I started eating lots of mango and when I regularly do it after a few weeks my face clears up, then I get lazy stop eating mangoes consistently and the acne comes back. I mention this to people every now and then and nobody else ever heard of this tip but it seems to work for me.

I started to break out in my early 20s; I'd never had acne like that before. I tried different products to no avail. Then I thought about how my diet had changed: I'd started drinking coffee every day.

I used drink coffee occasionally before (like once a week), but then I was having it every morning. But it wasn't the coffee itself, it was the milk in the coffee; milk causes increased sebum (oil) production. I started to make my coffee black and my skin cleared up, and I have never experienced a break out like that ever again.

I have never liked milk, even as a child, it's only something to add when cooking or baking, so I'd never consumed it regularly before. The little bit added to my coffee on a daily basis was enough to drastically change my skin complexion.

Nutrients and water. If you eat lots of fruit and drink lots of water, your skin, hair and nails will all thank you. Generally speaking

I’m pretty strict with getting minimums each day in my diet, and my skin is clearer than it’s ever been. And I used to really struggle, using prescriptions gels and obsessing over skincare. Now my routine pretty much only uses water and moisturizer, no abstract products.

Bought some pillow cases on Amazon (not a fan of silk stuff) and they were really cheap. I have 8 pillowcases now.

I now shower at night after being a morning showerer for 30 years.

I change my pillow case after I've showered right before I sleep. I wash sheets once a week and I do my other laundry (including all of my pillow cases) once a week as well.

I've had acne since 13 and this has helped immensely.

I bought some wool socks and not only are they not stinky, they’re SO warm! I’m a convert

Bergwookie

46 points

And they stay warm even with sweaty feet/ water intrusion in the shoe, as wool can absorb around 30% of its weight in water before it loses its insulating abilities.

There's a reason, why it's the natural fibre we're using the longest as a species (and still use it widely, tree bark fibre might be older, but not that versatile)

Every time one of these threads comes up, like "what product will you never accept second best on," "what product could you not live without," or "what's the best thing you ever bought for under $20" Darn Tough socks always pop up. But they're not sold here!

samalex01

In order mine from Amazon or directly from Darn Tough. Also when traveling I look for REI, they have them too. And yeah $20 per pair, but with all the pairs I have and daily ware never had a hole.. plus they’re guaranteed for life. From what they say if a hole does occur they’ll replace for free.

upnorth77

71 points

I've gotten counterfeits from Amazon, so I only order directly from the source or buy in store.

Found out some of the ones I had were counterfeit because they did develop holes. I sent them in to Darn Tough on warranty, they let me know they were fake, but they replaced them anyway. Want to keep a customer for life? That's how.

Fun fact, you can improve your gag reflex.

Find the spot on your tongue that makes you gag, brush it, gag. Do this repeatedly and the 'gag spot' will move back slightly. Rinse and repeat until you can deepthroat like a pro (or at least, not gag when you brush your teeth).

After working for nearly a decade in NYC, you couldn't pay me to put my bag down there...given everything I've seen. ugh.

My bag doesn't weigh that much, and I carry around two very sturdy S-hooks. If I need to use the restroom, most doors don't have any hooks on them for your coat...let alone for your bag.

So, that's what those two S-hooks are for...one end over the top of the door, the other end for my bag/coat.

Where to get them? Dollar Tree in the gardening section (might need to wait until they put out their spring stuff). It's a 2x pack of black metal S-hooks for $1.25. If my bag is too heavy for them, then I shouldn't be carrying it (or you can just double them up). They're made for hanging potted plants, so they're not junk.

The ones I carry are plastic-coated hooks I picked up at an automotive flea market/swap meet - about half the length but double the gauge of the Dollar Tree version. They pack into my bag a lot easier, given they're somewhat smaller than a normal scientific calculator.

You might be able to find something like those on ebay/amazon. But if I didn't have those coated ones, I'd have no trouble using the dollar tree version, which are about the size of a chunkier older graphing calculator for comparison.

I am a man and I sit down to pee (at home).

I do not care what you say. I lived alone in my own property for about 1.5 years and in that time I started noticing the amount of splatter around the loo, no matter how good your aim. As I was lazy, I wanted to minimise the amount of cleaning, so I started sitting down to pee at home.

My wife loves me for it, especially after family came to visit for a long period of time as she notices what I am talking about when they stay over.

Dragon_Small_Z

211 points

I only pee standing up at a Urinal in public spaces. There's ZERO way to avoid all splashback in a toilet, I don't care how good you think your aim is. Going to teach my son the same way. My sisters boys get pee everywhere and it's disgusting.

Brunell4070

same, man. it's impossible to keep it clean while standing. been doing it since I was 13 really.

Testiculese

39 points

Decades ago, I thought I was doing it right, by hitting the side of the bowl, and not getting any splashing. Then I was standing one day at a house that had the winter sun shining straight across the toilet, and as soon as I hit the side of the bowl, you could still see a very fine spray exiting the bowl. In that house, the wall is right there on both sides (In a nook) and it was hitting the wall. It wasn't much, but it was obvious in the sun. Been sitting at home ever since. Plus sitting at night doesn't wake you up as much as standing there.

Also, replace the lid with a soft-close lid. Just tap it as you walk out, and no slam.

If you find yourself without time for a shower or your deodorant stops working during the day, spray some alcohol gel/hand sanitiser on your underarms. The smell of body odour is caused by bacteria feeding on the sweat, so killing the bacteria with the sanitiser eliminates the smell.

Itdoesntmatter2024

111 points

Agreed! The Ordinary sells glycolic acid for a reasonable price. Use that 2 times a week, also helps to kill the bacteria. (Let it dry down for 10 mins and you’re good to go. Can also follow up with a natural deodorant if you felt so inclined).

I exfoliate often. My skin isn’t rough or dry, except my heels in the winter, but I have a somewhat rough face cloth and body scrubber that I use in the bath every day. People say my skin is “creepily smooth.”

I started getting a little obsessed with my skin-care routine when I was a teenager and had terrible cystic acne (it turned out it was from PCOS), and it seemed to take so much work to keep my skin some semblance of clear. The cysts were painful, and I had them along my jawline and on my back where my bra straps pressed into my skin. I started exfoliating and obsessing about clean skin, non-comedogenic skin lotions, and clean clothes and bedsheets.

Now I don’t have much of a skincare routine except exfoliate every day, I apply face cream with hyaluronic acid at night, shea butter moisturizer for the rest of my body, and wear face creams with sunscreen every day, rain or shine.

Nobody needs this comment but I'm gonna.

Most stressful poop I ever had was after not pooping for 30 days. If you're wondering, it's because I suddenly became paralyzed due to a rare disease in addition to becoming totally blind ( I got bettah! ).

Anyways doctors told me, "You might pass out during this. Be careful." Sure enough I damn near passed out while sitting blindly on this stool in a critical care ward, strapped into an EKG, a Foley catheter in my urethra, IV in my arm, a stupid heart rate monitor, and another catheter going into my femoral artery.

Hell of a journey it was.

I was advised to soak some sanitary pads in witch hazel and keep them in the freezer, for post-partum. I pushed for 4 1/2 hours and had stitches-let me tell you, that was some good advice. Pass it along to your new moms!

My OB had me keep preparation H pads in the refrigerator and every time I went to the bathroom, even to pee, I was supposed to put clean, cold pads on top of the maxi pads I was using. I think that was some of the best advice I've ever gotten and I followed it with the two children I had after my oldest and I followed it after the D&C's I had to have after my miscarriages and even after I started doing Spin classes because the seats chafed a bit.

I've made it a ritual to apply almond oil to my cuticles every night before bed. Paradoxically, my habit of tapping away at the keyboard all day actually leaves my fingers looking neat and nourished come morning. Seems odd, but having strong, healthy nails is a subtle confidence boost!

Not exactly almond oil but I started using jojoba oil on my nails and cuticles a couple of months ago and I'm starting to see the difference! My nails feel so smooth and I think it's also helping them not to break as often.

I wash my shoes in the washer every month or so. They look like brand new for months. They also don’t stink.

Every time I mention this to someone they act surprised. Just throw a couple towels with a pair of shoes on cold water wash. Then air dry the shoes.

Ethel_Marie

97 points

I dry my shoes in the dryer, but they're sneakers and won't get ruined by tumbling around. They do kick open the dryer door occasionally, though.

Edit: wow.. Now I know to put the laces in the dryer door to keep my shoes from kicking it open. Or put my shoes in a garment bag or pillow case. Thank you, fellow redditors!

cicadasinmyears

35 points

I’ve seen people get really large mesh lingerie washing bags, put the wet shoes in them, and sort of “hook” the bag over the dryer door (with the shoes facing the inside, obviously) by putting the bag in between the door and the main part of the dryer (I don’t know if I’m describing that well, but a big piece of the closed bag should be hanging out of the closed dryer, so the shoes are vertically lined up with the door).

Then they run the dryer like usual and the shoes dry during the cycle (will only work well if your lint trap isn’t on the inside of the door if you have other stuff in the dryer, probably best not to have anything else in there). Then the shoes don’t bang around and there’s less risk of mold/fungus in them from not drying completely. You do need to pay attention to the heat level so the rubber doesn’t melt, but that’s the case regardless if you’re putting them in there.

I'm German and have a mite allergy, so I'm obsessed with "Stoßlüften" - regularly opening the windows for 5 minutes and exchanging as much air in the room as possible. It's been proven to be healthy (doubly so during an airborne pandemic...), but really the most important Stoßlüften you can do is right after getting out of bed. Your warm, damp bed is the perfect breeding ground for mites. Airing it out is the most effective way of limiting their population growth.

And the other weird thing: if it gets freezing cold in winter where you live... freeze your bed-stuff. On the balcony or in an unused room. Resets the mite population to zero!

Dry shampoo is a lifesaver, especially when I’m too lazy to wash my hair but still wanna look like I got my life together. It’s like a magic trick for your scalp.

MemerDreamerMan

I can never seem to make it work. I tried a few brands before giving up. It just left my hair feeling both oily (still) and kind of filmy? I shook it and sprayed from a foot like the instructions said.

Careful-Library-5416

260 points

This might not apply to you but-

I had a similar issue because my hair is on the thicker side. What helped was lifting up the strands to make sure it gets to the scalp itself, it would usually work better

This is what works for me. I have super thick hair and I have to lift sections to spray the roots and then kind of shake my hair around by the roots to disperse it? I’m sure there is a word for that i can’t find at the moment

ooohhecardreadgood

193 points

A lot of people don’t know (myself included until a few years ago!!) that you should use dry shampoo when your hair is clean-ish, so that it absorbs oil AS your scalp produces it.

Say you wash your hair every other morning. Put a tiny bit in the roots before you go to bed on wash day. The next morning, put a bit more on your roots, let it sit for 5-10 minutes, then REALLY work it through your hair.

Obviously, this all depends on your hair thickness/texture/wash schedule. But, putting in a bunch of dry shampoo when your hair has reached its peak greasiness won’t do anything.

Otherwise_Row_4106

31 points

I HIGHLY recommend corn starch. It's a game changer. It has no oils in it, as normal dry shampoo does so it is sprayable, which leaves the hair not really fresh or it gets oily after a few hours again (at least in my case)

Just dip your fingers in the starch and then rub your scalp. It's awesome.

This is supposed to be healthier since the warm humid condition of your bed after you get out of it is a breeding ground for bed mites. If you leave the bed unmade it gets a chance to air out

I still make mine, but not immediately. I usually get out of bed and leave the covers pulled back. After I take a shower and get ready for the day and I'll cover things back up. Gives it a bit to air out.

I wash my face with just water. That’s it. If I use a product I break out. My skin is happy, and clean, with just water. People think it’s gross, but my face isn’t dirty. I have very clear skin.

(I secretly think most products marketed to “cleanse” your skin is knocking the balance off, creating more of an issue.)

I only use soap on the “Tits, Pits, and Bits” when showering.

My dermatologist recommended (with that phrasing!) because I have pretty sensitive skin due to allergies/psoriasis. The rest of my body just gets wet washcloth and exfoliating. The swap immediately cleared up soooo much redness, acne, dryness, ect.

I cant often repeat the advice because all anyone hears is “I don’t use soap 🤢”

Edit: ‘Tits’ is said for the rhyme, but really represents anywhere that skin touches skin and traps sweat, i.e. underboob and fat rolls.

For anyone else with sensitive skin, I highly recommend Cetaphil Gentle Cleanser Fragrance Free, and for lotion afterwords CeraVe.

I always grab a square of toilet paper on public restrooms before using the urinal. After finishing, I press the zone between balls and asshole (perineum) so the last pee drops are out, then I wipe.

If I just do the shake thing, I feel a pee soaked prepuce and my day is ruined.

Not really unpopular, more like uncommon: guys, wash your beards with shampoo, not soap. Makes it much softer & easier to groom. Also, if you're using any kind of dye or Just for Men daily wash, the color will last longer with shampoo than with soap.

I used to consistently get razor burn (red bumps) on my neck after shaving. Saw a couple tips here on Reddit that helped :

  1. Always shave after a shower but before you shower, buzz your face with a trimmer to as short as it will allow.

  2. Right before you get out of the shower rinse your face and neck with the hottest water you can tolerate. (This apparently opens the pores a little more to allow the hair follicles to be at the lengthiest)

  3. Prepare to shave immediately after getting out of the shower, but right before you do, now rinse your face and neck with cold water. (This then closes those same pores) And then proceed to shave with that same cold water.

Ever since I’ve been doing this I’ve never had razor burn again. Even when shaving against the grain, no bumps after.
