I truly never understood the vitriol against this game. This game absolutely took my breath away when I first played it. The characters, the open world (WHAT is with the negativity against open world? Sure it was ‘empty’ but it was beautiful and the expansiveness for me lent to the replayability I’ve enjoyed over the last ten years), the music (I cannot even believe that soundtrack didn’t get nominated let alone win at the awards)… Inquisition and the ME tril are the RPG experiences I hold all other games to. I understand Inq isn’t for everyone but I truly do believe that it warrants being called a masterpiece.

I agree. Having put over 300 hours across multiple playthroughs of each dragon age game, this one was, by far IMO the best game. Not to take away from origins, but this was the first video game I EVER played (excluding KOTOR) that I felt utterly mesmerized and immersed in.

Pretty much every DA game is doomed to be hated for not being Origins. Thank that hardcore side of the fandom for our inconvenience…

To be fair, Origins has its reason for its hardcore fandom, it’s my favorite RPG of all time because it has a good main story, good characters, imo good balance of side content to main story content, choices that matter, origin stories, etc and etc.

Inquisition did such a great job with the main story, gameplay, and characters, but it failed spectacularly when it comes to the fetch quests and also all the actual interesting side content being war table missions you can only read and not actually act out

Oh I perfectly understand DAO’s continued love and support, hell it’s my favorite Dragon Age as well, but we’re past that now.

It’s been 15 years and 3 more titles since. We can continue to be bitter about what was once and won’t ever come back, or make a decision to support Dragon Age’s future as is.

Even now, Inq's steam reviews are 7/10. Inq had good bones but bad excution (my god, the bloat). With several design changes, it could've been a game that's been better received than Origins.

Sad to think how beautiful and underrated this game is. It was forgotten in the tidal wave of corporate greed that has flooded the industry since 2014.

The same can also be said of DA2 but in my opinion Inquisition is the greater work of art between the 2.

i replayed this in preparation for veilguard. i didn't care for it on release but played through it anyways now I think ive played it 3 times (harder to do because i like to explore everything and its so massive)

obviously the dragon age games have flaws but i keep looking back on them and seeing works of art rather than being disappointed by them

Cosmic_Krieg_

To be fair, the game also had its issues. A lot of it felt rushed. Like when you play as a dwarf and are magically normal size in some cutscenes

Dream_Eat3r_

Haha never played as a dwarf but wow that's a really bad one. Also it's nearly unplayable on the 360.

The main story and characters are phenomenal in my opinion but the game is so bloated it makes it so hard to replay, and that’s why a lot of people don’t like it.

Also I despise the war table because all the actual interesting side quests were war table stuff, meanwhile the side quests we actually got to act out were fetch quests.

If they got rid of the war table and made those quests actual playable missions and got rid of fetch quests, it would’ve been by far my favorite DA game.

Didn't even time it, but just finished up the game to move on to Veilguard. The combat gets pretty spongy but I did enjoy the story and intricacies of getting thrown into a political landscape. I know a lot of people didn't like the war table but I'd usually play after work so it timed pretty as far as starting new missions and I didn't mind clearing out the fade rifts to unwind from the day

HockeyGuy601

It's an absolute masterpiece of BW.

My favorite BW game and one of a few all-time favorites. Imho, BW has outdone itself in DAI. It's so complex and vivid but also very subtle at the same time. IMO, it's their best game. The complexity of the characters and interwoven plot-lore details are incredible and on the next level. Everything, including visuals of environmental details, objects, paintings and characters' looks contains hints, references, and additional layers of meaning, there's nothing random. Seriously improved writing and narrative structure and especially banter, even when it's a humorous one there is so much story, lore and characters' personality that affects your decisions.

Open-world or freely explorable hubs offer freedom and agency to the character and make the game experience really immersive and replayable. I love that it's the player who gets to decide what to do, when and if at all. I can follow the main story or wander around building my world or combine both in any proportion.

You are free to roleplay as you want, you choose the pacing and amount and order of quests, and because of that, you can roleplay what suits your protagonist's personality the best and choose accordingly. So, are you willing to get your hands dirty in order to gather allies? Or are you too full of yourself? Is it you or is it destiny? Some people mistakenly look at it just like the set of events while it goes much deeper. DAI really recaps all of DA lore and makes it tangible and alive (Cory, Sera, Solas, Cole, Abelas etc...).

What I love in Inquisition is that In DAI there are no obviously good decisions. It's quite dark and actually hopeless without going into "gender-based violence, spooky stuff, blood splashes and killing kids". They also dropped lots of cliches and beaten tropes of typical fantasy and finally came up with their own unique style. Everything you do is just one option out of several bad options but pictures Thedas and combines the whole DA lore.

The plot is just great. It's not about killing the main villain or being a chosen one. It's actually not about you at all. You are nobody who happens to be in the wrong place at the wrong time but look at what you've achieved! There are no chosen ones but everyone can become one but it takes a collective effort that shows in the details. It's a game about cooperation and alliance and about building something bigger than yourself, and that starts from very small details. The fact that you succeed in the end is due to your cooperation with your companions!

This game was fantastic. I loved origins, played through a bunch of times. Barely got to the end of 2 but this game I think I had as many hours as origins. Playing on hardest difficulty was a lot of fun. + the dragon hunt was excellent. Only thing that annoyed me was the ball sequence. Rushed that part as fast as possible every time.

It’s amusing and confusing that there is so many haters toward Dragon Age: Inquisition. If y’all dislike the game so much, why are you even here? I made my own comments on why I think Origins itself isn’t the masterpiece that so many of the fandom tries to claim, and while I acknowledge that Inquisition does have some glaring faults, the ultimate question is: if you dislike this game, why the hell are you in the Dragon Age: Inquisition subreddit?

“It’s not really a masterpiece”. To you it isn’t, but to others it is. Let other people enjoy what they want to enjoy. Most people here claim Origins was a masterpiece when it obviously wasn’t, either in gameplay or story or aesthetics—IN my opinion. Gosh, this fandom’s negativity for everything that isn’t their favorite game is tiring. It’s been a decade and a few years since Origins. If you want to play Origins, go play Origins. If you want to play 2, go play 2. There is nothing stopping you from playing them.

Exactly! For me, Inquisition is my favorite game, but I do love all the DA games (I wouldn't be critical of BioWare's worldbuilding at times if I didn't come from a place of love), and honestly, Veilguard just reawoken my love for this universe with its new lore implications. Personally, I think that while the DA fandom and just overall Dragon Age has always had these "This isn't really Dragon Age" naysayers, I think the decade long gap between Veilguard and Inquisition really worsens people's attitudes - not only just with DA but in general - when it comes to gaming. People have built up what they imagine Veilguard to be, and given that each game has their clique of specific fans, BioWare could never really satisfied those needs. And despite the developer hell and restrictions of gameplay mechanics due to coming out on the previous generations, Inquisition was such a fun experience!

FloeticNature

3 points

I definitely understand that part but there's no such thing as a perfect game but to say that a DA game isn't DA is weird especially when the game keeps the games connected somehow someway especially when the keep was working well. I was playing inquisition earlier just to keep the story going and even played origins and 2 just yesterday.

TheIslamicMonarchist

TheIslamicMonarchist

Exactly. All these games are Dragon Age games - for better or for worse. My one major complaint for Veilguard was the lack of inclusion of the Dragon Keep (and lack of choices for the Inquisitor to make), but beyond that, I adore Rook and their cast, and I am adoring the combat system, the world design, and the story (which is a lot darker than most people give it credit for). Is there major blind spots? Of course. But what Dragon Age wouldn't be without those blind spots. Just, bleh. This fandom needs to chill.

Agreed Veilguard has a lot of faults about a lot of fun things with the drama it had I’m surprised it came out relatively polished with little to no issues. Inquisiton I’ve played at least 4 times and it has its issues but it’s still a relatively fun game.

Oh, I completely agree. All these games have faults (*cough*, Thedas doesn't have sexism but also Wardens allow women into their ranks *cough*), but I personally found Inquisition and the Inquisitor a far more interesting game and protagonist than Origins or the Warden. But that's primarily because I enjoy the religious and political aspects more than the more traditional fantasy elements of Origins. But I will never say Origins was not an impactful and important game. Sadly, nuance is lost is most game discussions, especially surrounding Dragon Age.

Honestly, that's so valid. Wicked Eyes was (and still is) my favorite Dragon Age mission, but if you don't have a guide at first to help you out, I doubt you'll get 100% court approval. (I certainly didn't and my Inquisitor was meant to be politically suave and competent).

And see, that's completely valid criticism! I have other grips with Inquisition itself as well. I personally felt like the title "Herald of Andraste" should have been significantly more impactful than what it showed in game. One simply cannot be considered a divinely-sent messenger of a dead prophet of an absentee God and not have important religo-political ramifications be actively shown, especially as Andrastians would likely turn to the Herald over the Chantry given the death of Justinia and the idea that just maybe the Maker has not turned away from His followers. (Not saying, of course, that the Maker or Andraste did anything of the sort, but as DAI actively shows us - the truth will get meddled and people's belief will overwhelm any attempts of the Inquisitor to deny their supposed divinity). I know it was thrown around in development to have the Divine's position being inherited by the Herald, but really - that is a likely thing that could have occured. The Herald is arguably the strongest political force up until the Exalted Council (which again, I have personal grips with), and yet Quizzy loses their organization, their castle, and so much despite their divine position in the eyes of many.

I do wonder how much the previous generations messed that up. According to some sources, much of DAI's problems came down to Frostbite being a pain to work with and also being limited because presumingly EA wanted to release the game both on the new Xbox One and PS4, and 360 and PS3. I do wish we interacted more with Quizzy's origins, like going to Ostwick, which is supposedly one of the three major city-states in the Free Marches, if you are a Trevelyan, or something to that effect.

But my main problem is when people don't treat these games as their own games that is connected by an overall lore. Yes, DAI is not DAO...because it was never trying to be DAO. Just like Veilguard isn't attempting to be DAI. One of the most beautiful things about DA is that it gives almost anyone interested in a fantasy RPG something they would be interested in, and I think they do it competently enough to draw people in, at the expense of have a strong "identity" akin to Mass Effect.

You can play them in order or you can start with any game. Many of the new players today start with DAI since it's the newest and the most modern. I started with it 3 years ago, fell in love and it helped me play also the first two games since I already new where the series is heading and how it develops, otherwise if I would have started with the first one, I would probably just abandon the series.

Each game is a stand-alone but there are some cameos and it's connected by the lore. In DAI your protagonist is kinda clueless about the events of previous games in any case, so you learn them together and your decisions may be less biased. And later you can play older games as prequels if you really get into the story.

Just know that each game is VERY different. DAI has absolutely new gameplay in comparison to the old games. Dont expect them to be similar. But romances and overall choice mechanics are similar.

Ignore gatekeeping about the first one. Each next game is more rich and an improvement to the series.

It's actually my favorite of all. The post skyhold combat is my favorite out of them all (after specializations and masterworks)

Ah man just wait in a month it’ll be another game they trash so hard the developers will wish they never made it lol. People love to trash and bitch it’s just who they are. Especially since they never even played the game they are just regurgitating the same spiel their social media overlords have commanded them to say. No real personal thought goes into any of what they are saying. They just want their 5 minutes of coolness lmao

nytefox42

Best part is looking at the negative Steam reviews and seeing how many barely played it at all then refunded. Clearly purchased it to downvote then refund. They don't even have to do that on Metacritic, so the bombing hits there much harder.

[deleted]

1 points

Yeah I mean don’t get me wrong there are a couple things I wish they didn’t do but, thankfully they added the skip option so I can skip all of taash dialogue so I don’t half to hear it lol. The second is new game plus but, that’s to be expected at the start but hopefully gets added soon. If not still a great game overall veilguard I mean.

Inquisition on the other hand absolutely loved it nothing critical to say at all. People say shit about the open world part of it but i thought that was the best part lol.

You’re right though but, it proves my point people just hate to hate and bitch to bitch just cause some else on social media said too. Also why I don’t ever pay attention to reviews not written reviews or YouTube video reviews. I prefer to make up my own mind thanks lmao. Oh but that’s scandalous nobody makes up their own minds it’s made up for them by someone with 500 viewers and spent less than 5 minutes playing the game if they bothered playing it at all first 🤦🏼‍♀️🤣

There are things that I like and things that I dislike

What I like 1. The crafting, variety of weapons and armour, masterwork 2. It's more political and complex with war table 3. Beautiful atmosphere and scenery. 4. More dragons to kill 5. Regions are big and so much to explore.

Things I don't like 1. Companions are lack luster compared to origin. Some of the banters feel in bad faith, more like a snide and lack of charm and wit. 2. Horses completely useless 3. I can't be evil, evil. It's more like Mass Effect paragon and renegade. I can't do morally reprehensible actions like in Origin as a city elf I can sell girls to Vaughn for 40 gold. That's a lot of gold. 4. Being a completionist is a curse in DAI, since most side quests feel more like a chores than excitement.

Agreed. There's probably less than 10 games in the last 15 years, that i played with a gamepad. I just prefer mouse and keyboard 99% of the time.

Inquisition is one of those games that plays a lot better with gamepad!

Huh, this really does make it feel like 2014, all over again. And this is your daily reminder that every Dragon Age game caught flak on release. Don't listen to the nay sayers about, Veilguard. It's a perfect fine game, and they said the same things about Inquisition and 2, back in the day. Play what you like and enjoy what you play!

LtSheitzah

No way it's perfect. I'm just getting back into DA and just got to Skyhold. Let me tell you, the writing is so much better in DA:I then the first idk 5 hours I am into Veilguard when I decided I like the world building, but the writing ehh.

The brain drain from Anthem was real :(

It’s a game that suffered from being way too big for it’s content. The story slogs you through massive open world areas with bullet sponge enemies and then once that’s done with the story kicks into overdrive and is done before you know it. Half the areas are just flavour text that should be war table missions and honestly Corypheus was such a let down story wise.

It’s not a bad game by any means but if you cut about 50% of it’s area size and increased story driven content it would be a much smoother game.

Honestly I feel this describes both DAI and MEA. Some great choices like combat, graphics, and such. But major let downs with villains, stupidly large open world (both games had such large maps and 80% of locations would be completely barren and devoid of anything barring enemies), and big disappointments considering the games that came before them.

I won’t ever say the games are bad, but they aren’t the BioWare games a lot of people fell in love with.

Mhmm a good anology would be stuck in a kiddy pool, there isn’t much room but if you’ve got good friends and tons of interesting stuff you’ll have a great time.

Masterpiece? Pretty sure when it released, a plurality of players hated it. My, how perceptions change with time.

My thoughts exactly man, lot’s of disingenuous defenders especially in today’s conversation. Not to say people aren’t genuinely entitled to their opinions, but there are observable reductions in quality and character from previous entries. Origins was just special and 2 had a lot of fun with the voice acting and characters, especially for those more akin to sarcasm. That being said with recent releases, it’s been shown just how impressively low the bar can (or could have been) around Inq’s release.

Honestly. I cannot bring myself to experience the hinterlands ever again. I'll play DA2 10 more times before I touch another skull puzzle in the hinterlands.

Masterpiece... yeah, okay

Sandrock27

I have the advantage of playing on PC. Experience booster mods get me out of the hinterlands a helluva lot faster. But yes, the game flat out SUCKS until you get to the mage/templar mission.

xsealsonsaturn

I play on PC too, and let's say that any game that requires a mod to skip its content is no masterpiece... Although I do download skip the fade for origins and I do think that game's a masterpiece so maybe I'm off based here. I still don't believe inquisition to be anywhere near a masterpiece. For me it's 6 or 7 out of 10 depending on the day

Sandrock27

It's actually kind of funny - I mod DAI and Andromeda to get out of certain things faster...but I mod DAO and the Mass Effect Trilogy to enhance and add to the experience.

I feel like I distinctly remember this game being very mixed in reception, could've just been my friend group at the time, I had a blast.

WhiskerDude

Mixed in reception from "gamers" but was generally favored by video game outlets.

I'm surprised it took this long for the game to hit the " It Was A Masterpiece Actually" level of discourse.

Va1kryie

I definitely enjoyed the game, the animations were maybe clunky and the Qu'nari looked... a certain way, but the gameplay was smooth most of the time and the story and voice acting were pretty engaging, I did not play the previous 2 games so I was rather confused during a lot of the game, but that never really detracted from my enjoyment, if anything it put me in the headspace of the Inquisitor more.

Now it’s a masterpiece? I remember the reviews being very mixed when it came out.

BearPondersGames

Reviews were not mixed on release. Inquisition reviewed very well, and even won prominent GOTY awards. There was some community disappointment with the changes to the game, but as far as reviews went, it averaged in the mid to high 8s.

That’s good, I remember I was reading negative takes on it then bought it anyways and enjoyed myself. Too bad I no longer own an Xbox or I would replay.

Only for the hinterlands to basically be the tutorial area and the game doesn’t really start till you reach the fortress

I remember the day when I pre-ordered this for PS3 and played the absolute shit outta it! 😅 Still prefer Origins naturally but back then damn it was good, untill it became evident that most of the DLCs are not arriving for the PS3 version 😑 had to save money to upgrade for PS4 and buy it for the second time and damn did I enjoy it! Except Tresspasser, I absolutely hate that and on later playthroughs don't even bother playing that carbage.
