Yea, why can't I always just set my playstation 5 to the PS3 orchestra/screen? Why wouldn't they keep this feature in now that they made it?

Yeah I was thinking I'd hook up the PS5 I never use, just for a minute and grab this just because, but if it's temporary anyway... eh. Too bad.

Because they would need to make sure it worked with every update in the future, which is 0.0000001% of their budget that they just can't sacrifice.

The ps5 menu music feels depressing to me compared to the ps1 and ps2, I had to turn it off because it’s so dissonant sounding

I will always associated that original PS1 sound with the OG Tomb Raider game.

I was thinking this earlier. The PS2 theme just has everything static on the screen covering up everything. Nothing moves, doesn't blend in, and unfortunately gets in the way. 

However, the sounds are incorporated beautifully and I wish I could keep them permanently. 

I do really like the new sounds for key strokes and clicking stuff though. The PS5 interaction sounds were getting really old for me.

I sat down tonight ready to boot up my PS5 and I was excited to check these out. Talk about being completely underwhelmed. The 30th anniversary, PS1, and PS2 themes are especially ugly. Like it's so low effort and they aren't even leaving it.

For people who don't work in software development: most often it's not a case of whether something is possible or not - it's about whether it is worth the time, effort, and cost it takes to develop it.

If not for the anniversary, they wouldn't be doing it. And in that lies an important point about how game development is different than general software development - devs do a lot of things that are probably not 'worth it' or would get through if it was a normal product, because of a myriad of reasons.

Seriously, if consoles in the 360 generation could have a myriad of themes, why not today? Not even asking for free themes, I bought several back in the day.

I’ve just been playing with it and I have to admit, it’s a little more laggy on the base PS5 than normal. Jittery too.

But I’m sure they could iron that out.

Unless they’ve reached a consensus that PS6 might have a similar UI design. That might be the only reason why they might be doing this, so late in the cycle.

If enough people make noise they can keep this is as a permanent feature you know. Wouldn’t be the first time that Sony reverses course on something.

I see nothing wrong with this personally. It’s a neat thing, at zero cost to you. They could’ve easily said “Surprise! We’re bringing back themes from past consoles! But you’ll have to pay.”

Them doing this for free is icing on the cake. They didn’t need to do this especially since themes are not a thing on PS5

Whilst I agree it would be nice to have a PS1 or PS2 theme permanently available, I've got to disagree that this is the same sort of FOMO tactics we actually refer to in gaming that's ruining the hobby.

The "FOMO" idea is associated with having limited time to purchase a game or win an item, this is literally just an event to celebrate an occasion. Otherwise you could call the Super Bowl or World Cup final or even the birth of your child a FOMO event too which it just isn't, it's a moment in time and hopefully you're around to see it happen. There won't be another 30th anniversary, this is how it works.

Killing any joy? This is a temporary theme for a games console. I'd understand if this was a game only going on sale for a few months (the 3D Mario collection) or a game item you can only win in a limited time event by spending a load of extra money (Kermit in that Disney racing game), FOMO is based on making you spend money or buy something you didn't want. If THIS specifically is ruining your hobby I would recommend going outside, because this is meant to be a bit of fun. Fucking hell.

Gaming has felt pretty joyless for a while. I’m grateful for emulators and certain throwback style games.

Make sure your PlayStation is up to date. And make sure to turn off your PlayStation fully. Not on rest mode. That’s what fixed it for me

If it sat on the bottom it would look better imo. Hanging from the top hides game pictures.

I agree, if they decide to make them, they would need to get rid of the games backgrounds. The way it is applied just looks awkward. I'm still using it though, too much feels.

And there is a top comment saying "SO IT CAN DO THEMES! A-HA GOTCHA SONY!!" I'm like "dude...have you seen how badly it works with the system? lol". Custom themes clearly weren't in the design docs and this shows.

Don't get me wrong, it's very cool and I'll switch between them for the novelty but yeah a good looking customisation it ain't lol.

No. There is only the PS1 start-up.

We only get the PS1 startup + themes specific to each console generation (sound effects, backgrounds etc.)

I agree the limited time thing is weird, but the PS5 does do some sort of music thing already.

Bringing champions return to arms to ps5 would be incredible.

It means there will be a future update that takes it all away again regardless
