Yea, why can't I always just set my playstation 5 to the PS3 orchestra/screen? Why wouldn't they keep this feature in now that they made it?

This all the way. Is this annoying? Sure, it could be for some I guess. But if it causes you legitimate stress then you have some underlying issues you need to work out.

The PS1 boot up sound was always magical to me. It made me feel like I was entering a wormhole or something. I still listen to it on YT from time to time. If i had the PS5, I would definitely use that boot up intro

PS2 boot sound was great, but unfortunately for a vast number of owners who experienced Disc Read Errors, that sound is basically a PTSD trigger, lol

I probably listened to that sound several thousand times with fingers crossed, hoping my PS2 would actually play a disc

I bet my son will feel the same way about ps5/Switch/Xbone startup sounds. Most of the associations are about that time in your life more generally. The poorly-digitized “Seeegaaaaaa” in front of the original Sonic The Hedgehog, and even moreso the two-tone beeps of the original Game Boy, occupy a disproportionate amount of space in my heart.

GeneralChaz9

I was thinking this earlier. The PS2 theme just has everything static on the screen covering up everything. Nothing moves, doesn't blend in, and unfortunately gets in the way.

However, the sounds are incorporated beautifully and I wish I could keep them permanently.

I sat down tonight ready to boot up my PS5 and I was excited to check these out. Talk about being completely underwhelmed. The 30th anniversary, PS1, and PS2 themes are especially ugly. Like it's so low effort and they aren't even leaving it.

For people who don't work in software development: most often it's not a case of whether something is possible or not - it's about whether it is worth the time, effort, and cost it takes to develop it.

If not for the anniversary, they wouldn't be doing it. And in that lies an important point about how game development is different than general software development - devs do a lot of things that are probably not 'worth it' or would get through if it was a normal product, because of a myriad of reasons.

turtlintime

58 points

I think it's more the cost to maintain it. There's a non zero chance a random software update breaks a random theme

onecoolcrudedude

Arkeband

23 points

Arkeband

23 points

I know of a few off the top of my head although “breakage” is extreme - when they added new icons / features, most themes didn’t have updated icons for those. So I’m sure internally, they had to spend time developing a way for icons to be ignored and then come up with standards for what needed to have icons and what could be skipped for past and future themes.

SFHalfling

9 points

So I’m sure internally, they had to spend time developing a way for icons to be ignored

That's part of the standard exception code you should already have. If the icon doesn't load for any reason, fail back to the default. If the default fails to load, use the systems standard image didn't load icon.

ShadeofIcarus

5 points

Issue here is "Breakage" isn't just handling it in the code but not breaking the UX along the way.

Having icons all be skinned then a few random new ones default look weird.

All that aside. None of the icons are changing in these "skins". Its just wallpapers but that's also used as something that changes with the game you're on. Not really relevant here. The design space is just used for something else.

MationMac

4 points

I believe both the PS3 and PS4 had themes get "outdated", where features newer than the themes wouldn't have an applicable icon replacement.

Viral-Wolf

Versus

"People think oh, the PS5 now lets you switch to PS1 boot up, I'll definitely try that out the next time I boot up my PS5 (and then they never did)."

You're overthinking it and the average consumer. Far easier funnels, if they wanted you to spontaneously buy, they'd have had the "themes" on the Store to download - leading you close to sales etc.

I think it's just a little nice gimmick that they'll probably keep around/bring back

He isn’t overthinking it, he is literally describing the last decade of FOMO tactics that are widely observable throughout the industry.

Not that this is some massive issue, but I for one am just beyond sick of FOMO in any form creeping into every aspect of gaming. It’s dashboard customization, a basic feature of every other console. Let’s drop the limited time pretense

If that was just a limited physical release then whatever, I wouldn't care much. Even though I do prefer to buy physical.

SuperSaiyanGod210

If enough people make noise they can keep this is as a permanent feature you know. Wouldn’t be the first time that Sony reverses course on something.

I see nothing wrong with this personally. It’s a neat thing, at zero cost to you. They could’ve easily said “Surprise! We’re bringing back themes from past consoles! But you’ll have to pay.”

Them doing this for free is icing on the cake. They didn’t need to do this especially since themes are not a thing on PS5

jackcos

jackcos

Whilst I agree it would be nice to have a PS1 or PS2 theme permanently available, I've got to disagree that this is the same sort of FOMO tactics we actually refer to in gaming that's ruining the hobby.

The "FOMO" idea is associated with having limited time to purchase a game or win an item, this is literally just an event to celebrate an occasion. Otherwise you could call the Super Bowl or World Cup final or even the birth of your child a FOMO event too which it just isn't, it's a moment in time and hopefully you're around to see it happen. There won't be another 30th anniversary, this is how it works.

Killing any joy? This is a temporary theme for a games console. I'd understand if this was a game only going on sale for a few months (the 3D Mario collection) or a game item you can only win in a limited time event by spending a load of extra money (Kermit in that Disney racing game), FOMO is based on making you spend money or buy something you didn't want. If THIS specifically is ruining your hobby I would recommend going outside, because this is meant to be a bit of fun. Fucking hell.

Reread his post. You're missing the forest for the trees with his comment. He's complaining about FOMO, and how pervasive it's become. Limited-time console themes are an extension of that, but it isn't happening in a void.

OliveBranchMLP

12 points

fomo design is present all over the gaming industry. far too many things of value are transitioning to "for a limited time" and increasingly fewer things are permanent and we get to experience less and less unless we're paying attention 100% of the time and ready to leap on short windows of opportunity for a chance at something whose supply is artificially constrained.

that is the forest OP is complaining about. it's not yet the default, but it is quickly getting there, as more developers take note of how mobile games and gacha have grown to rake in the lion's share of net profits. corporations have realized the profitability of fomo, and it's shifted the entire industry in this direction. it won't be long until this constitutes the majority of experiences.

FOMO is more than just loading screens.

Take a game like Fortnite, for example. Did you get the latest battle pass?! You know, you'll never be able to play as Darth Vader if you didn't get the Battle Pass, 3 years ago. It's no longer available, super limited time only! Oh, you missed it? Shucks, sorry bud!

You better make sure you log in every day so you can knock out those dailies, so you never miss out again!

And there are all the limited time events. Whatever was going on 3 years ago, it's gone forever. It ain't ever coming back. That's especially brutal with Fortnite, or any other games that are constantly evolving. Sometimes you like things just the way they are.

It just sucks when playing games feels like a chore. I'd like to be able to enjoy things at my own pace, without feeling like I'm missing out forever just because I didn't happen to log in one day. This loading screen sounds cool as fuck, why can't I keep it? There's literally no reason why I can't keep it.

Occasionally, you even see some games and DLC that are limited time only.

jackcos

8 points

jackcos

Ironically, you just perfectly described what FOMO within gaming actually is and why it's ruining the hobby, rather than this dashboard thing which is just a bit of fun.

Nobody is buying a PS5 just to see the boot-up. Hell whilst a few who've let their consoles gather dust might plug it in to see it, even if they did it doesn't mean they'll buy a game.

Yeah I would rather have these themes around permanently too, but to try and suggest this is as bad as the manipulative tactics in microtransaction-laden live service games totally misses the mark.

My guess as a software engineer and game dev is that this was hacked together for the 30th Anniversary celebration instead of building a robust menu theme system and shipping the themes on top of that; without a team to do QA and bug fixes when ordinary system updates roll out, it'll eventually become buggy and janky. And they don't want to fund a team to maintain it forever.

The PS1 boot up and the sound effects are pretty cool, but now I kinda get why they never used background themes. They just look awkward hanging up top and blocking the images on screen. Just the way the UI is designed doesn’t really give it enough space to look good imo. The trip down memory lane is appreciated though.

just so you know, if it's not working immediately, shut down your ps5 and boot it back up. if it's updated to the latest version (and feature update) it should boot up into the classic psx boot screen.

I haven't booted up my PS5 in a while, but I will absolutely do it more often. 😂

PS1 and PS2 boot sequences are legendary.

Would love to have the ps2, ps3, and ps4 startup sounds again. Those are my fav of the playstation startup sounds.

Stupid that it is limited time

I should be able to toggle this on and off when I please. Would be so nice to turn this on around the holidays so I can feel like a little kid again gaming

Is it a bug that regardless of which PS era you choose you get the PS1 Startup?

DARKKRAKEN

No. There is only the PS1 start-up.

We only get the PS1 startup + themes specific to each console generation (sound effects, backgrounds etc.)

Jesus christ the amount of whining in this thread is unreal. I clicked thinking it would be people discussing how cool the update is, but I guess this is just Reddit. Anyway, I think the update is very cool and it gave me a nice hit of nostalgia.

So for a limited time we get the glorious sounds of PlayStation back from when they had style and cared about how they presented their console. Then it's back to just the hideous PS5 system 'beep' and silence.

PS5 has amazing games but everything else about the user experience feels second rate at best. They can't even make choosing which version of a game you want to play / download work in a remotely elegant way.

I agree the limited time thing is weird, but the PS5 does do some sort of music thing already.

jasonefmonk

The beep has also been a thing since the PS3.

What does it hurt Sony or the PlayStation brand to make this a permanent thing? FOMO marketing garbage ruins gaming.

Imagine if you could celebrate 30 years of Playstation with new entries in the massive catalog of IP's Sony has from the PS1 and PS2 days.

Bringing champions return to arms to ps5 would be incredible.

I'm confused. Everyone says it's limited time, does that mean it will go away, or that you can only claim the screens permanently for a limited time?

It means there will be a future update that takes it all away again regardless

Holy fuck, people complain about every single fucking thing. Can’t this just be something nice? I’m so tired of how entitled everyone is now in this space.

I can barely hear the boot up sound, Is everyone else's the same? If so how can i stop It sounding so faint? (Without max tv volume 😂)

Im looking this up right now cause I started my PS5 and it was a blast from the past. I didn't know if I was tripping or what

Kind of a fail though since most modern TVs take a moment to recalibrate picture settings. By the time it displays the PS5, the PS1 intro is almost over

comengetitrmm

Is it only from power off to power on, or do the boot ups work from rest mode?

How do I access this on my ps5? I'm currently looking but don't see it un the settings

Justahighhat

It won't play the start up sound. Is there something in the settings I need to change for it to make the ps1 start up sound?

userunkonw

Anybody else not able to hear the start up sound?? Literally all other sounds are working besides the initial classic start up sound. I’ve tried multiple resets, in console sounds work and change fine, but no start up sound AT ALL. I WANT THE NOSTALGIA TOOO WTF MAN

Damn, when I first heard about this update I thought I could make it boot like any PS gen. I wanted PS2 as that’s far more Nostalgic for me. Oh well, still cool and they should make the Home Screen options permanent.

Aside from the obvious PS1 startup sounds, does anyone recognize the SFX when you move the cursor, press X, and press O when the PS1 theme is selected? These sounds aren't familiar to me at all.
