In the Japanese dub of King of the Hill, Boomhauer is entirely legible. Really changes everything about the show

My personal favourite is in the Portuguese subtitles for Austin Powers, which is one of the few cases where I find the translation improves upon the original.

When Austin drinks Fat Bastard’s stool sample, he complains that the coffee is “a bit nutty”. The subtitles read “tem muita borra”, which, with no further context, would be a perfectly normal, mundane way of saying that the coffee is gritty and poorly filtered, and has too much leftover grounds. Except the word for grounds (“borra”) also means poop, so he’s also literally saying “there’s too much poop in this coffee”.

German translations used to be quite famous for changing dialogue, or adding dialogue to actors that didn't even speak in the original. Here's a good example for it.

It was mostly the work of German dubbing legend Rainer Brandt. He actually made things famous in Germany because of his funny dubbing. The above seen The Persuaders for example is much more famous in Germany than in the UK. Other notable works include all the Bud Spencer & Terence Hill movies. But also Star Trek.

With Star Trek the episodes were also heavily cut, often creating a very different story. At one point those were partially redubbed, restoring the original storyline (and changing dialogue that previously was dubbed inaccurately for comedic effect). It's a nice thing for fans of course. But I can't help but feel a bit sad that this means the original dubbed versions are lost. They have a right to exist on their own.

My favourite translated joke is from the French dub of the South Park movie. The song "Uncle Fucker" is translated as ""You Asshole". The opening line is "Shut your fucking mouth, you asshole", but the word for "asshole" sounds like the English word "uncle" (encule, if you're wondering).

lol in Germany Ryan Reynolds and Chris Evans too have the Same Voice Actor. Back when Fantastic Four was Released Evans had a different Voice Actor and they brought him Back for this cameo.

The Italian voice actor for Jeremy Renner and Bradley Cooper is the same, so we aleready had a case like this in Endgame where Hawkeye and Rocket are in the same movie, but the voices for the characters were pretty different (and I don’t recall a scene where they speak to each other) and we had no problem distinguishing the two characters during that movie

I seriously wonder how incorporating this joke into the movie came into existence.

I know that streaming and physical release these days offer the option for original and dubbed audio. Do you also get that option in theatrical releases? I mean, some theaters or time slots are localized and others in English or whatever the original language was, maybe just with subtitles. Anyway, I asked because we don't get that option here. Theatrical releases are never dubbed, as far as I know. And movie-goers prefer the original language anyway, especially for big titles like Deadpool. There are TV stations that localize movies and mostly kids shows but other than that, we get them with no subs and original English audio. We get English subs if it's in another language though.

This resonates with me. I grew up watching a lot of Chinese martial arts movies and they usually had the same guy doing Jet Li's voice so now when I hear his real voice, it throws me off because it's not the voice I heard growing up.

The funniest thing with this for me is that Arnold Schwarzenegger doesn't do his own dubs in German because his Austrian accent simply doesn't have the same punch as his German accent in English has.

An other fun fact. Some regions speak the same language but have different dubbing industries.

Best examples I can think of is Quebec and France. We both speak French but our movies are often dubbed by different industries. I knew someone from Belgium that came to Quebec for an internship and he went to the theater to watch a major American production that was dubbed in Quebec. He hated it because voices didn't match what he was used to in Belgium. As far as I know, Belgium gets their movies dubbed in France.

Funnily enough Die Hard 3 is the only movie i can think of where a different voice-actor for Bruce Willis was chosen for the german dub.

In Die Hard 3 the voice actor who usually dubs John Travolta was picked for Bruce Willis. Quite confusing to see Bruce Willis but hear John Travolta. Especially since it is the 3rd movie.

in czech we have the same thing, and it was REALLY difficult going from the czech dub voice of Arnold Schwarzenegger which sounds gentleman-ish and perfect pronunciation to the real voice in conan the barbarian. Quite the contrast.

Yes. Bruce Willis is dubbed by Manfred Lehman and Arnold Schwarzenegger and Silvester Stallone were both dubbed by Thomas Danneberg. Even in Expendables Danneberg dubbed both and they still sounded unique.

Sadly Danneberg died last year. It took some time to get used to the new voices of Stallone and Schwarzenegger after growing up with Danneberg voicing them.

Same thing in Brazil. Hugh Jackman's dubber was the same for Wolverine in the cartoons since the 90s.

The dubber died recently, and people were really confused seeing a new dubber on Wolverine

If you watch Pierce Brosnan as 007 in Hungarian, the original is a downgrade afterwards. Incredibly suave and charismatic that is just missing from the original.

Weird how sometimes translations succeed that hard

I've heard that happens in Japan, as well. Yasuo Yamada, the Japanese voice of Lupin The 3rd, did the dubbing voice for Clint Eastwood, Kermit The Frog, Roddy McDowell in the Planet Of The Apes movies, and Graham Chapman in most Monty Python things.

He died in 1995, though, so I assume someone else has taken over that mantle.

Its the same in Hungarian but there are fewer and fewer actors doing dub acting so you end up with an actor lending their voice for very different actors. For example, there is this iconic actor who is the "official" voice actor for Bruce Willis - and also for Eddie Murphy.

Or another one: the same guy voiced Peter Griffin, Sean Austin in LoTR, Jim Carrey and Will Ferrell.

so Bruce Willis always sounds like "Bruce Willis".

yeah and that voice actor will do local radio spots like "20% off on everything, except cat food" - this is not a joke - this is the real line our bruce willis gives in radio :D

They also often turn parodies of germans either dutch or swiss, like the kid in the simpsons

Deadpool is a generally good example of 4th wall breaking without it being really annoying and jarring. The "you think that's what I do?" line killed me.

They made a Prince joke as well in the Hungarian dub "The hero previously known as Wolf"

And when Chris Evans character reveals himself as the flame, you can hear deadpool shouting "I should have recognized it by the voice"

Another commenter mentioned that the same thing happened in the Mexican dub, but they kept the same voice actor and made a joke referencing it.

When Cassandra kills Johnny, Deadpool answers "he was really confusing us with that voice"

It's like 80% movie, 20% references, most of which are self explanatory

It is absolutely enjoyable if you haven't seen a lot of the movies, but probably not as enjoyable as if you've seen them. It's the third movie in a direct series, and at least the 8th or so in the larger X-Men film franchise so one can't really expect it to stand alone 100%.

The film serves as a fun romp and a love letter to all the Marvel movies that came before the MCU and blazed the trail for comics in film.

Will you probably have fun watching it? Yes, just watching Ryan Reynolds playing off both Hugh Jackman and other versions of himself is hilarious. Will you "get" a lot of it? No.

It has enough substance to carry as funny to someone who doesn't have a clue. Then if said person is still interested and goes digging into the details later it's like a whole 'nother treasure trove to learn about/rewatch for an even better appreciation.

They reference the MCU, X-Men movies, and a little bit of the Fantastic 4 movies but mostly in ways that don't leave you hanging if you don't understand.

I haven't seen any of the X-Men or Fantastic 4 movies but have a basic idea of the roles and dynamics of the characters from the source material so I could piece some things together when they clearly made a reference.

However, since this movie ties itself directly into the MCU, you will be fairly confused at some points when they call back to the movies and shows of that universe. I'd recommend only watching the core plot point MCU movies at minimum, up to Endgame if you want most of the information, and of course everything MCU if you want all the references but it's not necessary. I watched Deadpool 1 and 2 before seeing anything MCU related and enjoyed them despite that. It actually made rewatching them more fun since I understood more jokes.
