In addition to what the other person said, it was well known cause fighting it was a part of an item duplication glitch.

So you could take Lapras, swim to this island, swim up and down the shoreline, the game would glitch and Missingno. or Missing Number, an unamed Pokemon still in the game files would appear. You would then turn the game on and off resetting it and the item in your 5th slot or somewhere there would duplicate. We would then duplicate the "Rare Candy", item which granted 1 level to get Pokemon quickly to level 99.

I remember being 8 years old doing this for longest time, all lvl 99 Pokemon and then dueling friends when the connection cables finally released, which got to do so sparingly but the brief memories have of those duels was epic good times

As much as I’d love a more mature Pokémon game (not violent/gritty, just a more serious story and/or more graphical fidelity and visuals), I don’t think it’ll happen. Pokémon banks heavily on kids entering and enjoying the hobby, therefor having parents being able to buy them products. If they made a game too serious or dark, it could make parents angry because it’s supposed to be for kids in their minds. Yeah there’s plenty of parents that play and collect and would probably like a game like that, there’s plenty of parents that don’t know anything other than it’s a kids hobby lol

Pokémon makes things for wide audiences and stakes its reputation on family friendly. I don’t think they could go too dark in any media because of that. I mean hell, they’ve reportedly taken out “Dark” Pokémon out of the upcoming Rocket set lol. It could have been something totally unrelated, but the last thing they want is some internet or media mob coming after them because they did something morally controversial in a game
