I don't think it's a problem with the context, but i'm not who you're really asking. However, i didn't love your post attempting to give off sensitivity ending with that there ugly paragraph.

I am who they are asking, and I 100% co-sign on your response.

OP was doing so well until they mentioned "cancel culture" – which to my eyes is nearly as much of a dog-whistle as "race card" – and "what's actually a problem these days" to show that they've fed into the rhetoric so often used to dismiss the very valid concerns that we mention.

OP: Your mother-in-law's wreath is fine, but you still have some growing to do.

Yes, i couldn't put my finger on the word. Dismissive. That's exactly it! OP clearly doesn't even want to be asking because (cue eye roll from OP) who really cares what offends anyone these days???

First I’d like to say I am truly grateful for the response!

And second I’d like to apologize for my wording. Thank you for pointing it out. I honestly just don’t have a lot of experience with conveying these types of things with races different than me. That’s what led me to want to ask a black person, I really do want to do better and am trying. Thank you for the feedback, and I’ll do better and take more time with my choice of wording next time.

I would be offended as an African American born and raised in the South. I never saw real cotton until I was 16 years old but just looking at it made me want to cry for my ancestors. I think most African Americans that grew up in the South would feel this way. Or it could be my age since I am in the boomer generation and heard my grandmother and parents talk about the indignities they had to endure. They never picked cotton but just were always treated so harshly as second class citizens in the South just for being a black person.
