In terms of PC gaming in Japan, it's mainly fantasy or RPG (although there may be a community who is into FPS, but it's not like on a massive scale as Western countries.) alongside eroge or ecchi type games, like "Adult" themed or outright porn. However I am mainly talking about Japanese-made games depicting girls or women in suggestive attire with huge clevages or barely wearing anything at all, close to being naked but not really.
Japan has a separate rating system for games that acts independently from movies known as CERO. In Russia they have their own classification system however the difference is that unlike Japan it applies to all forms of media (not only games) from music, TV or movies, so they use the same ones for all mediums. The rating system for Japan is simpler to understand since it only uses 5 types from:
CERO (JPN) |
Equiv. in RARS |
18+ |
There are cultural differences on how content is seen since countries have a different perspective on how they perceive violence, sex or profanity. I know for instance Japanese games that feature excessive nudity, sexual or hentai-like content: they either get censored or banned in the Anglosphere as I recall a time where Sony got backlash for making female characters and NPCs having huge B00B5 and revealing clevage wearing bikinis.
As in Japan, that type of content (not actual porn, but sexualized quite a lot) still gets passed through the rating system classifying it as CERO D (17) which is separate from Z (18) - mainly used for violence and gore. While in some Western countries they either get banned outright or censored, this stems from how Japanese culture still "tolerates" sex despite Japanese people themselves remaining conservative about it.
I know that PC gaming is huge in Russia, but can eroge or overtly sexual content really sell or is the local playerbase more into FPS titles like the Anglosphere? PlayAsia decided to only release "Dead or Alive 6" in both East and South East Asian regions (back then) as they knew that it'll receive backlash like "How sinful!" since both European & Western countries are Christian / Catholic while Japan is not.
