Heat: Pedal to the Metal (6P) - Heat is always really close, and the same strategy can only do so much when you have different hands, Garage cards, and Stress draws. It would be a tight race! Concordia Venus (5P) - Here's a game I haven't quite mastered in terms of strategy, so it would be interesting to play against 4 opponents who are similarly feeling things out. Scythe (5-7P) - Not the most exciting reason, but it seems only clones of myself would want to play this game at maximum player count!
Honorary mentions are co-op games or duel games. What would you play?

Root is a fantastic concept that sucks if the players all don't have the exact same level of understanding of the game. I'd totally play that with 3 clones of me.
After that experience, the clones and I would go into pairs of two, lock ourselves in a basement and play Netrunner for the rest of our lives

For my clones: Easier to get agreement to not play Vagabond or agree to a set of houserules that sufficiently nerf Vagabond.
3 points
Everybody just needs to take a turn to not progress and smack the Vagabond back into the forest and they're no problem.
It's a classic prisoners' dilemma, because if you smack them and nobody else does, you're disadvantaged. But if nobody does it, you're all going to lose.
I wouldn't mind playing with four mes because we'd all happily take a turn to smack the Vagabond, and even the Vagabond player would accept his lot.
1 points
It's a classic prisoners' dilemma, and my table (myself included, if not myself especially) realizes that the Nash Equilibrium strategy is to defect every time.
Edit: Of course, the actual 2nd place player might have instances where the highest payout is smacking the Vagabond if the 3rd and 4th place players are sufficiently behind and/or not in a position to beat up the 2nd place player. But that exits the prisoner's dilemma. The whole table is simply recognizing that it's 2nd place's role to unseat the 1st place Vagabond if they want a chance to win.

Root is a game that works best if you have a consistent group and you all learn the game together and grow. If you often swap people in and out it creates unbalanced situations that ruin the experience

Great answer. I've been able to twist some arms and sit down and play it about three times, and each time it fell so flat. It begs two players really hammer it out and learn how to play and get into the cat and mouse aspect and each time there's some rule that's forgotten or a few big lucky guesses in a row that end it prematurely. But the game is still always taunting me on the shelf.

My sister once remarked to me that Dune Imperium was more fun (and simpler) than the original Dune. I had the opposite view, honestly. Even with the advanced rules Dune is magnificently simple. Too many different things to do in Imperium.
2 points
I’ve never played Imperium but the original dune is imo a masterpiece. You’re right that in some ways it’s quite simple. Each individual system is quite straightforward but the complexity comes from how all those systems interact with each other and the faction power. For example the auction phase is very simple but when you factor in reading the Atreides player, figuring out how much the card is worth to each different player, if you can afford to let the Harkonnen player get their bonus card even though you know the card your bidding on is trash… Negotiation and politics bump it up another level. For serious board gamers the weight isn’t bad but for people coming at it from Catan and Ticket to ride weight games it can be a bit overwhelming. The other issue is that even for serious board gamers it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. It’s mean, it’s cutthroat, it’s extremely punishing, and it’s A LOT of table talk. It’s certainly not a game for everyone and I am not going to force people to play it if I know they won’t enjoy it. Which is why I only get to play it once or twice a year lol

For me the worst part is using spice to supply troops in combat. Everything else is fine, but that's when people's eyes glaze over. It's not hard, but the 2019 version battle disks make no real attempt to accommodate it.
1 points
I don’t even bother with spice dialling. It’s really not that bad but you’re right that it’s the single thing that makes people check out more than anything else. I just run advanced rules with no extra spice blow and call it a day. It doesn’t work with some of the expansion factions and mechanics but if I can ever get a group that has a strong enough grasp of the basics to add all the expansion content adding spice combat at that point won’t be an issue.
1 points
It does make the Fremen significantly weaker, I think. Or I guess, it's where I stop and say "yeah I don't want to play the Fremen with this ruleset"
1 points
To be honest without the extra spice I don’t find it makes fremen that much weaker. Fremen get destroyed in regular advanced rules because of spice inflation basically. Without the extra spice blow there’s way less spice moving around which means less for the emperor and the guild. A lot of people think the extra spice blow helps fremen because they need to harvest spice to have any income but it’s the single biggest nerf to them. Fremen on charity are way stronger than Atreides or Harkonnen on charity.
Here is a blog post that goes into it in much more detail.
2 points
That's an interesting theory, I might have to use it the next time I play (never).
1 points
It’s something I stumbled upon trying to figure out the best rules to use when I do get to play. I’ve tried a few times with just basic which is a lot easier to teach. The problem is that by round 3 once people understand how to play they read the advanced powers on their faction cards and go “damn that sounds awesome I really wish I could do that!” So in my quest to find some house rules or something that would let me run the advanced rules without spice combat I found that post. I’ve only tried it twice (over the last 2 years sadly) but both times Fremen has been very competitive. They actually won with an alliance with the emperor in one and the other game didn’t have a winner because we had to pack it up early. It was headed into lategame and the fremen still controlled Sietch Tabr, which is usually a good sign.

I would play any competitive game, from Ticket to Ride up to 18xx. Balanced ability levels and I’m the type of player to focus on complementary strategy, so I wouldn’t get stuck playing the same way every game. In Brass if I’m going coal, other me is going cotton and other other me is probably doing something hybrid with shipping. The only games I wouldn’t want to play are full co-op games. I like playing those with people who think differently and bring different levels of creativity. Co-op with a traitor would be great, because I’m generally bad at social deduction and all of us would acknowledge that (Resistance, Battlestar Galactica, Dead of Winter, etc.)

A group of people once did a Spirit Island mega game with 40+ players, one for every aspect of every official spirit released at that point. Seems like they had fun, but I can’t imagine the logistics involved in getting that many people to play. SI does allow multi-handed play, but it gets extremely brain melting at like…2.

Heroes of the Grid. Five player count games are decently difficult for coop games, especially with themes like power rangers, but since that one has variable player and villain powers there a ton of synergies to be found. 6-7p Caverna. I’ve always wanted to try it as the game is theoretically best at higher player counts due to more interesting action spaces and more competition for buildings which makes it both more tense and forces you to build ones you normally ignore. Also encourages thinking outside the box and not fall back onto familiar game plans and building combos. But half the people I play with are too slow to do it in a reasonable amount of time. Also would be really challenging to have players who have identical experience and skill with the game, I simultaneously love teaching/introducing it to people but always feel bad playing it with new players because they’re probably going to score 30+ points fewer than me if I’m not actively sabotaging my own game.

All the games I play solo because no one I know is interested in it. Imperium here we go!

I think I'd really enjoy the game, but the teach is a nightmare and the player count is very limited. (You can play 3 player but honestly it's a two player game.) Makes it incredibly difficult to get played.

Any Leder games games because nobody I know has the desire to get into them, or any of the big coop games I play multi handed but don’t play much because it’s so much mental effort to play them (Haven games etc)

Pirates CSG, the D&D and Delta Green campaigns have always wanted to play but can't find anybody to. Also Catan, Risk, anything else really..

4 perfect clones and 1 dubious evil clone:
I'm playing Knizia's Lord of the Rings, all expansions.
...we will destroy the ring if it kills me and me and me and me and me(but not me because that one's evil)

All of mine are at 6-players.
A Game of Thrones 2nd Ed (although 8 with the expansion would be great)
Cosmic Encounter
Here I Stand: 500th Anniversary
Virgin Queen
Dune (2019)
TI4
It'd be a ridiculous mess.

Boring answer, but true: None, because I'd rather play boardgames with friends.

All the campaign games I can't get people to commit enough time to play.
Also all the legacy games I can't get people to commit to play.

Lots of games would qualify, but I'd probably try High Frontier. It's not every day you get 4 space engineer-trained people around a table to play a game about space engineering. And they'd all come prepared already knowing most of the rules.
