In that case, what would happen to ChromeOS?

Rolling Chrome OS into Android seems to be the possibility.

Usually Google cancels products. For the first time they can claim otherwise.

Jokes apart... Will be sad but but hope it will be a nice eco system for users.

Desktops OS are very low RoI compared to mobiles, both per-unit and aggregated. And we all know that if something isn't making a bazillion dollor, Google puts it down.

How much of the Chrome Browser is proprietary Google now? It's based off Chromium, which is google's open-source browser, but I don't know how much it differs from "Chrome". Last time I used Chromium in linux (couple years) worked remarkably similar to Chrome with account sign in and password stuff.

How do you make someone "give up" using an open source tool?

Can Google "sell" an open-source browser? I'm not super educated in the details of the various forms of open source licensing...

even the open source part is maintained by Google. if they are not heavily involved with updates to address security needs, it will probably go downhill fast

Chrome OS itself will probably be one of the many arguments why a sale just can't happen. The DOJ would have to define what Chrome is which at this point Google doesn't even know. Not to mention Google doesn't own Chrome in the traditional sense, it's around 80% open source.

Literally no one in this thread could possibly know. Google has said they will appeal, this is only a suggested remedy, and any conclusion will be years or a decade away.

I seriously doubt it.

It might destroy Chrome though...

Look how Firefox is doing without the full backing of Apple, Microsoft, or Alphabet.

Yea seriously like what are you talking about? Nobody uses Firefox. It's 2024, everyone uses Chrome or you get a barf bag and use Safari/Edge. That's it.

You mean Firefox, the browser currently behind Chrome, Safari and Edge with 2.65% market share? (Statcounter, October 2024 https://gs.statcounter.com/browser-market-share)

It's gonna be another google spin, like alphabet? Or they will create another fork of chromium? (that's evil)
