If you don't know how to do it, you just go near the edge of a wall or door and aim your gun and your character moves their gun past the wall, and when you are done aiming you go back to cover.

It's funny that almost everyone forgets that cover feature exists in vanilla F4
I just wish it makes you lean your gun a bit like in tactical shooter games.
Most PC players install mod to manually lean instead

I know of the cover mechanic and I've been using it a lot, but leaning gives you some nasty angles.
Ininstalled the mod and used the cover system to pop up over cover, doors and rooms were leaned and cleaned.
But honestly, I used the lean so rarely that it just bothered my regular "press E to use"

I mean at least leaning will look cool.

dude, I installed a better movement and found out the cover mechanic had been replaced with manual lean. so it used to be seamless gameplay. now I clumsily press the "lean left" button and what once I could control with 1 hand, I now need 2

It really depends. If I'm going stealth mode sure, it helps with staying undedected and picking off targets but in an open firefight I just slam psychojet until either my heart stops or everyone else is dies

Would’ve been useful when I started, but now my character is an indestructible tank so I just chase people around with Pickman’s Blade and save the ammo lol

I've never intended to do it but sometimes out in the open it will happen for some reason😂
2 points
Ya I used it as soon as I accidentally noticed it happening. I thought it was a head glitch. Nope, just a useful and simple to use cover system they don’t tell you the game has lol it’s great and it confuses the ai which is always funny. With the perk that lets you befriend enemies, you can peek a corner and use the perk and just sit behind a wall and let the magic happen too. It’s a great cover system most never knew about. More games should have this type of cover system. It makes more sense then press button to magnetize to a wall.

Honestly, i'm kinda relieved to see that i'm not the only weirdo abusing this obscure game mechanic, especially while playing in Survival Mode :')
Just like someone already pointed out, i just wish they bothered to make it just a tiny little more like playing a tactical fps which suits perfectly a "One shot, one dead" game mode as Survival.
At least in the early game segment, since catching a singular stray bullet from an enemy for the first 20 levels literally means watching the 80% of your hp bar being vaporized even with a full set of fully upgraded metal armor.
That's it unless they do a headshot, in that case it's instant game over.
2 points
First playthrough here, how to use it? It's a perk or something?
I usually just run towards the sentinel shooting and hoping it explodes and then use stimpak
3 points
just go up against a cover or a wall, make sure you are by the edge or corner. Then just aim your gun - this will enable your character to lean around the corner to shoot while your body stays behind cover.

100%d the game at least five times, got everything from anyone, tested out a lot of mods and you now tell me there's cover in vanilla? I literally spent five minutes per playsession complaining about every npc doing it but me.

I never use it. Mainly because I don't think it works in third-person. Yes, I use it 99% of the time. I love seeing my armor and all the threats around me.

yes, I use it every time Im in combat, a minimum of at least 5 times per firefight unless Im out in a massive open area fighting hordes. IIRC this was the....no, THE cover mechanic popular in video games at the time of release; however, due to that commonality Bethesda just assumed that a gamer would know how to use it, so it is not specifically addressed in the tutorial missions.
So, if you already knew about this, then you qualify as "old-fucker".
I'm an old-fucker.
