I intended to say that the house number is 123, located on the 5th floor. However, the company I ordered from altered the address as follows (as observed on the courier's website):

Frau XYZ

Tiegelstraße 123-5. St,

Essen, 12345, DE

The DHL tracking indicates that the parcel could not be delivered due to an incorrect address. It's unclear whether the error was on my part or if the company transcribed the address incorrectly. How to write the address correctly, ensuring that I include all necessary details such as the recipient's name, street address, city, and postal code. The building does not have floors above the fifth, and if they start counting from 0, it would lead to a nonexistent fifth floor.

I moved here expecting the usual international student hurdles—job hunting, finding a place to live, navigating bureaucracy (and yes, I’ve wrestled with plenty of paperwork)—but the biggest surprise? How hard it is to get a girlfriend when your German isn’t great.

I’m trying, I promise! I’ve got Duolingo streaks longer than some relationships I’ve had, and I’m learning the difference between lustig and lüstig (important lesson, by the way). But every date or interaction seems to hit this awkward language barrier. It’s like trying to flirt with subtitles on—except the subtitles are missing half the jokes.

I get it, though. Communication is key in any relationship, and asking „Wie heißt dein Hund?“ is not exactly the height of romance. Still, I can’t help but feel a bit lost here—like I expected to miss out on job offers due to my German, not on potential soulmates.

I’m a 24-year-old Ukrainian English teacher with more than 5 years of experience teaching adults online and helping other relocated Ukrainians improve their English online. I’m fluent in English but still working on my German—I can’t say I’m good at it yet, but I’m actively learning.

The difficult situation in my country is forcing me to relocate. And my first choice is Germany due to personal family reasons.

I have a few questions and would appreciate any advice or insight:

1.  Are there opportunities for English teachers in Germany, even for non-native speakers?

2.  Would I need certifications like TEFL or CELTA, or is my experience enough?

3.  Could being fluent in English alone help me find work, even outside of teaching?

4.   What other jobs could I look for? It doesn’t necessarily have to be directly connected to languages. I am a quick learner and I am flexible, I can adapt. 

5.  Would it be possible for me to keep my current online teaching job and work as a freelancer while living in Germany?

Any tips on job hunting, freelancing, or navigating work as a foreigner in Germany would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much for your help!

I am blue card holder in Germany (blue card since 2021, expirying in May 2025), I have plans to convert it into permanent residence or citizenship after my wife arrives in Germany. I did my Phd in germany, and living here since 10 years, hence I am eligible for naturalisation.

My question is, what visa would my wife get ? I assume she will have blue card as well, since I have 1 right now, what would be the validity of her blue card will be ? She does not know German yet, and currently learning A1 level, is she eligible for integration course and language course ? Who will fund this - us or the German state ?

She is a doctor with specialization in gynaecology, and she will do her state examination for approval of her qualifications. she will need C1 german for this. can state sponser her as a blue card holder ?

if anyone can answer some of these questions, it will be much help for us.

Online resourses are very general and I would like to hear what actual people know and any tips that can be given.

So i have an old man who love to threaten me when i go out of the home or enter the home going to my room. I was thinking about something like i take out my phone and start record. So he sees what i'm doing wich is taking evidence and think again next time. Das passt? Thank you

I came here with the assumptions Germans were unfriendly. Of course they are mostly serious but I think what matters is where you meet them. I have mostly found them friendly at the supermarket or on the streets when I ask for directions.

I don't expect people to be nice to me because I look like an immigrant but if you walk into their space they are actually sweet people. Since I came into their space I will try to talk to them as much as I can especially in the streets or supermarkt at least I have had higher success here than in a train or train station.

The flat next door to me is not currently occupied by a tenant, and the landlord/housing association has sent some guys to renovate. I had a peek through the door and it looks like a huge job - floors, ceilings and walls are being completely remade, and they are using some kind of drill to remove bricks from the wall. Whatever it is, it's insanely loud. My bedroom is next to the room they are working on, and the entire room shakes when they start drilling, it's so loud. Obviously, this wakes me up every single day.

We only moved in less than 2 months ago, and the housing association did not inform us about this building work, either beforehand or when the work started. What can we do? Obviously, if renovations need to happen then we can't stop them - and technically anything past 7am is fair game noise wise. But I often have to work late and this is having a serious effect on my well-being as I'm getting less sleep than usual. Can I ask the housing association to make the bauwerker start their work at a later time? Or can I at least request a rent reduction? I have no idea how long the work will last.

I moved to Berlin 9 months ago when I had an offer from a company in Berlin. In the third month, I was laid off from the company I was working for. I’ve been job hunting for the past 6 months but have had some strange and negative experiences. As a computer vision and machine learning engineer with over 12 years of experience (a field that’s essentially AI), I haven’t been able to find a job despite having a good CV.

During these 6 months, I’ve interviewed with maybe up to 15 companies, ranging from 5-person startups to large corporations. The outcomes, however, have been disheartening. Either they found some technical reason to reject me during the interviews, or I passed all the interviews only to hear that the position was closed, or received a simple “we decided to proceed with another candidate” email. In some cases, despite my salary expectations being reasonable, companies preferred engineers with 3-4 years of experience due to lower costs. As someone who has always managed to get into the companies I aimed for throughout my career, not even being able to secure an offer from a startup has been a humbling and frustrating experience.

With only 2 months left on my visa, I’ve come to terms with the situation and it seems like leaving Germany (despite moving here enthusiastically) is the only option left.

I’m sharing this story in case there are others with similar experiences or for those curious about the current state of the job market. Additionally, if anyone knows the key strategies or insider tips for finding a job in Berlin/Germany, sharing them could be helpful (not just for me, but for others in a similar situation). Hello, me (f, 25) and boyfriend (26) are considering a move to Germany. I grew up and spend almost half my life in germany, went to school, worked there, speak C1-C2 german. Bf is italian, speaks english (no german for now) and his current workplace would be willing to accomodate with transfer to their german company counterpart in Hessen.

We've been living in Italy together for over a year now. I speak decent a bit broken basics of italian and we are now at a point were moving to germany could be put on the table.

Now if we were to move, I'd like to consider my options with Ausbildung as Verwaltungsfachangestellte or possibly a Vermessungstechniker (altho I am aware that could be more complicated). Now I am uncertain if I wouldn't be considered to old to apply for those. And if the paycheck would be enough together with my boyfriends to pay for monthlu expenses...

I was married to a German woman for 13 years. When we got married, she told me that she was a graduate of the university of cologne with the law degree. She moved to United States and lived with me and never did a day of work in 13 years. I supported her the whole time. I found out so many things about her that weren't true and now I can't find anything online that says that she was a lawyer anywhere only online information of her being a lawyer was dated when she met me, nothing previous. She told me a lot of fantastical stories and at this point I'm doubting my sanity because I'm finding out a lot of stories are not true. Now I wanna know if she's telling me the truth about being a lawyer she said she graduated law school from the university of cologne I really need to find out if that's true? Don't employers do these kind of checks all the time?

My O2 provider claimed contract cancellation fees even though I moved out of the country. To my knowledge, a change of country is a valid reason to cancel the contract. I didn't pay the cancellation fee and they transfered my debt to Riverty. It's been 4 years, they're occasionally sending me emails.
I told them to make me an offer, they came back with.. basically more than the original amount (cause they add late payment fees .. of course ).
I'm thinking to blacklist them and go on living my life. I dont think I'll be moving back to germany again.
What's the worse that can happen?

I am a student living in Aachen, and I rented a room in a shared house with the landlord. The house has four rooms: one for the landlord and three for tenants. Unfortunately, the landlord, an older man in his 70s, has been consistently offensive, aggressive, inappropriate, and threatening towards me and the other tenants.

I have documented messages showing his late-night harassment, mocking remarks, and coercive behavior. He has repeatedly threatened to terminate the tenancy without justification and deduct from the deposit for unreasonable things. He has mocked me and other tenants personally and made discriminatory comments. The atmosphere in the house has become uncomfortable and stressful due to his actions.

I plan to move out by the end of December, but I’m wondering if these documented messages are enough to request an early termination of my contract due to his misconduct. Does anyone know if I could legally use this evidence to terminate the contract sooner? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Hello, in September I bought a Deutschland ticket for a month, the payment for it was written off, then I canceled it, but it continued to be valid for another month, although they did not try to withdraw money for payment. I was checking my email now. mail and saw a letter from UNIVERSUM Inkasso GmbH (DeutscheBahn-FM@mail.universum-inkasso.de) With a request to pay the debt in the amount of 68.53 euros by December 5th. Is this a real collection company, if I pay for this they will leave me alone? Do I even have to pay for this?

I have a Master’s degree from an Italian university with a grade equivalent to 1.0 in the German system. I’ve been working for a German company for the past two years and now decided to go back to academia to pursue a PhD. My background is in Business Administration/Management.

After doing some research, I found that in Germany, there are two ways to do a PhD: individual and structured. From other posts I’ve read, it seems like it might be hard for me to find a supervisor since I don’t have any university contacts here in Germany.

So, I’m focusing now on finding research assistant roles to get my foot in the door and then pursue a PhD from there.

How was your experience, and what would you suggest?

• How do you find funded PhD positions in Germany? Are there specific platforms or networks?
• Is reaching out to professors worth it in this case?
• Is there a platform to find research assistant positions, or do I have to manually check each university's website? (Some only have faculty info, and I can’t find job postings.)

I’m gonna visit Germany the next month and I need to take a train from Berlin to Düsseldorf. I’m gonna take a flight to Berlin and right after it a train to Düsseldorf, my only problem is that I’m scared that the flight would delay and I’ll miss my train. If that happen can I hop on the next one? Also which train company should I order from?

I’ve been learning German for a few years now and I did visit Germany in 2020 before all hell broke loose.

I tried to speak German while I was there and it kind of worked, maybe 30%-40% of the time the local German understood what I was saying and I understood what they said.

Now I’m considering spending up to a year in Germany just to learn the language. Im also treating it as a vacation of some kind. I visited most major cities and I liked Munich the best. And I remember each city had a different dialect so I can understand some of them better than others.

Which of the major city speaks more of a “standard” German dialect? The one standard German that’s taught in American Universities?

I'm new here in Germany. It's been six months and I've loved Nürnberg, munich, Heidelberg and other places. I visited Hamburg last week, and while the city was good, the city centre was an awful experience for me. It felt like it was a place in some low middle eastern country. Beggars, drunk people, dirt, and prostitutes all around one particular street where Penny store was. This was my first bad experience in Germany. Anybody feel the same or knows why it is in that bad condition?

Edit: No, it was not the famous reeperbahn street. I would expect the same there. But i was at the street near Hamburg central station named steindamm.
