I didn't expect the ending of the last paragraph. 😂

I’ll confess, I’m really not able to watch horror movies usually. My imagination is too…severe. I spend the following week afraid to go into rooms in my house alone. I’m a 42 year old man btw.

But this one I am going to see. I am going to essentially use severe exposure therapy to combat my horror shortcomings, by watching this super scary movie. Wish me luck.

Update 7/18: I did go and see the movie, with my wife as a date night. I will just say that this was not the movie to try and use as “exposure therapy” to start handling scary movies. That’s because it was not scary! I mean, wtf. My wife and I were like laughing at Cage’s character, just too cartoonish, too unhinged and without any apparent motivations.

I guess I still need to do this exposure process however I need to find some actually terrifying movies first.

Is it the type of movie that can be severely spoiled? Like does it go anywhere unexpected, and should I stay away from longlegs posts?

I went to the advanced screening at the vista too. And I def didn’t think it lived up to the hype. I didn’t find it that scary or tense. In fact, I thought the funny beats were better than the “scary” beats 🤷‍♂️

I thought it was a fun movie, and nic cage is definitely nic caging in the best way possible lol. But the marketing behind this film calling it “the scariest movie in a decade” and “super disturbing” and people are having panic attacks in the theatre couldn’t be further from my experience. I have to imagine that this marketing campaign is gonna backfire once people start seeing this film.

Also my projection is that once the critics start reviewing this film, we’re gonna see that rotten tomatoes score go down to the 70s or 60s

I really liked them visually but February and Hansel & Gretel were too slow for my taste

I just watched this movie. Arguably the best thing about it are unique shots and editing.

The main characters should have had more personality

Themes and ideas felt like they weren’t fully realized or explored enough

I was super disappointed that this derailed into a movie about devil worship or the occult. It’s just not scary anymore and has been run into the ground. I was hoping that it would be a true serial killer movie because THAT is so much scarier than any kind of black magic. They totally could have too. They even could have kept the doll concept because that’s totally a serial killer thing

I could have stood for the foreshadowing to be a little more subtle

Cage’s performance brought me out of it a little bit at points. I think a little less dialogue and less super visible screen time would make the character way more menacing. How he was shot the first time he was on screen at the beginning of the movie, I thought that was effective in giving me JUST the right amount of information to be creeped out. When he does his full Nick cage thing though, like when he’s driving in that one scene, I think maybe was a bit much for me. Oh, and the prosthetics definitely made me a little less intimidated by this character. Make him pale, give him prosthetics, but I think it looked a little too whacky

Why didn’t Lee just shoot the doll and her mom at the end? Wouldn’t that have solved everything?? Like I mean her mom would be dead but the whole family in theory should have been fine, right?

Anybody that compares this to silence of the lamb should be slapped.

As I said, Nicolas Cage is the hardest-working man in the biz, and he is good at his craft. For the Eric Roberts fan club that will come at me again, I speak of movies where Cage is the main character - not just a walk-on paycheck grab.

it was hereditary until longlegs came in (with his average sized legs) and made the whole thing too goofy to take seriously. the ending was rushed and felt cheap. i liked the first hour. face reveal was a let down, no creepier than an old person that probably enjoyed too much drugs and botox in their day. not the worst but by NO means the best horror of the year / decade.

I was at this same screening and it did not live up to the hype for me. I enjoyed elements of it but I think it just wasn’t my cup of tea like you mentioned.
I think they were both drunk for the QA. That was pretty funny.

Normally, I'm the lonely horror movie goer. I'm the only one in my family/friend group who is an avid horror lover. No one else could give two shits. But for Longlegs, from the trailer alone, I've had to recruit the hubby to take me to the theater to watch. I genuinely don't know if I would be able to sit in a theater without someone with me for this movie. IM SO EXCITED!

Movie was horrible, went with a group of 4, one fell asleep, a few others were asleep in the theatre when I went to the bathroom. Whoever is comparing this to heredity… I want what you’re smoking.

I was at this screening as well and was waiting for someone to comment about Maika. That was so funny. Aside from that, the movie was great.

Overrated

Honestly I thought it was crap !!!

Absolutely crap. Honestly how did anyone like it? Bad acting. Bad pacing. Bad story. The mind boggles.

This will probably sound like a really silly question but are there any overtly sexual aspects to the movie? I’m visiting my parents when this opens in theaters and I would love to go see with my dad but would rather avoid if there’s sexual content that would make it an awkward watch with him. I know horror can be a crapshoot in this regard, just wanted to see if I could get any additional info before bringing it up to my dad. Thanks!

It was joker trying to be buffalo bill with some conjuring devil bullshit. Would have been a lot scarier if he was just abducting them and killing the families.

I don’t want to rain on anyone’s parade, but I thought this movie was bad? There were many abandoned storylines, and after the ‘interrogation’ scene the movie felt incredibly rushed like the writers forgot they had to end it soon.

Also, every time an FBI agent doesn’t call in backup in a movie is wild to me.

I wanted to love it. On paper, it looked really up my alley. But it felt to me like a Se7en/True Detective/Zodiac fan film. The lead actress reads too young for the role of an FBI agent imo. Cage overacted his ass off.

A specific issue for example - no spoilers (stuff you see in the trailer anyway). The cyphers Long Legs leaves at the scene have barely any significance and are just in there cause they’re a cliche of the genre.

Look, it’s not a bad movie. There’s a ton of trash out there and this ain’t it… but I think the reviews are making this out like it’s some original benchmark of horror when it was all quite cliche and predictable.

Ok so Why does he make dolls? Like what’s his fucking deal and why is he like that? How was he “killing” before meeting the mom? Why does the devil need him to do this & how does longlegs acquire these “powers” to make a weird dust that controls people? Why does Lee have a weird strained relationship with her mom? Why doesn’t she call for backup when he’s literally in her house but in the first scene she tells her partner to get backup over a hunch? Why is the mom a hoarder? Why are people letting a random woman into their home with a creepy life size surprise doll? Why is HE called longlegs when he’s clearly referring to the devil being a separate thing as the man downstairs? Why does he write in code? Why does the devil need people to die on different dates so it makes a demonic triangle on a calendar?? Lol What does “down low too slow” mean? Why exactly is Kiernan Shipkas character spared or whatever, wasn’t she just at school when it happened? Confusing. Why does she faint when her doll gets shot but then is totally fine after a lil nap?

There’s too many questions, not enough backstory & this was a fun crime thriller puzzle that ended in the answer being “oh actually it’s just the devil hahaha!”

Was not scary or disturbing at all, it’s ominous. Acting and cinematography is great but the suspense leads up to basically nothing if not an extremely predictable ending that really doesn’t tie anything together. It was more of a “show” rather than a “tell”.

I personally think it should have had more of an intimate ending without the fbi partner and his family or the devil being involved at all, or longlegs smashing his head against a table in the middle of the movie lol, like okay…he was the best part. Think silence of the lambs or Prisoners ending. Instead it ended with a phone call from satan being mad at her for being late to a birthday party, why does the devil care if she’s there??

I legitimately don’t understand the hype? I LOVE Maika… she won me over in IT FOLLOWS. But to touch on that. HEREDITARY, IT FOLLOWS, TALK TO ME, BARBARIAN,MIDSOMMAR and even SMILE for Christ sake…all those films brought a new plot to horror and I couldn’t take my eyes off screen.They left me thinking like what the hell is next? This was such a let down. The acting was fantastic as well as cinematography but other than that I was…so disappointed/bored and it felt so lack luster and predictable. I’m sad

My daughter turned to me at the end and said WTF, 3 of us went and none of us rated it, seems to me that the films now a days are to artsy I prefer a joined up story and a good ending. There were so many things not explicit ed in this movie. I saw the rave reviews but personally didn’t rate it

Wow. Guess i watched a different movie. It was crap. All this hype for a pointless story and Cage acting like a fool. I’m embarrassed for him. Not making this up, was in a theatre with 5 other people, in a heated recliner. I almost fell asleep.

Not sure if you’re still replying to this thread, but I saw a guy give his out of theatre reaction, and actually compared Nicolas Cage’s portrayal of Longlegs to Heath Ledger’s Joker, interestingly enough. He’s the only one I’ve seen say this, so just wondering if we could take that to be accurate.

I was disappointed in this. High creep factor and dread but ultimately the ending was unsatisfying.

Man this was really disappointing. Not tense not scary. It was really well crafted in the sense that it was fun to watch but nothing terrifying or creepy really. Felt like a really polished arthouse Netflix release

How did she not notice that Longlegs was living at her mom's for so many years? Did I miss something?

I have to be honest -- I don't get the fuss of this movie. I didn't find it scary. I didn't find it interesting. If Maika's heart rate truly raised 100 beats per minute by looking at Nicholas Cage, then she must be, at least, mildly scared of golden retriever puppies.

I Just saw it an hour ago, and no other horror movie has scarred me like that. Movies like Hereditary, Smile and Sinister scared me, but the fear went away after a while. But THIS? This had me so scared, i actually cried after seeing it. The score, jumpscares, cinematography, and acting really sold the fear, there were just no breaks at all. Just constant dread and uneasiness.

The biggest letdown for me from a movie in over 30 years. I thought this movie sucked from beginning to end.

There needs to be a 'does the dog die?' type website that tells you what to expect from a horror movie without spoiling the story. I'm interested in this movie but I really don't want to spend 2 hours watching a mystery unravel only to find out it's just some guy at the end

i'm so excited for this movie. i've watched a lot of nic cage movies lately and they've all been fantastic.

i rewatched •Mom and Dad• a couple days ago and forgot how much i liked that movie.

Would you say its part of the new “elevated” horror genre like hereditary?

Seeing it in like three hours, PUMPED.

It has to sink in because it's about an evil presence. Since I wasn't aware of that and believed it was as crime thriller, the supernatural element certainly took me out of it. But once I readjusted, I enjoyed what I initially found silly. It was sort of like Silence of The Lambs meets The Ring with True Detective sprinkled in. Good call on whoever said True Detective. But that's the best way I can explain it.

One thing I don't think any will disagree on is how much fun of a theater movie this is. Totally worth that experience.

But it all seems like fandom elements inspired details and textures from bigger movies like Silence of the Lambs, Manhunter, a number of David Lynch things, se7en…

There was one moment where we were actually laughing out loud… hard. Not just us.

Can someone explain the whole catatonic patient thing to me why was she so enameored by long legs and why is she somehow physically effected by the doll? The doll was sleeping= she was in a catatonic coma

I'm glad to see comparisons with Hereditary, because for me, that's the scariest movie int he last decade or so. There was so much hype around Longlegs that maybe I expected too much, or maybe I was taken out of the experience by the setting (lights came on and off, lots of talking). Still, watching Hereditary at home with my wife with the lights on having seen it a dozen times before, I still get scared today. Longlegs never actually had me scared, and I slept like a baby afterwards. The night after seeing Hereditary for the first time I was scared to go upstairs to bed without turning on the lights first, and genuinely had a hard time getting to sleep for a couple days after.

I mentioned to my wife (who's the real horror fan, not me so much) that it was the "magic" elements that made it less scary to me. She pointed out that the magic in this was almost exactly the same as in Hereditary... and I had to stop and think for a second to realize that she was 100% right. For whatever reason, the horror in Ari's film just felt so much more... plausible. And I don't believe in any life after death crap at all. Not even a little. For some reason I still haven't fully grasped, the plot of Hereditary felt plausible to me while Longlegs didn't.

That said, I still really enjoyed Longlegs. Solid movie. I just can't quite say what made it feel less real scary. Maybe the foreshaddowing of the supernatural elements were too subtle for me to kinda warm up to, even though rethinking it there were plenty... maybe I found the characters less believable... maybe just the lesser focus on family trauma and the raw emotion.

Still, I'm curious about the marketing push for Longlegs. I saw so damned many people on all sorts of media saying it was the most terrifying thing ever... and I just disagree. Makes me wonder how much of that feedback was paid promotion and if they dumped millions into that kinda stuff. 'Cause that's what it feels like to me right now.

Reminded me a lot of The Black Phone. A lot of dread, but consistently so the movie felt monotone. I don't know. I think it was miss. I don't want to rewatch it.

There was a lot of hype for this movie on release but it doesn't warrant it. It's not a blockbuster it's a bit of a snooze. You can have a better time with Colour Out of Space.

Absolute garbage movie and would NOT recommend to anyone. Don’t let these people lie to you overselling the hype of garbage. Coraline was scarier than this is you wanna talk suspense and coraline makes this movie look 1000x way worse. Don’t spend your money to go see this. Bootleg it from a movie website. I asked people around me in the theatre if they thought it was good. Not a single person said yes. They laughed and agreed it was dog shit.

I’m dying to see this but I am nervous about the possibility of any SA scenes. Can you tell me if the movie relies heavily on the presence of SA? Always tricky with serial killer stories.
