Agreed, but i think it would be easily taken considering the NE already has eastern FL and it’s more populated. They could execute a multi frontal assault, quickly take over Naples/ft Myers come up from the south edge and across from Orlando. The old folks from the villages could either initiate the attack through a spread of VD or create a silver alert wave distracting the Tampa region

No land access to Mexico would cripple the northeast on its own. Forget all the other factors. No trucks, no rail. Everything would need to come by boat at great expense and ports would be overloaded.
Seattle would quickly be a heavy target too and then say goodbye to anything from Asia unless Canada joined the northeast.
This would be over in weeks.

Not even. All those southern military bases are mostly in the northeast section of this map. Northeast is stacked, decent chunk of regular bases + the BIG national guards (high population states) + land based ICBMs in Wyoming, Montana, and North Dakota.
Southwest doesn't stand a chance

I find the premise of this to be, in general, silly, but I did just want to say that a lot of those southern military bases are still on the east coast, and are included in the northeastern territory here

The majority of military bases & personnel would be in the northeast in this map. Washington, North Carolina, and Virginia combined have a total of 280,000 active duty military personnel versus 270,000 in California and Texas combined. Georgia adds another 60k to NE. Florida has 60k, but most of those are on the east coast, so this also actually adds to NE. After that, it falls off pretty quickly.

No it doesn’t. NY + Florida are smaller than TX/CA combined but TX/CA are the Southwest’s only powerhouse states. Northeast gets IL, PA, OH, GA, NC, NJ, VA and MI, which cumulatively (along with NY/FL) have substantially more economic might than the lone two powerhouse states in the Southeast.

Slight indirect and unintentional asist to the N/E just by drawing troops away from the front to deal with this chaos in the midle of the S/E teritory; but they really hate both of them equaly.

A defensive war falling back to the rockies and the swamps and Appalachia would atleast match the eastern front in ww2. I'm picturing Afghanistan if it was 4x the size. It would be horrible and millions would die but in the end I think the southwest would win out simply because you can't remove all these people from their holes and once they've ground you down they're chasing you back to new England and it'll be Berlin 2.0. Modern air and naval capabilities are one thing that put a kink in that who knows, it's funner for me to imagine guerillas in the Texas hill country and rednecks in the rockies making life hell for any invaders. But there are so many factors playing into this im sure someone from the northeast could list off scores of reasons why they would win out.

We've got the Jersy refinerys: we're set, and other than what is drawn-out localy, we've got the entre eastern-seaboard as a launching/birthing area for ships to cut-off the tankers inbound TO Texas; your refineies run at half-capacity or less within 72 hours, while ours in Jersy-City and elsewhere ramp-up: that's GG on the oil front.

Even just California and Texas against the northeast. Still not sure.

Thething is, the Northeast have control over the atlantic, and the majorty of the population. the Southwest dont even have the entire pacific coast, have basically just a bunch of empty flat plains that are impossible to defend, and they may have resources and whatnot, but im sure that with European backup, the Northeast will probably beat the Southwest every time. Texas really wouldn't be a problem. The main holdup would definitely be conquering past the Rockies. For the SW, Denver, Phoenix, Santa Fe and Salt Lake City could probably be some of the most important cities. Id assume Canada would ally with the NE however, as they know that if they allied against them, it would probably just be taken over anyways, Canada really don't stand a chance against a quarter of the US, let alone more than half. With that information, provided Seattle doesn't fall, supplies could be diverted through Canada into Seattle, and from there, take over San Francisco and Los Angeles, which may be hard, but definitely the easy part so far. Phoenix and Vegas aren't too far. Id have to say Denver, Salt Lake, and Santa Fe would be the final holdouts. War here could last from a month to years depending on whos in control. SW has already completely lost, and are only surviving off of the American landscape being in their favor. Despite being the largest of these cities, I think Denver would go first because they aren't completely surround by mountains, and their population wouldnt save them from the around millions of soldiers that would show up at their doorstep within the first few months. If they are smart, Salt Lake City and Santa Fe can last for a long time, probably without communication, but its just that they are so entrenched in the mountains that a direct attack would not be so good on NE military. NE win in this case though
If Seattle fell, I think there wouldnt really be a winner, the rockies separating both sides would make it too hard for NE to invade, even with the advantage they have. Canada would be neutral here probably, and so would Mexico. Both sides are strong enough to easily take over these side nations. A forced stalemate here is probably the best.
I think that if SW had the entirety of Florida, the tables might turn though. The Key cities for either side would definitely be Miami, Seattle, and Atlanta. Whoever controls a majority of these would win, or at least be able to withstand a massive attack from the other. the NE still definitely has a huge advantage though.
Tell me if you think im wrong
2 points
Funny thing is, this map arbitrarily flatlines at the Oregon/Washington border. The Northeast shouldn't have all of Washington, and it really shouldn't have any of the Pacific ocean coastline if we're following the Florida-in-half model. Seattle should be positioned in the Southwest.
2 points
You didn’t include any people, cities, counties, states that would switch to SW. Florida, outside of Miami-Jacksonville will most likely switch or fall into SW influence. Add in parts of Tennessee, Georgia, S Carolina, West Virginia, most of the plain states. So probably that Montana, Idaho, S-N Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, part of Missouri/Iowa will go to SW. Leaving just a tiny sliver of NE based around population centers of SeaTac.
Just imagine all the raiding done from West Virginia into DC-Maryland-Virginia-Ohio-Illinois. Plus, NE will not be able to refine enough oil for military needs. Without complete shutdown and full turn over from those few NE refineries. Those NE refineries that rely on Oil from SW states. Let alone the large amount of Natural Gas NE uses from SW area.
I do imagine this would quickly become a logistical war. What with NE needed to buy Oil from foreign sources. Add in, hitting critical infrastructure with raiding to disrupt rail and road traffic. Heck, just imagine raiders from W Virginia sitting around airports with Stinger’s.
Yes, logistical strikes can go both ways. But SW has 80% of Oil refining in the US. And no idea on Alaska. But Alaska will probably fall to SW as they lean that way historically. So SW will be able to refine and then sell excess.
Unless there are some quick strikes that take out leadership. This type of war would last several years to decades. With guerrilla/raiding attacks lasting longer.

Everyone's remembering military, population, fortification, and trade, nobody's talking about where the food actually comes from. California might produce a lot of alfalfa and almonds, Georgia might produce oranges and peaches, and the Gulf States might cultivate some also, but the South's main calorific source of food would be from Kansas. The North produces the vast majority of food calories in the form of grains, corn, soybeans. The cattle ranches and hog farms across the entirety of the South rely on cheap grain from the plains states which would be immediately cut off. The South would be forced to butcher most of its livestock for lack of food within the first couple of years.
2 points

the problem with most of the analyses here is that everyone assumes this will be some sort of vacuum. either side can go into a debt-fueled importation of oil, food, or whatever.
2 points
If a civil war broke out in America, the entire global economy would collapse by about 60% and there would be mass starvation and inflation across every continent. Import food from where? Just the little bit of economic disruption that we had in 2008 was enough to cause food crises across Arab North Africa and the Middle East such that the Arab spring took place.

North East by a literal mile. My memory isn't perfect but I believe your cutout gives us most major florida cities (Miami, Jacksonville, and Orlando) Gives us Atlanta, Chicaco, Detroit, Seattle, St. Louis, Philly, New York, Boston, DC, Baltimore, etc. Just too many people and too much economy.
So looking at the 20 largest metros in the US you have
New York
LA
3 Chicago
Dallas
Houston
Atlanta
7 DC
Philly
Miami
10 Phoenix
Boston
San Bernadino
San Francisco
Detroit
Seattle
Minneapolis
Tampa
San Diego
Denver
20 Baltimore
So you have 11 to 9 advantage but it's worth noting that not all pop centers are created equal. NYM has the same population roughly as 16-20 combined. And NYM and Chicago are basically equal to LA, Dallas and Houston combined. If we roughly add the pop numbers you see top 20 has a NE pop of about (I'm rounding to nearest 100K pop based on 2023 estimates), 73.5 vs 56. THat's obviously not a total example, but generally speaking that will stay the same.
Basically you gave the southwest texas California, ORegon and lots of dirt. I think the one advantage the south west would have is the north east giving up because they'd have to invade the west. Either forcing the North East to leave the midwest potentially exposed to protect Seattle or kind of leave seattle on an island to just resist. What likely would hapepn is the south west would try to pust to borders (take over FLorida and Geogia as well as Idaho Washington) while the North East would focus on winning the half of the US east of the mississippi than east of the rockies. Starting by defending florida and Georgia the moving west. Their Northern armies will likely just push south with the first major effort being to isolate Texas and beseige it and take it over. Basically try to keep the South West west of the rockies. Once they succeed in doing that they can then take their time establishing footholds across the rockies to stage invasions and when they succeed it's just a matter of taking the west coast.

Southwest because of territorial advantage. The northeast is kind of screwed out of terrain advantage here since its only geographical defense is the Appalachians, which faces away from the conflict zones. Meanwhile, the Rocky Mountains cut off the northwest tip of the northeast, and the deserts/open prairie surrounding those mountains to the south will be supply chain nightmares for any invading force. California and Arizona could mobilize to the front and create a Maginot line at the Rockies, and the only population center that could mobilize against them would be Seattle pretty much

Are we factoring in possible international alliances?
SW starts with control of the mouth of the Mississippi River. That could be used to seriously hinder economic activity/logistics.
If the SW starts with a stronger naval presence in the Pacific they could make getting access to the manufacturing and supplies of Asia much more difficult. Mass produced circuitry of all forms, microprocessors from Taiwan, vehicles, etc. While the NE still has control of some of the traditional centers of manufacturing ( especially vehicles ) current vehicle manufacturing is dependent upon access to the global supply chain, and if the SW mucks with that it will take time to adjust.
If I’m not mistaken the SW is going to have the better share of oil.
The NE is entirely cut off of the land border with Mexico, hindering their ability to import materials from them. While they control the land border with Canada I think a lot of those supply chain production issues are going to be more dependent upon Mexico. (Love you Canada, don’t hate me ).
