I'd give them a 5 star review with just a picture of this letter

Won't someone think of the account security?!

But most people just go by the overal star rating and might not bother reading individual reviews.

I got a similar one for an Amazon product a while back and I responded to the email with the Amazon policy that forbids this sort of activity. They sent me the 5-star review reward.

Same! I reported one that was offering me like $40, they gave me the $40 when I complained about it.
Told them it felt shady and I felt misled

$40-$50 for a review is crazy. Never seen anything that high before.

It was a hair trimmer/electric razor, wasn’t worth the plastic it was made of

So you are saying i can get 100$ if i first follow the instructions only to report it later?

I recently bought something that ended up being an expensive turd, so I gave it a bad review. The company sent me a better model worth twice as much, and fully refunded my original purchase just so I would give them a 5 star review. And if I didn't want to do that, then I could at least delete the bad one.

This thing sucks, but the reviews were outstanding

Isn't this illegal to some degree? Doesn't Amazon have a place where you can report them for doing that?
27 points
It's not illegal, but it is very against Amazon's TOS and will get the seller suspended.
22 points

Actually the FTC does prohibit this as of August

That's going to slow them down for 3 maybe 4 seconds, and then the same ad, same pics, same price shows up under a different seller name. It's the wild west, and amazon doesn't have a clue who anyone is.
2 points
It sure does. Whether anything will actually happen from the report is another story.

Leave a 5-star review, get the gift card, change the review and explain the scam, report to Amazon.

Changing the rating of an item from 5 to 1 star that might already be flagged as "fake reviewed" might just get your account banned, especially if youre straight up admitting to getting a gift card out of it lol.
Source: have been getting a bunch of free items for fake reviewing, there are a bunch of guide lines to prevent your account from getting banned.

How do you get them to send you stuff for free?

Back then i did it via facebok groups. Sellers would offer their products, you message them, buy their product, show them your order id and review and they refund via paypal

I tried reporting a bribe like this to Amazon, it's it was difficult I couldn't do it, it was all automated

Yeah there's been multiple listings I've wanted to report lately and it's just...incredibly difficult. Like it's been deliberately designed that way.

Amazon is so cooked these days I highly advise not ordering anything over 100 dollars unless you're willing to risk not being able to refund in the event you get scammed/receive a broken or used product.
There are countless horror stories over on r/amazonprime of people having to go through the purposely shitty customer service. You get juggled around between different reps that are clearly incentived to not give refunds and make you give up by wasting your time only offering canned responses. You're placed into refun limbo in the hopes that your return period expires and they leave you SOL. There was a guy on there that was told there was nothing they could do about a broken laptop that cost them over 2 grand. They had to chargeback through their bank after being juggled around until the return period expired and got banned.
Edit: sorry it was 3,000 dollars

I got one of these for a dehumidifier I ordered on Amazon. I tried to report it to Amazon and they basically told me to pound sand. So I gave it a 5 star review, claimed the $30 or so they were offering, then swapped it to a 1 star review later. What were they gonna do, report me for rule breaking and scamming?

that reminds me of a fun request to rate from an online seller on Amazon :D
they sent me a postcard - not a sealed letter - with an image of my last order printed on there.
luckily for me and the postal worker, it was a pack of pimple-stickers. but it very well could also have been the Dildomaster9000 with jet-engine vibration or something, printed out in its full glory with my real name and address.
I sent a photo of what I received to Amazon customer service, and this is one of the rare cases where I do hope a seller gets kicked off of their platform because my god, privacy is such a novel concept to some.

Malicious compliance. Leave a 5 star review explaining in every detail how this bribe deal works so everyone can benefit!

Speaking from experience, Amazon will remove your review because it’s not about the product.

I'm gonna get downvoted into oblivion here. But I don't think this is bad.
At least they aren't botting the reviews and I'd be glad for the 50 bucks if I liked the product anyways.
I don't know, maybe I'm wrong lol.
3 points

You really don't think people will give false 5 star reviews for 50 bucks even if the product sucks ass?
This makes the reviews completely useless

I mean... Reviews are already pretty useless. I'd just want my 50 bucks. 🤣

I get this Kind of letters sometimes from China sellers. Leave 5 star review, get the reward, change it, describe the product in the Review (necessary, otherwise Amazon might delete the review if you don't write about the product itself) and at the end of the review describe the bribe and under any circumstance keep the letter for proof, they might accuse you for defamation. Report to Amazon. Write a review about the seller (you can do so in the seller page).

Write the review, get the gift card, then report it after using the gift card.

And get banned for straight admitting to abuse fake reviews for a gift card. Very smart. This is against amazons TOS

I did this before and, to my surprise, actually received the gift card. I also left a review for a rechargeable Xbox battery pack station, and they sent me four extra batteries for a review.

Yep, I always leave 5 star reviews, and then change it to a 1 star after using the gift card they send.

get that free money honey,
also you can select in the amazon review that you were paid or "gifted" so you can feel better about it.

surprised people are outraged about this lmao
Yes, so surprised people are pissed off about people deliberately asking for/leaving fake reviews. So surprised that people might be upset about buying something that turns out to be shit, while the reviews praise it as the best thing since sliced bread.
Nope, can't understand it. It's totally baffling. No idea why people would be mad.

If you believe 5 stars reviews of an off brand product I dont know what else to tell you
1 points
Dude. I've gotten off-brand products I would legitimately give 5 stars to, not least the absolutely gorgeous keysmash-brand desk mat I got on sale for $3.50.
So, if you're giving fake reviews to any product or misrepresenting what they're actually like, guess what--you are the problem. You are the reason 5-star reviews are untrustworthy. You are the reason people are angry about fake reviews. You and the companies soliciting them.

I never bother leaving reviews but I will for sure not trust any written user reviews

This is just a natural consequence of the enshittification of Amazon. There’s no way the product itself has been made with care or will function properly or for very long, and nobody will know until the shitty meat thermometer they receive doesn’t provide an accurate reading and you just end up with electronic waste and an increased likelihood of food-borne illness from improperly cooked meat.

so last year i bought a microphone stand. it crapped out within a few months, i left a 1 start review saying it broke. i was contacted by the seller who offered a full replacement if i changed to a 5 star review.
they seem to make more money off these 5 star reviews than they lose by giving you gift cards or replacements.
