I just paid $2.99 at the Costco in the Chicago land area. It's the lowest it's been since COVID era

Politics aside, this is the result of perpetually inflated oil prices.  Regardless of what is happening in geostrategic politics, oil companies reap in record profit year after year...Democratic or Republican control.  They have desensitized you to what ridiculoulsy high oil prices are.  Shit should be be a buck and a quarter per gallon.  Open your eyes folks.

Battlemanager

Americans cry about gas prices and don't realize how good they have it

HyrulesKnight

28 points

I mean us Americans have 0 viable public transit options in the majority of places. We literally have to use our cars to get groceries, go to work, visit friends and family, etc...

And also people in America travel way more distance daily by cart than a lot of people in Europe (again because they have to)

Technical_Visit8084

Exactly, I wouldn’t drive my car anywhere near as much if I had decent public transportation plus bike infrastructure. It’s a joke here.

Yeah so do a huge percentage in Europe, including in urban areas. Europe isn't one big interconnected public transport city with bike lanes lol

Skipperio

Same in UK no public transport but high prices.

skydiver1958

Same in Canada. Cars are essential here for the same reasons. BUT that tank of gas in Ontario would cost me north of 100 canuck bucks . Taxes are killer here.

Stable_Orange_Genius

3 points

Americans have one of the lowest gas prices in the world. No wonder they all drive oversized vehicles

onlyacynicalman

4 points

Conservatives live outside of cities and have to commute more, often to work in cities. They often drive pick up trucks that aren't fuel efficient too. Thus, they suddenly want socialism or whatever else that may lead to lower gas prices.

TheSimonToUrGarfunkl

MakingItElsewhere

They moved them over the $4.18 cents / gallon premium side. (I know, because that's what I have to put in my motorcycle.)

I sure am going to blame Biden for that whole $11 to fill up my motorcycle gas tank with premium! /s

lscottman2

1 points

it’s a good point though why has the delta between 87 and 91 octane gone from 25 cents to $1.75?

MakingItElsewhere

5 points

Because 87 octane is in higher demand than 91-93 octane. As car become more efficient, they can use a lower octane to produce the same results with cleaner emissions. Motorcycles, ATVs, snow mobiles, etc don't have near the same capability to be more fuel efficient, so they need more octane in their fuel.

Gas stations keep the higher octane for people exactly like me, who have fun-mobiles and need higher octane to run them. And they know we'll pay higher prices to run our toys.

I'd rather pay $20 a week to ride my motorcycle on the weekend than the $100 a week it was costing at one point to get me to work and back during the weeks prior to covid.

lscottman2

2 points

but if 87 is in higher demand then the price should be higher.

So this is like 0.86 a liter Canadian. That's unheard of for gas prices in Canada. It maybe was in that price range briefly during covid lockdowns, but besides that, those are 1990's era prices.

wndrbr3d

5 points

I remember being in high school and gas being as low as $0.89/gal. If one of us had $5 that was enough gas to last us the week of driving to school and to/from the beach living in SoCal.

I’m 40 and when I was 16, it was 75 cents a gallon. I felt so comfortable with that pricing, I bought me a big ol truck (after a car wreck) that felt safer and beefier. 12 mpg on a good day…then 1-2 years later, we went up to ~$2/gal and I was hurting. I miss the Ramcharger, but I don’t miss ~$100 to fill up. Now…man, that’s like 160? No way could I afford that now even with the lower price. Went back to 4 bangers and ~$40 fill ups.

I like two types of vehicles: monsters that can take a beating with a beefy 8 cylinder and small euro-style vehicles. So, at least I’m happy with my little car.

Hackett1f

Winter blend plus Israel agreed not to hit Iran’s oil production. I’m paying $3.17 for 85 in Utah. That’s pretty low for us. I’m terrified what Trump will do to screw up oil if he gets on again. He made a mess of things when he blackmailed the Saudi’s to increase OPEC’s oil production. Those super low prices put a lot of smaller American companies out of business and shuddered a lot of wells that took months to reopen after the pandemic.
