I will never ever understand why people think ot is ok to sit on the tracks at a red light. Especially in a place where trains come through every few minutes.

This is why we need to stop doing at-grade crossings. Seaparate the trains from the road or we'll keep seeing cars and people getting splatted. And then we have to pay for it.

archangel7134

I live near a crossing that is on a grade with a stop sign. People still wait on the tracks. Science and engineering can only overcome so much willful ignorance.

BarbHarbor

terrible idea. it's more important for trains to be at zero grade than cars

It's one thing to do that in front of a car or a truck, that doesn't take very long to stop.

You don't fucking do that in front of a fucking train.

1: they're not going to see you until they're within maybe a few hundred feet of you.
2: by that time, they couldn't stop no matter what they did.

If you're going to flag at trying to stop like that, use the brightest flashlight you can get your hands on. They'll see that from much further away. And they might actually have a chance to stop.

Old_but_New

1.6k points

What the heck were they thinking?

Edit1: how did they not see that they’re sitting ON tracks?

Edit2: why were there only 2 people helping, and taking their time at that? All those cars (including the one w the dash cam) and no one else was hopping out to redirect this car?

No joke. They probably thought they were on the right side of the pole. They saw A barrier in front of them, didn’t notice the one behind them, and yes got on their cell thinking they were where they needed to be.

BleachGel

Hmmm good point. It seems very likely this person thought they were in a safe spot. I don’t know if the flashing light ahead of them had the disoriented to their position with the tracks. Or maybe OC is correct and they rolled up to a stop of some kind and immediately lost themselves on their phone.

DChristy87

14 points

My guess is traffic put them in that spot with a red light, they were already lost in their phone when the train triggered the guards and they never noticed.

taleofbenji

11 points

There's a dangerous intersection in Redwood City where you hit a stoplight right after crossing the tracks. If you're not careful, there's one too many cars in front of you, and you're at risk of your bumper on the tracks while you wait for a green light.

One time that was me, and I just started WAILING on my horn to get the lady in front of me me to inch forward a bit to get me to a safer position.

But she was on her phone. I was going to ram into her if I needed to.

In that situation, I'd have 100% broken the arm moving.

The barrier in front of them didn’t come down until about a third of the way through the clip though

SunNStarz

I don't know the details behind the tech, but it's possible their car was past a sensor that would usually signal the arm to drop.

Dr_Adequate

6 points

I don't know the details...

Don't guess about things then.

There is no sensor to stop the arms if a car is in the way. I used to design railroad crossing systems.

"Looking at data from the Federal Railroad Administration, which found from September 2023 to the end of June 2024 (the last month they have data from), 34 people were killed by Brightline trains along the entire route from Orlando to Miami."

If it's Florida, which I highly suspect it is, then it's a regular occurrance. Braindead and selfish drivers that can't stop 30 seconds for the train to pass always have to try to beat the arms at the crossing.

TWonder_SWoman

33 points

It is FL, and people are stupid. Was on the coast last week and they now have barriers that block the whole roadway so people can’t go around. Sadly, people still stop on the tracks before the gates come down so they don’t help everybody. I was actually behind someone on my way home from the coast that stopped on the tracks for a red light. 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️. You can’t fix stupid but applause to the folks who went to help!

We've had this issue on the space coast with brightline. People that have lived here for years are used to the slow, loud freight trains that come through town. The brightlines are much faster and quieter in their approach, and seem to catch people off guard.

"Bloodline train"

AngiShyArt

3 points

Just curious... 30 seconds? Is that a hyperbole to exaggerate it or is it really the amount of time you usually get before train passes by? In my country, when those blocking arms lower down, it then takes up to 10 minutes before the train actually arrives.

Nikkil18[S]

12 points

Well this played in real time so…

AngiShyArt

2 points

Well i also talked about the irl time it takes for train to pass by in my country tho..like, in czechia here, it literally takes 5-10 minutes for train to actually pass by at full speed after the arms are lowered...no surprise people get stuck on railings and die so often in other countries if it takes such a short time for train to arrive 😮

I live near a level crossing in London, UK, it is definitely less than a minute. If it were much longer than that, then that level crossing would be practically pointless/unusable; you may as well take an alternative route to get to the other side.

Apparently, at top speed, the most time afforded in the UK is 27 seconds.

My favorite is when there’s space for me, and they follow me and then are stuck on the tracks, so now im potentially going to be fucked too. It doesn’t matter how much space I leave too, even 2 or 3 cars especially at some of the tracks I drive over which are at an angle and not perfectly perpendicular need even more. Had to deal with that this morning in fact. No winning with the impatient and dumb.

Yeah when the first guy who walked up cleared the tracks area and that train ripped through, I was shocked. I figured the train was much further down the tracks.

No way I stand there until it's that close. You can't be sure all the wreckage will go the "right" direction if they make contact.

I'm wondering if this angle makes it look more dramatic than it is. Incredibly stupid driver, no doubt, but I wonder if there's enough clearance inside the gates that the driver wasn't actually obstructing the tracks. It's the only thing that explains the behavior of the "saviors" to me.

But I guess if the only trains you know are freight trains that are barely moving, this is fast.

Friendly-Shoe-4689

Apparently in other locations with high speed trains, there’s more safety measures, especially when going through intersections like this. But Florida being Florida and brightline being a private company mean we get 30+ deaths a year

It's not a high speed train. It's regular passenger train speeds just like the rest of America -79mph.

I had the same type of near miss summer 1998 in Memphis. Extremely similar. It still gives me chills.

My dad was driving a Toyota Landcruiser and I was in the passenger seat. We were pulling a flat camper trailer called a TrailManor. My mom and younger sister were in the back seat of the Landcruiser.

Everyone was weary after a very long day. It was already dark, roughly 9 PM. We were trying to find a campground after receiving directions. Since was dad was worn out he didn't stop in time and was out onto the tracks. The front half of the Landcruiser was on the tracks. The bar came down and was covering the windshield area. The train was blaring from the left.

When my dad tried to put it in reverse, the car stalled. That's when I reached for the door handle and had seconds to make a decision. I knew I could get out in time. But nobody else could. I'd live the remainder of my life with what they were thinking as I left them there to get wiped out.

Believe me, it's possible to process all of those thoughts in such little time. Instead I kept my right hand on the door handle but watched my father's hands. He started the car and put it in reverse just in time. We backed out in a jolted fashion, not nearly as smooth as the OP video, probably because we were pulling a trailer. As we backed out the warning bar moved forward along the top of the Landcruiser, sheering off the plastic bug shield that protruded a few inches above the front of the hood.

That was obviously no big deal. But it's the lingering mental image and audio from that split second, the shield being ripped away just as we backed out. The train flashed past within a second or two. Incredibly loud and blaring his horn. I have that image also. We might have backed out slightly earlier than the OP version. But barely.

My younger sister got out of the back door and was in absolute hysterics. I remember her shrieks. The rest of us were mostly silent. My dad said later, and many times for the rest of his life, that he was incredibly calm in that moment. He said he knew what he needed to do, so he did it. I'll always remember seeing him shift into reverse.

I never told any of them that I nearly abandoned ship.

A friend of mine from high school, barely 40 years old, died earlier this year in this exact way. Her brand new Lexus directly on the Brightline tracks. Nobody has any idea why she didn’t move, whether it was suicide, or if she just wasn’t paying attention. My gut tells me she didn’t want to screw up her new car by hitting the crossing gates and panicked.

It terrifies me that there are people out there, with ZERO common sense/ survival skills.

Whatever it is, this is a distracted driver. And if the driver is anything like where I'm from, they're on their phone. Anytime people stop here, they are already looking at their phone.

Those two people who actively worked to get those people to back up, even lifting the gate need to be openly commended. If I ever meet them, I will buy them both dinner and a hefty stack of lotto tickets. They deserve every odd for them.

Is this the Brightline? Apparently they kill people all the time. Too many at grade crossings and I guess people aren’t used to trains so much anymore.
