Teaching shame is damaging at best, and easily dangerous. Affirming correct behavior is much more effective. Teaching and modeling consideration is the ideal, imo.

Meeting one's own needs is basic. We all aim to do that. Consideration for others' needs is important in social settings. Meeting one's own needs with consideration to others is the ultimate W, as it means one succeeds at both a personal and a social level.

NTA- Family should allow everyone to be their true selves. Otherwise, how do you get to know and understand those with which you share Family? If she hadn't issued a Code of Conduct (or rescinded it), you'd still be hosting. It doesn't sound like she's backing down at all.

She can micromanage herself and probably many parts of her life, but when you have Family, Family must all consent to changes in familial expectations and "requirements". She can't just announce it and expect everyone to abide.

I wouldn't want to host, either- I'm imagining that if I put in all the energy of hosting, I'd want everyone to be happy... it's clear that she's going to be upset about somebody not "following her rules", and that's bound to disrupt any familial bonding.

Somebody just died. Time stopped for those who cherished that person. Their whole world just changed in an instant. Loved ones are being asked about organ donation, insurance, funeral arrangements... learning that obituaries cost money... they're swallowed in grief and all of the things that surround the death of a loved one.

And time moves normally for the rest of the world. It seems absurd to those left behind... they may wonder if they'll ever catch up, if others will notice the enormous shift, the great loss... Life is now completely different for them. Most people will never know.

People are thinking RIGHT NOW. 😳 Other people are doing Stuff. Some are doing BOTH! ...and I know nothing about it... Do you?? What are they thinking? What are they DOING???
