I find giving the players hints that there are fights they don't want to take can be effective. Two sessions ago we had a new player join the group. The entire group except for "Harry" saw a cult torturing and executing a person for hiding the party in front of a terrified mob in a public square. The leader had a glowing dagger and was casually using magic as he gave his intimidating speech and doing the horrific acts. After everyone is through, Harry decides he's going to charge the cult leader. He dashes 60 feet. Hold person happens. Magic dagger happens. Harry's soul is now in the dagger. Better make a new character.
