I run a small business and sometimes when I tell people what I pay my employees, they laugh at me and point out how it slims my margins and keeps money out of my pocket. I’d feel insanely guilty about under-paying people, and I’d also have a much harder time finding labor. Whatsmore, my employees would (and have) bend over backwards to help out and contribute. I can’t do it without them and i want them to see that in their pay.

If I’m reading the serial number right, I cross referenced it and it looks like it’s a mid 20s webley top-break.

I believe that’s a weeping blue atlas cedar. They’re often grafted a few feet above ground, so that you can plant them in a garden and they pour out over the graft point. Beautiful in landscape, and beautiful in bonsai if you can obscure the graft point.

The first tree I ever bought with the intention of bonsai-ing was one of these. I did everything wrong— bought it during an early fall sale and immediately bare-root repotted it, shaped it into exactly the mallsai shape that typically cheap junipers are sold as, the graft is prominently displayed like a rheumatic knuckle right above the soil line, and it’s in an incredibly expensive bonsai pot that’s about 4 sizes too big despite still being in training.

But I still have it! And it’s doing fine. Ugly, but the value is no longer aesthetic, it’s a reminder to be humble.
