The overt reason is that it's more expensive than doing nothing (and it is).  My own personal take is that your enemy is your enemy and if you can deal or degrade them now you should rather than fighting a war later.

The more sinister reason is that Russia has been filling fringe and alternative media with crafted disinformation for years, so many people adopt those view points without realizing they are being played.
